"WHY THE FUTURE
DOES NOT NEED US”
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
❑ Critique of Bill Joy “Why the Future Does Not Need Us”
❑ GENETIC ENGINEERING
The study of Heredity and variation of inherited characteristic.
❑ NANOTECHNOLOGY
A part of science and technology about the control of matter on the atomic
and molecular scale.
❑ ROBOTICS
Deals with the design construction, operation and use of Robots, as well as
computer system for their control, sensory feedback and information rocessing.
GENETIC ENGINEERING
ROBOTICS
❑ Robotics is the intersection of science, engineering and
technology that produces machines, called robots, that
replicate or substitute for human actions.
❖ For Example SOPHIA
➢ Developed by Hongkong Based Company HANSON
ROBOTICS using artificial intelligence technologies
developed by David Hanson.
➢ She is Capable of making “ realistic” human facial
expressions. And learning the relevant and familiar human
emotions behind those gestures.
➢ Sophia was granted citizenship of Saudi Arabia
➢ AUDRY HEPBURN
ROBOTICS:
❑ Another Example is SHIBURA MIRAI
❑ Shibuya Mirai does not exist physically but he can have text conversations with
humans on the widely used LINE messaging app.
Bill Joy stated that the future does not need us because of the advancement of
robotics, engineering and nanotechnology.
Experts say the rise of artificial intelligence will make most people better
off over the next decade. But what will happen if ……………
Computer Scientist succeeded in developing intelligent machines that can
do all things better than human being can?
➢ New issues will surface not only in a social sense but also in AI itself as the AI
being trained and learned how to operate the given task can eventually take off to
the stage that human has no control, thus creating un-anticipated problems and
consequences. It refers to AI's capacity after being loaded with all needed
algorithm may automatically function on its own course ignoring the command
given by the human controller.
If MACHINES do all of society’s work, as they inevitably
will then two-cases might occur:
Or
If we choose “a”.
It is not that we would give them control or that they
would take control, rather, we might become so
dependent on them that we would have to accept
their commands.
b.) Maintain human CONTROL Over the machines
If we choose “b”.
Then control would be in the hands of an elite, and the
masses would be unnecessary
b.) Maintain human CONTROL Over the machines
The elite:
1) Would exterminate the masses;
2) Reduce their birthrate so they slowly became extinct; or
3) Become benevolent shepherds to the masses
❑ The main point of Bill Joy on his Article:
❑ In the first part of Joy’s article, he introduces the fears he and others
have for the potential danger of the new twenty-first century
technologies known as GNR – Genetics, Nanotechnology, and
Robotics.
confront these issues. He says, “Each of us has our precious things, and
because of our great capacity for caring that I remain optimistic we will
