In his efforts to make the capital city of Manila vibrant and clean again, Mayor Francisco “Isko

Moreno” Domagoso pledged to clean the city that will not only help the residents to have a

more liveable environment but also encourage tourists to visit and explore the city. Department

of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat said that they fully support Mayor

Isko’s initiative as she described Manila as “the crucible of Philippine history and culture and

the primary gateway to the country’s 7,641 island destinations.”

Secretary Romulo-Puyat already directed several attached agencies of DOT to work closely

with Manila City Hall for this project. They aim to link the following sites with other heritage

districts in Manila:

 Intramuros – known as the walled city which was the seat of power in the

colonial Philippines during the Spanish regime

 Rizal Park – a park named in honor of the Philippine National Hero Dr. Jose

P. Rizal that houses a monument of the hero erected in the very area where he was

executed

 National Museum – a national institution trusted by the Philippine

government that collects, preserves, and exhibits documents, arts, and artifacts

representing Philippine history and culture

 Binondo – a neighborhood in Manila with the oldest Chinatown in the world

that was established during the turn of the 16th century and became a hotbed of

Filipino-Chinese culture.

The secretary also lauded Mayor Moreno for his efforts to provide foreign visitors a great first

impression of the Philippines as soon as they step foot in Manila. Together, they aim to

preserve and protect both natural and cultural attractions that Manila and the Philippines have to

offer.

It was also reported that international tourist arrivals in Manila in 2018 had a total of 4,893,593

via air and seaports alone. However, several factors need to be addressed for the project to be

successful, such as the following:

 Lack of tourist signages in tourist destinations

 The Philippine relief map in Rizal Park needs to be replaced

 Children’s park at Rizal park has visible deterioration

 Lack of street lights and pedestrian lanes inside Intramuros

 Poor lighting at the Club Intramuros Golf Course.

WHAT DESTINATION THEME DO YOU THINK IS FIT FOR MANILA’S TOURISM

CIRCUIT?

Historical Theme

The most suitable theme that will best fit Manila Tourism Circuit would be the

Historical Theme; its wide range of cultural and historical periods – American, Spanish,

Chinese, and Malay- created remarkable historical tourist attractions in the Philippines. As the

capital of the Philippines, Manila is considered the primary gateway of the 7,641 island

destinations, which is perfect for local and international tourists to visit and provide

a glimpse of Filipino history, visual art, museum, and culture. As the DOT announced that they

would work closely with Manila City Hall, the Historical Theme will strengthen and enhance the

beauty of the tourist attractions and other heritage districts in Manila to attract and improve

tourists' experience.
