First Quarter/ Week 3/ Day 1-4

ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONICS COMPONENTS AND SYMBOLS

OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

1. Differentiate active from passive electronic components.
2. Discuss the different functions of electronic components used in
electronic circuit and
3. Discuss the proper way of testing electronic components.

DID YOU KNOW?

When building electronic circuits, you will work with several basic electronic
components. One key factor that differentiates types of electronic components from each
other is whether they are active or passive.

1. The ACTIVE components:

Active components require a source of energy, typically in the form of a direct
current, to perform their specific function. They can manipulate the flow of electricity in
some way. Most active components consist of semiconductor devices, such as diodes,
transistors, and integrated circuits.

2. The PASSIVE components:

Passive components can influence the flow of electricity running through them. For
example, they can resist its flow, store energy for later use, or produce inductance.
However, they cannot control or amplify electricity themselves. The most common passive
components are resistors, capacitors, inductors, and transducers.

Comparison Chart:

We are surrounded by these tiny electronic elements in everyday life. They are
hidden inside lights, sound systems, computers, phones, cars and many more. For us to
be able to fully understand the importance of each components in the world of electronics
circuitry, let us familiarize ourselves with it by performing and completing task number 1.

1. Using any high school or college Physics books at home, make a skeleton note of
the following electronic and electrical components, its symbols and functions and
complete the table below
1. Resistor
2. Battery Cell
3. Capacitors
4. Connecting wires or clips/Jumper wires
5. IC’s
6. Breadboard
7. multimeters
8. voltmeter, ohmmeter, and ammeter
9. switches
10. LED’s
11. and more basic components.

Repairing an electronic device begins with testing electronic components through a

multimeter. Multimeters can measure resistance and voltage. They can test devices
powered by either AC or DC voltages and work in or out of circuit. A handheld multimeter
is low cost, easy to use and gives accurate readings. Using one to test your electronic
components lets you determine if they need to be repaired or replaced.

ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE

Using the this link: electricalknowledge.com/electricians-tools/multimeter-how-to-

use/, perform task number 2. To verify whether our common household dry cell is of good
condition, you will be needing the following materials:

1. analog or digital multimeter

2. A load resistor
3. AA, AAA, D and 9V batteries
4. Connecting clips
5. plier

TASK 2: Testing Dry Cell Batteries

DIRECTIONS: Perform the following procedures below and supply the observed
multimeter readings on the table that follows. Answer also the given questions following
the table.
PROCEDURES:

1. Strip both ends of each length of wire and install an alligator clip on each end.
Crimp the clips onto the wire with pliers.
2. Clip one of the wires onto the black probe of a multimeter and the other wire onto
the red probe. Clip the other ends of the wire onto the wires extending out from the
resistor.
3. Set the meter to measure volts, in a range from 2 to 20 volts. Some digital meters
set the range automatically.
4. Touch the red probe to the positive terminal of the battery and the black probe to
the negative terminal and check the reading. Record this as trial 1. Ask two adult
assistants from your family members and let them perform the procedures and
record their readings as trial 1 and 2.
Dry cell Type T1, volt T2, volt T3, volt Average Reading in volt
AA, 1.5 volts
AAA, 1.5 volts
D cell, 1.5 volts
9-volt cell

QUESTIONS TO PONDER:

1. Compare and contrast the listed battery voltage with that of your average reading.
Is there a difference? Explain.

2. What can you infer when an average voltage reading is less than about half the
listed voltage of the battery?

3. Why is it that a load resistor is important to get the accurate condition of the
battery?

4. What is meant by a zero-test reading of a battery?

A reading equal to the listed battery voltage does not necessarily mean the
battery is good. The battery can be too weak to power your device but still have
enough charge to register its listed voltage on the meter.

EXTENSION TASK: PERSONALIZED TOOLBOX

Since we are familiarized already with the basic electrical and electronic
components - its symbols and functions, we are now ready to make our DIY personalized
electronics toolbox. Each one of you will do this task for you to buy in advance the
electronics materials that we will be needing for this quarter course and have everything
arranged and intact in your toolbox. The following are the list of components that must be
in your personalized toolbox.
1. Color resistors of different ohmic values
470W, 1.0kW, 1.5kW, 1.0MW
2. Red and black connecting wires like alligator clips and jumper wires
3. Battery and bulb holder, D cells and 9-volt battery and connectors
4. Breadboard
5. Multimeter (analog or digital)
6. LED’s and flashlight bulbs
