Elephant

Toothpaste
Sebastián Linares and Luca Vizcarra
RESEARCH SITUATION

- Research Question: What happens if I put more yeast in one trial than another?
- Objective: Learn about chemical reaction and what happens when you alter the amount of material in an
Elephant toothpaste.
- Hypothesis:If we out more yeast then it will be more elephant toothpaste.
- Variables:
- Independent:The amount of yeast.
- Dependent:The amount of elephant toothpaste produced.
- Controlled:Amount of the different ingredients that are not the yeast.

Results In the first trial , we can see that is the highest

point of all the bars, we can see that is 1500 ml
and that we use 10 grams of yeast; although we
had to improvise since we did not have hydrogen
peroxide and instead of using it we used a cream
that was similar to hydrogen peroxide, however
everything went well since the reaction was as
expected.

In this trial the foam was more green than the

other attempts because the soap was around the
funnel and this occasisionated that colour when
blowing up.

In the third trial, we can see that the foam went

up to 1100 ml, also we can see that we use 5
grams of dry yeast in this attempt.

Brief DESCRIPTION of the results

In the first trial , we can see that is the highest point of all the bars, we can see that is 1500 ml and that we use 10
grams of yeast; although we had to improvise since we did not have hydrogen peroxide and instead of using it we used
a cream that was similar to hydrogen peroxide, however everything went well since the reaction was as expected.

In this trial the foam was more green than the other attempts because the soap was around the funnel and this
occasisionated that colour when blowing up.

In the third trial, we can see that the foam went up to 1100 ml, also we can see that we use 5 grams of dry yeast in this
attempt.

CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, my hypothesis was correct because when we add more

yeast it came out more foam, so now that we know the results we achieved the objective
that was Learn about what happens when you alter the amount from material in an
elephant toothpaste.
OBJECTIVE
1) Determine that the peruvian mussels (Perumytilus purpuratus) biofiltrate
polluting elements as coliforms and heavy metals (Cd and Pb) in marine water
samples from the beaches of Lima
2) Evaluate the levels of dissolved oxygen, pH and conductivity in marine water
samples, non-treated and treated.
3) Demonstrate the important ecological role of the peruvian mussels (Perumytilus
purpuratus) on the in the marine ecosystems.

HYPOTHESIS
The presence of peruvian mussels (Perumytilus purpuratus) will reduce
the levels of polluting elements (like coliforms and heavy metals), being
an adequate mean to help cleaning the pollution in the marine water
samples from the monitoring zones: Ventanilla, La Punta and Pulpos. Photo by: {{Vyshal Delahaut / Photo by: Hernán Tolosa Miembro

RESEARCH VARIABLES
o Independent: Presence of mussels
o Dependent: coliforms levels (total and faecal), heavy metals levels (cadmium and lead), dissolved oxygen level,
pH level, conductivity level.
o Controlled: Amount of water (fishbowls and buckets), amount of mussels per fishbowl, environmental
temperature, data collecting system.

CONCLUSIONS
1) With the results we can say that the hypothesis was correct: mussels (Perumytilus purpuratus) are
biofiltrating the polluting elements (coliforms and heavy metals), reducing its levels on the marine
water samples from the monitoring zones: Ventanilla, La Punta and Pulpos.
2) The mussels normal metabolism is also evidenced by the physicochemical variables variations from
the pre-test to the post-test (Dissolved oxygen, pH level, conductivity).
3) This shows that the mussels are natural biofilters in the marine ecosystems, with an important role
to maintain our beaches health.
