Passage 1 (15 marks)

A. Read the passage and choose the best answer. ( 10 marks )

Despite constant reminders in the mass media of the need of a clean environment, we
are still plagued with complaints of filthy toilets, open burning of rubbish and indiscriminate
disposal of refuge. We do not have to go far to be convinced of the apathy of the general public.
You find rubbish at back lanes, rivers, drains and eateries. One such place is a monsoon drain
in Penang, as reported in a local daily. As the highly polluted drain joins a river, it has become
a source of pollutants to the latter.

It seems that the monsoon drain, which runs beside a wet market in the heart of the city,
has become a convenient rubbish dump for the traders. The drain is often clogged with all sort
of rubbish, the source of an unbearable stench to those who happen to pass by. Some motor
workshops nearby are responsible for the disposal of black oil into the canal. Even the public
are not innocent. Along the way, a variety of flotsam has accumulated. Consequently, the water
becomes stagnant and ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes. Wild vegetation appears at
certain stretches pf the drain. Indeed, the drain has become an eyesore, especially during the
dry season. Only when there is heavy downpour does its condition improve.

The question arises – who is responsible for cleaning the drain? The Public Works
Department claims that it is not its duty as the drain is not part of the road reserve. The Drainage
and Irrigation Department points out that it is only responsible for river systems. The local
Municipal Council says that the drain has not been handed over to it yet. The Department of
Environment remarks that it is not its responsibility for cleaning the drain except checking for
effluents discharged at the factory source. Perhaps the best solution is to check on the culprits
– the traders, workshop owners and those caught red-handed. Impose a fine on them or charged
them a small fee to pay for workers employed to clean up the drain.

It looks like the public still needs to be educated about the importance of hygiene and a
pollution- free environment. Campaigns like “Love Your Environment” should be intensified,
beginning from schools. Unless the indifferent attitude of the public is changes, whatever effort
put in by the various authorities may be futile.

1. In the sentence “…we are still plagued with complaints…”, the word “we” refers to
A. the public. C. the tourists.
B. the mass media. D. enforcement officers.

2. The word “apathy” can best be replaced with

Passage 2 (15 marks)

A. Read the passage and answer the following questions in complete sentences.

When Coco Chanel wanted to create her own brand of perfume, she told her
perfume maker to give her a fragrance that was new and modern. He worked on in for several
months and gave Coco something that would still be used by women for 92 years!

Coco Chanel was born in 1883 in France. She was named Gabrielle Bonheur
Chanel. Today she is popularly known as “Coco”. When Coco’s mother passed away, she
was sent to a convent. She learnt to sew and got a job as a seamstress when she was an
adult. She tried very hard to find work as an entertainer but ended up being a waitress.

Not long after that, she met a rich gentleman. He opened a shop for her to run.
Coco was impressed with the gentleman’s rich friends and the expensive clothes they spent
their money on. Later, she started designing hats for ladies. In the early 1900s, women still
wore hats when going out. Coco’s hats became small enterprise for her. Then, a famous
actress, Gabrielle Dorziat, modelled her hast in a play she was acting in and soon, every
woman in Paris wanted to buy a hat designed by Coco.

Coco then expanded her business from hats to clothes. She designed women’s
clothes made from everyday cloths. She paid her aunt and her sister to wear the clothes she
designed and walked about in Paris as a way of advertising her clothes. Many rich and wealthy
people bought the clothes designed by her. She became famous all over Europe, even among
tge royal families. Big movie stars wore Coco’s designs on the silver screen and made her
even more famous.

A famous dress designed by Coco is simply called “The Little Black Dress”.
Considered an essential dress in every woman’s wardrobe, it is as its name suggests – a
black dress. There are no other colours except black on the dress. Its design is simple. There
are no frills, no fancy ruffles and no decorative accessories. It is just a simple black dress.
Yet, the dress is so fashionable and alluring.

Coco did not stop at designing clothes and hats for women. She also wanted a
perfume to compliment her clothing line. Perfumes were basically divided two categories –
expensive, heavy scented perfumes that were used by rich aristocrats and cheap, light
perfumes that were used by everyday women. Coco wanted something that every woman
would be able to use.
