Task no. 3 – Stating research problems/questions

Part 1. Classify the following studies as most likely being quantitative or qualitative: (5 points)

1. Life of an Adolescent with HIV Infection

QUALITATIVE
2. High School Principals’ Perspectives on Student Expulsion
QUANTITATIVE
3. The Effect of Ability Grouping on Academic Outcomes for Gifted Students
QUANTITATIVE
4. Racial Stereotypes in Middle School Literature Textbooks
QUALITATIVE
5. Teaching in an Alternative High School

QUALITATIVE

Part 2. The following examples are inadequate statements of research problems. Restate each so that it becomes a
specific question suitable for research. (14 points)

1. A later morning start for the high school

-What are the impact of school later daily schedule on high school students’ classroom performance?
2. Parental involvement and elementary school achievement
-What are the effect of parental involvement in elementary students’ school achievement?
3. Self-concept of children with learning disabilities
-How does self-concept affect the overall academic performance of students with learning disabilities?
4. Home-schooled adolescents
-What are the level of learning motivation of Home-schooled adolescents in comparison with Mainstream
students?
5. Gender differences and logical thinking skills of talented preadolescents
-Is there a relationship between gender and logical thinking of talented preadolescents?
6. Teaching students with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
-What are the attitude and behavior of pre-service teacher towards teaching students with attention deficit
hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
7. Predicting achievement in a graduate education program

-What are the indicators in predicting graduate education learners’ achievement?

Part 3. Analyze how each of the four characters state a research question. Make a critique on each of these problem
statements, based on what you know on how research problems should be formulated or stated. (20 points)
Carlos:

The question of Carlos is somewhat vague. He stated the question with no specificity whether he is
referring to basic education or college curriculum, plus it can easily be answerable by yes or no, which
makes it non argumentative. It can be restated by questioning "What are the possible outcomes of
including environmental education in the basic education curriculum?"
Anita:

In Anitas' research question her topic is clear yet vague and common. It could be easily searched and
solved by simply executing different pedagogical styles. Also, it is not an interesting research topic
nowadays since basic knowledge of fractions is readily accessible on the internet. This research question
needs reconstruction to a more specific and relevant mathematical topic that will have a contribution to the
problems encountered by most of the students in the subject area.
Marie:

Marie's question is based on a proposition that is unattainable/unmeasurable by humanitarian means.

Even if it were to be pushed through, the amount of related resources might be of abstract or philosophical
in nature, which might be deemed unuseful by the general public.
David:

David’s question could be easily identified as a good problem. But looking at it closely, the problem
has no clear direction. It somewhat look like there is a missing variable to indicate what is the
relevance of this study on the elementary students. The question of David should be restated saying
"What is the relationship between verbal aptitude and reading scores among elementary learners?" is
it will create more arguments this way than the initial statement.
