2. How many children are the ideal number in a family?
3. How important is the gender, boy or girl?

2. READ THE TEXT QUICKLY AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS IN EXERCISE 1.

01 02 03 04 05 06

A survey conducted in different countries asked this question. Here are the results:

How many children is the ideal?

In most countries in Europe and North America, the answer to this question is two or three children. In other
countries some adult people show more preference for three or more children, but in general people prefer
small families. The United States is more traditional in the response to this question than other developed
countries. 50% of Americans are in favor of small families and 41% are against. By comparison, 77% of people in
Germany are in favor of small families, 67% in England and 61% in Canada. The French opinions on family size
are similar to the Americans’.

Boy or girl?

Regarding this question, the survey results show a moderate preference for boys around the world. Some
people say that gender –boy or girl- does not really matter but if they can choose, they prefer boys over girls.
This preference for a boy is particularly common in Thailand and India. 82% of people in those countries prefer
boys and only 7% prefer girls. The rest say that gender is not important. In the U.S. 42% of people participating
in the survey have no preference, but among those who do, boys are preferred by 35% versus 23% who prefer
a girl.

How important are children in a family?

About nine out of ten adults in Hungary, India and Taiwan state that it is necessary for a family to have children.
Six out of ten people in Europe, Mexico and Canada have the same feeling while only four out of ten people in
Germany and the United States feel that having children is necessary for their personal fulfillment.

2. What is the percentage of French people regarding the ideal number of children?

a) People don’t really have a preference for boys or girls.
b) The population in Thailand and India is 82% boys and 7% girls.
c) Not many people in Thailand and India prefer having girls.

4. The percentage of people that prefer boys or girls in the U.S.:

b) 42%
c) The information is not in the text.

1. DISCUSS THESE QUESTIONS IN SMALL TEAMS.

• What type of government does England have?

• Who is the current Queen of England?

2. READ THE TEXT ABOUT QUEEN ELIZABETH I AND COMPLETE THE CHART BELOW.

father mother brothers/sisters King Henry’s wives

Queen Elizabeth I
Elizabeth I was probably the greatest England’s monarchs.
She defeated the Spanish Armada and saved England from
invasion. Under her ruling, England turned into a strong and
independent nation.
Princess Elizabeth was born on September 7, 1533. Her father
was Henry VIII, the King of England and her mother was Anne
Boleyn, Henry’s second wife. Her father did not want a
daughter, he wanted a son so bad that he divorced his first
wife, Catherine of Aragon because she did not have a son.
When Elizabeth was two years old, King Henry accused her
mother, Anne Boleyn of treason and killed her, but in reality
this happened because she did not have a son either.
When the king remarried for the third time, Elizabeth was no longer a princess but she still
lived like the daughter of a king. She was very bright and learned to read and write in many
different languages. She also learned how to sew and play a musical instrument similar to
a piano called the virginal.
Elizabeth's father, King Henry VIII continued to marry different wives. He married six times.
His last wife, Katherine Parr, was kind to Elizabeth and allowed her to be educated in the
Protestant faith. Elizabeth was not catholic.
When Elizabeth was thirteen years old her father, King Henry, died. Her father passed the
throne to his son Edward, Elizabeth’s half-brother. While Edward was king she enjoyed
living the life of a wealthy lady because Edward allowed her a substantial income to live.
King Edward died at the age of fifteen. Elizabeth's half-sister Mary was now Queen. Mary
was a Catholic and wanted all people in England to be Catholic. Mary also married a
Spanish prince whose name was Philip. The people of England didn't like Queen Mary. She
put Elizabeth in prison just because she was a Protestant. Elizabeth was two months in a jail
cell at the Tower of London. While Elizabeth was arrested, Queen Mary died. In a moment,
she turned from prisoner to Queen of England at the age of twenty-five.

• Is English the same since its origin?

2. READ THE TEXT QUICKLY AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS IN EXERCISE 1.

A short History of English

English started when three Germanic tribes invaded and settled Britain more or less in the
5th century. These tribes, known as the Angles, the Saxons and the Jutes left what today is
Denmark and the north of Germany and went through the North Sea into the South of Britain.
(1) ____________. With the invasion, these people went away to the west and to the north, and
settled in what now is Wales, Scotland and Ireland, where people still speak their ancient
Celtic languages. The Angles, Saxons and Jutes named their new territory Englaland and
they called their language Englisc.

Old English (450-1100)

The Angles, Saxons and Jutes spoke similar languages that mixed in Britain and developed in Old English. Old English
was different to English of these days. (2) ____________. Be, strong and water are examples of words that came from Old
English.

Middle English (1100-1500)

In 1066, invaders from the north of France, called the Normands, conquered England. They brought their French
language to England so French became the official language but the lower classes still spoke English. (3) ____________.
However, it adopted many French words and modified its structure. Spelling and sounds changed during this period.

Modern English (1500-the present)

A sudden change in pronunciation known as the Great Vowel Shift marked the end of Middle
English and the beginning of Modern English. Shakespeare, an English writer created many
words that the people adopted and remained in the language. (4) ____________. With this, more
people learned to read. The printing also standardized the language and made it difficult to
continue changing. (5) ____________. Now, English is still incorporating vocabulary but the
structure of the language is very unlikely to change.
