Intarsia Tutorial
This tutorial and sample crochet project (Page 3) will guide you through the basic steps and techniques
on how to do Intarsia Crochet. There are many ways of doing Intarsia Crochet, this is just one. If you
find ways to complete your project that work better for you, feel free to use them. Hopefully this will
give you the foundation to get started. Happy Crocheting!
Intarsia Crochet:
A crochet technique which creates a double sided fabric that is stitched neatly on both sides (even
though one side will be the reversed image). You will use bobbins of yarn (separate smaller balls of CC
(contrast color) yarn) for each “block” of CC. This is done so you do not carry pieces of CC yarn
across the back of your work (sometimes known as “floats”).
To become familiar with the Intarsia technique, use the graph on the previous page (with any two colors
of same weight yarn and a hook that works with your yarn) and follow the steps. You will then be able
to apply this technique when crocheting this pillow. Keep in mind this pillow uses multiple colors of yarn
at once, so it is imperative that you are comfortable using multiple bobbins before you begin this project.

Step 1: Look at the graph for color changes in the CC to get a rough estimate of how many bobbins
you will need to start. You can always add more if you feel you need to. For small distances (one or two
stitches), the CC can be carried through, but as a general rule, a new bobbin should be used for each
“block” of color. Here is how I determined where I should use bobbins (stitches circled), and I’ve
highlighted the “blocks” of color where I will be using each one:

Step 2: According to my assessment of the graph, I am going to need three (3) total bobbins of
CC. I will use two (2) for the bottom two objects. Then, I will cut them to finish off when I’m completed
with Row 11. I will then take those same two bobbins and add in a third for the top two objects.
Remembering that I need to take into consideration which way I’m reading my graph (R to L or L to R), I
notice that from the end of the CC in Row 14 to the beginning of the CC in Row 15 is too much of a
stretch. That is why I am beginning a new bobbin for that first CC stitch in Row 15. The same
situation arises when going from Row 15 to Row 16, which is where I introduce my third bobbin.
Bobbins can be made up very simply by just balling up small amounts of yarn, or winding yarn around a
small strip of cardboard. You can also purchase plastic bobbins at a craft store. You can start new
bobbins as needed throughout the project.

Step 3: Begin the project.
When it is time to join in the CC [Row 3, Stitch #7], complete the last MC stitch (Stitch #6) until you
have two loops on the hook (1). YARN UNDER with the CC, and pull a loop through, keeping the tail on
the WS of your work (2).

7
[Row 3, Stitch #7] is a single CC stitch. Therefore, you will complete Stitch #7 until there are two
loops on your hook. You will bring the CC forward, YARN UNDER (3) , and pull a loop through with the
MC. (4)
3 4
Since you are working a RS row, you will then bring the CC back over to the WS and continue stitching
with the MC.
Add in the second bobbin as indicated on the graph (at Stitch #14), complete that single stitch just as
you did in Stitch #7, bring the CC back over to the WS, and continue stitching with the MC.
At the end of Row 3, your piece should look like this (5). May feel a little awkward at this point, but as
you get the hang of it, it will run smoothly.

Step 4: You are now going to turn your work and continue working Row 4. When turning your
work at the end of the row, you will have to untangle your bobbins so they are back in the correct
working order (6, 7). I recommend doing this each time you turn your work, otherwise you will have a
big tangly mess.

Step 5: Now you will begin working Row 4. You will crochet with only the MC until you get to
Stitch #15 (Remember, you are reading this row on the graph from L to R). Complete Stitch #14 until
there are two loops on your hook. Bring the MC forward, YARN UNDER with the CC, and pull up a
loop with the CC.
Complete Stitch #15, #14, and #13 in CC, while carrying the MC through. Remember to only complete
Stitch #13 until there are two loops on your hook. Bring the CC forward, YARN UNDER with the MC,
and pull up a loop with the MC.
Since you are working a WS row, you will drop the CC yarn
bobbin on that side and continue stitching Row 4 with the 9
MC. (9) When you get to Stitch #9, you will pick up your
other bobbin to complete Stitch #8, #7, and #6 in the same
manner as you did #15, #14, and #13.

10
Step 6: After completing Row 11, you will cut the two bobbins off (10), leaving longer(ish) tails for
weaving in later (11).
10 11
Continue stitching Rows 12 and 13 in MC only. When you get to [Row 14, Stitch #16], you will
introduce a new bobbin. Continue with the design introducing bobbins as indicated in Step 1. When you
are finished with Row 20, FO and weave in all yarn tails on the WS carefully, so they are hidden
behind same color yarn. Your design should be a double sided fabric that is stitched neatly on both
sides.
Your finished piece will look like this. Not too much difference between the front and back, right?

Pattern ~
Back Panel:
Foundation Chain: CH 47
Row 1 ~ SC in the 2nd Chain from the hook. SC in each CH across. CH 1, turn. (46)
At this point, your panel should be approximately 12” long. If it is longer, you will need to start again
with fewer beginning chains…
If it is shorter, you may need to start again with a few more beginning chains. Adjust as necessary to
achieve the proper sizing…
Repeat Row 2 until your back panel measures 12” (approximately 50-55 rows).

Front Panel:
Row 1 ~ SC in the 2nd Chain from the hook. SC in each CH across. CH 1, turn. (46)
Begin to follow the graph using the Intarsia Crochet technique, adding bobbins of color as necessary.
Continue in this manner until you finish Row 48 on the Graph.

Assembling the Pillow Cover ~
Lay the two panels one on top of the other, RS’s facing together.
(at this point it may be helpful to use stitch markers to temporarily “pin” the sides together so they don't
shift while stitching them together)
SL ST three of the sides together (Left, Top, and Right sides), leaving the Bottom open. FO, weave in
all ends to the WS.
Turn the pillow cover right side out and insert the pillow form.
Using your yarn needle and a long piece of MC yarn, whip stitch the bottom of the pillow cover
together. Weave in all ends to the inside of the pillow.
