Apayao Houses (Isneg Houses)

- Background:
o Inhabiting the wide mountains of Apayao at the northern tip of the Cordillera
ranges, the Isneg build their houses in close proximity to one another, forming a
hamlet or clusters of hamlet mainly for protection; Hamlet - consists of four to
eight houses, granaries, and an enclosing bamboo fence where residents cultivate
coconut, betel nut, and other crops in a grove or orchard covered with weeds and
bushes
o Homes of the Isneg boatpeople pyramidal or hipped roof annex on one or both
ends removable sidings for special occasions
o No fixed window openings – wall construction system allow occupants to remove
few wailboards in case air is needed for the interior
o One-room abode with a large concave-shaped roof made up of heavy layers of
bamboo formed to resemble an inverted boat
- Plan:
o Stands 4.6 m x 7.9 m rectangular form several post systems with a prominent
gothic-like roof that assumes the silhouette of an upturned boat
o Elevation: approximately 1.50 meters above the ground
o Single-room rectangular structure designed with three levels
o Levels ~ Lowest: datag or xassaran – located at the center of the room;
Immediate: ramuyon – occupy three sides of the floor proper (lowest level);
Highest: tarakip – located on the remaining side of the house is an extension
o 15 posts of heavy hardwoods – supports (Sinit posts – 6 posts supports the datag
and 2 to support the tarakip; Adixi posts – 6 posts to support the roof; Atobrobo –
single post to support the ridgepole)
