Asignment-1
Module 1:
P1. Derive and show the mathematical expression E = 2G (1+μ). Where E, G and μ are
modulus of elasticity, modulus of rigidity and poison’s ratio respectively. (10Mark)

P2. A circular steel bar of various cross-section is subjected to pull of 800 kN as shown in the
Fig. 1. Determine the total elongation of the bar. E = 240 GPa. (10Mark)

Fig.1

P3. A steel bar of 25 mm diameter is acted upon by the forces as shown in the Fig. 2. What is
the total elongation of the bar. Assume Elastic moduli of steel is 190 GPa. (10Mark)

Fig.2
P4. A steel rod and two brass rods together support a load of 370 kN as shown in Fig.3. The
cross-sectional area of steel rod is 1500 mm2 and of each brass rod is 1000 mm2. Find the
stresses in the rods. Take E for steel = 2 ×105 N/mm2 and for brass = 1 × 105 N/mm2. (10Mark)

Fig.3
P5. A steel rod of 3 cm diameter and 5 m long is connected to two grips and the rod is
maintained at a temperature of 95°C. Determine the stress and pull exerted when the
temperature falls to 30°C, if
a) The ends do not yield, and
b) The ends yield by 0.12 cm.
Take E = 2 ×105 MN/m2 and α = 12 ×10-6/°C. (10Mark)

Module 2:
P6. A piece of material is subjected to two perpendicular tensile stresses of 100 MPa and 60
MPa. Determine the plane on which the resultant stress has maximum obliquity with the
normal. Also find the resultant stress on this plane. (10Mark)

P7. In the wall of a cylinder the state of stress is given by, σx of 85MPa (compressive), σy of
25MPa (tensile) and shear stress (τxy) of 60MPa. Calculate the resultant stresses and its direction
(Solve this problem using Mohr’s circle). (10Mark)
