2. ESSAYS:

Teaching is considered as a devoted career as the teachers sacrifice their life not only for
imparting academic knowledge but also for evaluating and assisting children in being
aware of many perspectives in their learning journey deeply. There is an undeniable fact
that teachers have to give constructive feedback all the time but they do not have enough
time for this task. Admittedly, giving feedback and grading students is not the only way
to assess students.

This essay is about the way that students perform a self -evaluation about their own
learning English progress through the self - assessment worksheet.

Self - assessment is considered vital in the learning process as this kind of evaluation
informs the teachers where their students stand, how effective their instruction is and
lets them know whether they are doing their jobs well or need to work on some areas of
their instruction. Assessment also helps students be conscious of areas they need to
enhance and helps them realize their strengths – they are important feedback.

The most efficient way to do regular formal assessment is to provide criteria for students
to do self-assessment at the end of each lesson. We desire our children to take
responsibility for what they say and do in each class. The most feasible way to check and
make sure children understand where they stand in their learning path and how much
knowledge they can achieve is to have them do self - assessment.

In this project, our group designed a self - assessment worksheet for students of grade 3,
focusing on unit 19 - They’re in the park, lesson 2, part 2 - Point and say. The objectives
are to help students to identify several new words about weather (sunny, rainy, cloudy,
windy, stormy, snowy) and ask and answer questions about weather: “What’s the
weather like? It’s sunny.” at the end of the lesson.
GROUP WORK – SELF-ASSESSMENT SHEET – GROUP 2

“Sun model” is suitable with students in grade 3 because of the condensed information,
visual symbols and creative design that allows students to assess themselves shortly and
efficiently along with developing their imagination.

This worksheet asks students to identify their academic progress in five areas: what skills
and new words they learnt, which classroom organization they worked and how they feel
after the class.

Children complete this tree after they have finished lesson 2 of unit 19. They had to
choose which pictures applied to the lesson and then tick or asterisk the pictures. The first
ray of the Sun shows the different skills they were practicing. The second ray shows
different types of classroom organization. The third and fourth rays are the knowledge
they achieve after the lesson. The last ray has three faces which show how they may feel
(happy, sad or neutral).

To help students understand the requirements thoughtfully, at the beginning, the teacher
gives students an overview of the sheet - the Sun model with five main rays. In the first
ray, students were asked to color the symbols of the skills they had learnt. In the second
ray, students choose the class organization that they are involved in by ticking to the
symbols of individual - work, pair - work, group - work and class - working. Students color
the topic they learnt in the unit - weather, toys or family and the vocabulary about
weather - sunny, windy, rainy, cloudy, stormy in the third and fourth rays. The last ray
shows the feelings of the students after the class; therefore, they need to choose the
appropriate face to express their emotion by coloring.

This form supports students to reflect on and evaluate their own progress with class work.
This is an excellent tool to encourage children to understand their own progress, and
includes specific questions dedicated to areas of improvement, asking for help, and
subject knowledge, feelings.

In conclusion, it is also a great tool for teachers to recognize when a student might have
a lower self-perception than they expect, what the students may lack, and how children
feel about their teaching methods. It promotes student understanding of their learning,
and provides opportunities for critical analysis of their own efforts encouraging them to
become more autonomous learners.

3. REPORT:

This report is intended to consider all our member’s contributions in the process of
creating an assessment sheet. This work consists of 4 parts including selecting the unit of
lesson, designing an assessment sheet, making a written essay as well as a report. More
importantly, it also includes 3 periods of time which is equivalent to 3 days. First of all, in
terms of our work division, three of us have had a discussion and divided the work for
each person. More specifically, we all together make a choice for the unit 19 lesson 2,
part 2 of 3rd-grade English. Do The Hoai Thuong and Phan Thi Huyen Thuong have taken
responsibility for designing and creating an assessment sheet. Nguyen Thi Thuy Trinh has
written an essay and a report belonging to Do The Hoai Thuong’s mission. Second,
regarding the process of doing the assignment, we spent a night on discussing and
dividing (day 1). This evening, we shared our ideas, views about how to make a creative
assessment sheet for kids (9 years old) and then we drew a conclusion. On the second
day, we started to do the task and finished the assessment sheet and the essay in the
morning as well as a report in the afternoon. On the third day, we submit our missions
together and give some adaptations and alterations for making this work more perfect.
