Seven (7) Major Elements of Communication

Sender. They encode and transform their thoughts and feelings into a message
through verbal and non-verbal behaviors and send to other person.
Receiver. They decode or process the received messages and behavior and react to
them by giving feedback like nods and facial expression.
Message This are meanings or ideas that are encoded and sent by means of verbal
symbols then received and decoded into one’s own ideas and feelings.
Feedback. This element of communication serves as a signal of the sender whether
his message is heard, seen and understood by the receiver.
Channel. It serve as a medium in transmitting information from one person to other
either through visual or auditory channell
Barriers/Noise. It refers to the distructions that may interfere with the accurate
transmition and reception of message.

Context. The environment or situation were communication took place. The following
are five types of context that could affect the content of the communication process: Physical

Process of Communication

Figure 2. Cycle of Communication

Source: https://www.coreldraw.com/en/pages/ppc/coreldraw

The Process of Communication refers to the transmission or passage of information

or message from the sender through a selected channel to the receiver overcoming barriers
that affect its pace.
It can be seen from the illustration above that the process of communication is a cyclic
one as it begins with the sender and ends with the sender in the form of feedback.
The process of communication as such must be a continuous and dynamic interaction, both
affecting and being affected by many variables.

Figure 3. Shows how communication took

place, from the source of information – the sender-
who decides what information to encode and
transmit it using appropriate channel as a means
to deliver the message to the receiver.

Upon receiving the message, the receiver

decodes the information meaning, he/she process
and analyze the message in order for him/her to
provide appropriate feedback to towards the
message received. The feedback sent by the
receiver to the sender will served as basis by the
latter if the message he/she sent is clearly
understood by the receiver.

B. Getting the Purpose.

Directions: Read the written speech provided below then answer the question given questions.

Are They Really Abnormal?

by Maki Onuma
Miyagi Gakuin Women's University, Japan

When I worked part-time, I saw a mother with a child. Suddenly, the boy began to shake his
waist, raise his hands, and make a strange sound. Immediately I understood what he was
doing; he imitated Hard Gay, the performer who acts like a gay character. At the sight of his
action his mother said to him, "Stop it, or you'll become a real homo!" The boy said, "Oh, I
don't want to. Because they are abnormal!" And then, they laughed together.
Today, I'd like to talk about how to get rid of discrimination against homosexuals. As you know,
in Japan, there are many heterosexuals who fall in love with the opposite sex. On the other
hand, there are also homosexuals who fall in love with the same sex. According to Asahi
newspaper, homosexuals are 3% to 10% of any population around the world. In the past,
homosexuality was treated as a mental illness. But, now, homosexuality is thought of not as
illness but as an identity. So the World Health Organization excluded homosexuals from being
targets of medical treatment in 1993 and Japan accepted it the next year.

-Tony Robbins
ECOreiroSY2022-2023
edisnoreiro439@gmail.com
09359634056
But, do you think discrimination against homosexuals has disappeared in twelve years? No!
Comedians on TV make us laugh when they make fun of homosexuals. Students and teachers
in school use discriminatory terms without thinking, for example "homo", "lez", and "okama."
People in town feel bad when they see a same sex couple.
It is very serious problem for gays that the discrimination still exists. According to the Mainichi
Newspaper, 15% of homosexuals attempt suicide. That is five times as much as
heterosexuals. Gays face serious problems. Could you ignore their problems? They feel "Am
I abnormal?" and "Why am I like this?" Then, if worst comes to worst, they kill themselves.
We can't ignore them!
Why do we discriminate against homosexuals? I suppose the cause is we don't learn about
them or learn wrong information at school, and we swallow this whole. We have an incorrect
image, for instance, gays acted like the opposite sex, they have sex with many people and so
on. The Mainichi newspaper shows 91% of people have never learned about gays or were
taught negative things about them. In my case, I used to discriminate against homosexuals
until I took an elective subject which included the topic of homosexuality at my university.
So I have one suggestion. It is that junior high school should have a class to teach correct
information about homosexuals. I think if schools do that, we can stop discrimination against
homosexuals. There are two reasons why we should learn about gays in junior high school.
First, we all have to go junior high school because of compulsory education, so everyone can
study it. Second, Yasuharu Hidaka, who is a lecturer at Kansai Gakuin University, says
homosexuals begin to realize they are gay at about thirteen to fifteen years of age. That's
when we are in junior high school. It's just in time. Thanks to this class, homosexual and
heterosexual students can get true information.
Actually, some junior high schools already started this class about homosexuals. For instance,
Heian Jogakuin junior high school in Kyoto has given lessons about homosexuals as part of
sex education in health and physical education since 1997. This class does a discussion, puts
themselves in a homosexual's position and listens to a gay person's lecture.
Every class has common features. It is that homosexual students feel it is easy for everyone
to know that they are not abnormal. Moreover, heterosexual students could understand deeply
and lose their discriminatory thinking against homosexuals.
Some people say it is not necessary to learn about homosexuals and that it has a bad influence
for children. But please imagine. Through study connected with homosexuals, it will be easy
to accept when our friends or family are gay. And if we became parents, we can point out in
case our children say discriminatory remarks to them. What's more, homosexuals can stop
worrying due to being taught before their eyes and their friends lose their discriminatory
thinking. To learn about homosexuals will have a great effect for everyone!
We have discriminated against homosexuals for ages. But are they really abnormal? No! We
should know there are many gays around us. We should remember they are not abnormal.
Please think about homosexuals who were worried by discrimination. I hope everyone knows
they are not abnormal.
They are people, the same as you and I.

LESSON D: LEVELS OF COMMUNICATION

Communication occurs in different level. In this part of your

lesson, you will learn the different levels of communication
process. Enjoy and have fun.

Communication connects people and the world they live in. It

is through communication that people can express their thoughts and
ideas or convey information and messages through word of mouth,
gestures and signals, signs, and others. People have always
communicated with one another in various forms and levels.
Levels of Communication
A. Intrapersonal Communication
It is the first level of communication that occurs within us. This refers to a type of
communication that is focused on one person, where the speaker acts both as the
sender and as the receiver of the message. The message is made up of thoughts
and feelings while the medium is the brain that processes what you think and feel.

Examples:
• There is a voice within you that tells you, “It’s okay, you can still do it! You can
make it!” when you are losing your drive to finish the task that you are doing.
• When you told yourself not to talk to your friends when you have read in a
Facebook post that they were in a party and you were not invited.
B. Interpersonal Communication
This level of communication occurs only when we communicate on a one-on-one
basis. This refers to the type of communication that takes place between and
among people and creates a personal relationship between and among them.
Normally, it includes two individuals, and it can vary from casual and very personal
to formal and impersonal.
Types of Interpersonal Communication
Dyad Communication – communication that happens between two people.
Examples:
• You consoled your brother who was feeling down.
• A conversation between your father and mother about the latest announcement
of your Barangay Chairman.
Small Group– This applies to interactions involving at least three but not more
than twelve people engaged in face-to-face interactions to achieve the desired
goal. In this type of conversation, all participants can freely express their ideas
throughout the discussion.
Examples:
• You are having a discussion with your two brothers about the surprise
party you are planning for your Mom’s birthday.
• Kathlyn who came back from the United States called her three
brothers and four sisters and announced that she is getting married.

C. Public Communication
It refers to the kind of communication where one person delivers his remarks to the
remaining members called the audience. This type refers to a communication that
enables you to send or deliver a message before a crowd. The message can be
transmitted for informative or persuasive purposes. "In public communication, unlike
interpersonal and small groups, the channels are more exaggerated. The voice is
louder and the gestures are more expansive because the audience is larger”.
Examples:
• Delivering a graduation speech to your fellow graduates.
• You were elected as the new SSG president of your school and were given a chance
to deliver a message of gratitude to your fellow students.

D. Mass Communication
This refers to communication through television, radio, newspapers, magazines,
books, billboards, the internet, and other types of media.
Examples:
• You are watching a televised briefing of IATF on COVID-19.
• You have recorded a commentary for your school’s Online Discussion of the
pandemic and uploaded it in your social media account.

misunderstanding?. In this part of your lesson, you will
learn the different Models of Communication process.
Enjoy and have fun.

Communication plays a crucial role in human life. It facilitates the sending and
receiving of knowledge and information. It allows people to develop various kinds of
social relationships. It provides an avenue for people to express their ideas, thoughts,
feelings, and insights. Without it, societies will be restrained from developing and
progressing. With all the advancements in technology, communication nowadays has
changed dramatically, adapting to the 21st century way of life. Beginning from the
ancient times when messages were written on tablets, clays and barks of trees or
conveyed by the heralds or emissaries for proclamations to an entire territory,
communication has drastically evolved to fastest means of sending messages through
electronic gadgets and computers. Video calling or conferences is another high
technological innovation where distance is not quite a problem anymore to foster
mutual understanding.

Models of Communication Process

A.Linear Communication
Have you talked to somebody but did not get any reaction from him/her at all?
Have you experienced sending a message without receiving any feedback? This is
linear communication.
Linear communication is one-way, focusing on the transmission of a message
to a receiver who never responds or has no way of responding to the information
conveyed. For instance, a competition organizer is presenting the contest mechanics.
The message is final and cannot be contended at all. It could be the president giving
his State of the Nation Address on the national television or a student who reads a
poem or tells a story in front of an audience in a school program. Other examples
include sending a notification or automated message that does not require a reply,
reading a blog, or even the traditional way of sending a message such as a telegram.

Shannon-Weaver Model
An example of linear type of communication is the Shannon-Weaver model
(1949). It is also considered as the mother of all communication models. It has a one-
way process starting from a source (producer of message); passing through a channel
(signals adapted for transmission) which may at times be interrupted by noise (barrier)
to a receiver (decoder of message from the signal). The process stops after the
message has arrived at its destination.

B. Interactive
When was the last time someone surprised you? How did you react? Who was
the last person whom you praised for a job well-done? What response did you get?
What is the significance of getting a response or reaction from the person to whom
you addressed your statement?
Interactive approach is a two-way communication process where a response is
given after a message is sent. The recipient of the action intentionally or unintentionally
gives a feedback associated with the information received.

Aling Terie’s response to Criselda’s statement proves that she decodes the intended
meaning of the idea passed on to her. That is what we call feedback. See, feedback makes a
difference.
If the mother did not respond to the statement of her daughter, the latter would not
know whether her mother understands what she said. The exchange of ideas or information
verifies that both parties understand the message. Take a look at the next model.

Schramm (1954) visualized the process of communication as an exchange of

thoughts and ideas. Feedback was added to the Shannon-Weaver Model. The
recipient of the message decodes it and creates a feedback based on his
understanding of the information sent and vice versa.
The figure identifies the six elements of communication which are the sender,
the message sent, the receiver and the feedback provided by the receiver and sent
back as a response to the sender and the processes of encoding and decoding.

Oral Communication in Context

Remember, information may become useless if it is not conveyed properly to
others. Thus, the processes of encoding and decoding are the key components of this
model, including feedback.
Encoding is when an idea or information is translated into words and
expressed to others. Decoding is when this idea or information is understood and
interpreted by the receiver.
Hence, the receiver must be able to send feedback to the sender in order to
complete the process. Otherwise, the communication transaction fails. Schramm’s
model, which is a two-way communication model, revolves around these principles.
The process goes on starting from the sender (source) who encodes the
message transmitted to the receiver which he interprets; decodes a message
(feedback) to be sent back to the source who in turn, decodes and interprets the
information sent.

C.Transactional Model
Communication is dynamic. It has a complex nature. It takes place among
individuals at any given time with any given subject. However, there are tendencies
that barriers would interfere which may create a sudden impact and change in the
processing of information.
In a classroom setting, for example, you are being grouped into five or six
members for an activity. Your task is to give an opinion or reaction to the closure of
the biggest television network in the Philippines. Each of you expresses your thoughts
regarding the matter. While having that activity, you also heard the JHS graders having
their dance practice for the upcoming event. That noise did not interrupt your
discussion as you give your own views. This situation is an example of a transactional
approach.
The communicator (source) encodes the message and transmits it through
a channel. The message transmitted may be affected by the noise (barrier). The
receiver (recipient of the message) decodes, processes, and filters the message for
understanding and is now ready to give his own feedback to the sender.

Oral Communication in Context

“To effectively communicate, we must realize that we are all different

in the way we perceive the world and use this understanding as a guide to our communication with others.”
-Tony Robbins
ECOreiroSY2022-2023
edisnoreiro439@gmail.com
09359634056
The transactional model shows a circular process of interaction between the
persons involved in the communication, with each one actively participating and
sharing ideas with one another. They are the communicators actively exchanging
information and reaction.
Feedback is given freely and deliberately to one another or to all members
participating in the communication transaction. The sender and the receiver may
simultaneously exchange roles as communicators. Since communication is deemed
dynamic and progressive, the topic may also change from time to time.
In this concept, the noise or barrier to communication is also taken into
consideration for it may directly or indirectly affect the smooth flow of communication.
In the event that the message was not clearly conveyed due to the barrier, the
communication continues in order to clarify the intended meaning of the sender. When
the transmission is cut along the way due to the barrier, the communicators work
collaboratively to understand each other. Now, the sender becomes a receiver of
feedback (the response from the receiver) and the receiver also acts as sender
providing information in response to the message conveyed to him. In this way, the
communication is made more effective and complete.

Activity 9: Identify the Reason

Communication is a process of exchanging thoughts, ideas, and

opinions in order to connect with other people. It’s goal is to
achieve a clear and effective understanding resulting to good
relationships in the community. However, there are times when
this goal is not reached due to certain factors. When this
happens, there is communication breakdown.

Directions: Identify the reasons for the communication breakdown in each picture.
Write your answer in a separate sheet of paper similar to the box below.

LESSON G: AVOIDING COMMUNICATION BREAKDOWN

Communication breakdown may at times be inevitable but

as a sensible speaker or sender of the message, we could
avoid this. Understanding the concept of communication
breakdown and its causes, will help us realize that failure
in communication may be avoided through certain
strategies that we could adapt.

Here is an article entitled 5 Ways to Avoid Communication Breakdown by

Ronnie Peterson.

A smooth and successful communication transaction may result if we follow the
strategies to avoid communication breakdown. Communication becomes successful if
and only if our communication goal is achieved, that is, an understanding is reached
and a relationship is built or maintained.
Here are some strategies to avoid communication breakdown (Quipper n.d.).

Tips on How to Avoid Communication Breakdown Broom, Cutlip and Center

(2012) listed the 7Cs of Effective Communication in their book Effective Public
Relations. These are Completeness, Conciseness, Consideration, Concreteness,
Courtesy, Clearness, and Correctness.
