RELIGION GLOBALISM
- Concerned with the sacred - Places value in material wealth
- Divine commandments - Human made laws
- Communication between humans and - How much of human action can lead to
transcendence the highest material satisfaction and
- Less concerned with wealth subsequent wisdom that this new status
- Shun anything material things for produces
simplicity
These philosophical differences explain why certain groups “Flee” and create:

1. Sanctuaries where they can practice their religions without the meddling and control of state authorities (Ex.
Dalai Lama followers in Tibet, Rizalistas of Mt. Banahaw)
2. Opposition (Priestess and monk led the first revolts against colonialism)

REALITIES

 Religions are foundations of modern republics


 Theocracy
 Iran: Ayatollah Ruholla Khomeini
 Appropriate secular themes and practices
 Nahdlatul Ulama
 Shift in State Policy
 Church of England
 King Henry the 8th
 Annulment with Catherine of Aragon (1534)
- Historically, religion has always been at the very centre of all great political conflicts and movements of social
reform

RELIGION FOR AND AGAINST GLOBALIZATION

Assumption: Globalization= Modernization=New Beliefs= Eradication of old Beliefs. But in Reality;

- Globalization less as an obstacle and more as an opportunity to expand their reach all over the world
- Religion therefore is not the “regressive force” that stops or slow down globalization; it is a “pro-active force”
that gives communities a new and powerful basis of identity
- The use of English as a global vernacular
