Chapter 2 : Evolution to traditional to new media

Prehistoric Age

-life were simple compared to how we live now

-Communication was limited to a particular group it is because each tribe/group devised their own language
to communicate with each other

-Oral communication is the medium of communication during prehistoric time

Industrial Age

- which started in England and other European countries in 18 th century

-was marked by the shift from agricultural and handcraft economy to one dominated by machine and
machine manufacturer
-the British started to travel by train , and travelling by train would take hours to reach their destinations so
storytelling became part of their travel
-marked the use of iron steel
-new energy sources were used including fuel and motive power like coal, the steam engine , electricity ,
Petroleum and the combustion engine
-new machine were invented like the spinning jenny and the power loom which replace the use of human
energy
-the factor system was organized which increased division of labor and specialization function
-transportation and communication were developed like steam locomotive ,steamship, automobile, airplane,
telegraph, and radio
-there was increased in the application of science in the industry
-communication were developed like telegraph radio and telephone

Three types of industry

*Primary-used the different discoveries in science
-this includes agriculture, forestry, fishing, mining, quarrying and extraction of minerals.
*Secondary-manufacturing industries
-raw materials supplied by primary industries here processed in factories into consumer goods
-after 5 years of formal education, he decided to quit in 1859 at a young age on twelve
-he work as apprentice telegrapher at the age of sixteen as he was creative, imaginative, and curious
-was able to invent a duplex telegraph which can transmit two messages simultaneously in one wire and
print converted electrical signals to letters
- put up his own laboratory and machine shop to be able to explore and experiment on different inventions
in 1876
-he worked on the photograph and telephone at Menlo park as well as development of the incandescent
bulb
-develop the carbon-button transmitter which is still being used in telephones and microphones
-started the motion-picture industry as well as the alkaline storage battery
  Later, cassette recorders were invented in the last quarter of 1900.
 Betamax also became popular as these were recorded films that can be viewed thru a beta player.
 After the beta player, came the much improved video player with the CD(Compact Disc)of local and
international films.
 The DVD(Digital Video Disc) and the CD player became handy portable gadgets that are even used in
cars.
 Television has gone a long way, from the black and white TV, it is now colored and can access both
local, and international television networks

New Information Age

-the computer and the internet become the part of the everyday life of an individual. It is used in education,
in business, in government, in communication, in socialization ,in religion , and other activities.
-communication became so fast and a lot cheaper
-the computer also became compact and portable with the introduction of the laptop

1980-the desk top computer arrived in the Philippines

-energy producing industries like hydroelectric industry and construction industry were fully utilized

*Tertiary
-was developed to support the primary and secondary industries
-service industry, banking, finance, insurance, investment, real estate services. Professional, and eduction
promoted and provided the full development of the industrial age

Electronic Age
-made great contribution in the development of radio television, films, and the telephone as media of
communication

Thomas Alva Edison

-tried all kind of experiments on electricity in the last quarter of 1800
-there were no generic versions or computer ,it was either big IBM used in business offices or Apple desktop
-the programs were simple
-there were no Microsoft programs
-the word processing being learned was Wordstar, later it became Word Perfect, the application available
the were limited

1998-the telephone evolved into a portable gadget called the cellular phone , it was still heavy with antenna and it
can only be used for oral communication
-another gadget was the pager which used by most doctors so they can be reach easily
2000-the cellular phone became more compact and handy
-the mobile phone now offered text messages so it is now a talk and talk gadget.
