Worker Information Leaflet

Soon there will be a visit to your workplace by an organization which has been asked by the
customers which buy the goods you produce to find out more about your working conditions
and your rights at work, so please let your work colleagues know about this visit.

The visit is linked to the work of a much bigger project, based in Britain, called the Ethical
Trading Initiative (ETI). The ETI is an alliance of companies, (includes your customers) trade
unions and human rights and international development organisations, who are working
together to promote good working conditions and respect for workers' rights.

Customers who buy your products would especially like to know:-

 If your workplace is a safe and healthy place to work
 If wages are adequate for you and your families to lead decent lives
 If you are free to join independent trade unions and negotiate with the management
about wages and conditions
 If all workers, regardless of their sex, ethnic group, religion or political opinions, are
free from harassment at work and are treated equally and fairly in getting and
keeping a job, and in getting training and promotion.
 If there is any forced work, including any forced or unpaid overtime, or if overtime
hours are too many, and whether pay is ever withheld as a punishment
 If children are working in your workplace and if they are can they go to school
 If local labour laws are being enforced

A representative of [name of audit company] will visit here on [date if known] to discuss
these questions with workers and management.
You are invited by your customers and your management to take part and to discuss what
you think about working at the factory and to share with [name of Audit Company] your
suggestions for improvements.
These can then be discussed with your management to assist them in making any
necessary improvements.

The management of your factory is helping this process by distributing this information to
you

[Audit company name] will choose a number of workers, men and women from different
grades, to be involved in these discussions. They will also discuss matters with any workers
elected representatives e.g. your independent union shop stewards. It would be helpful if you
can discuss your ideas before the visit.

The interviews with [audit company name] will be confidential, no worker will be identified to
the management and [name of audit company] has make it clear to the management that
workers must be able to speak freely and not be punished in any way for speaking to the
auditors during the visit, including no loss of pay for time taken up by interview.

Any worker who is concerned about that, or who wants more information should contact
[contact name and details at audit company], before during or after the visit.

We need your active involvement to ensure this visit is useful. Please share this information
with your colleagues and be prepared for the visit on [date of audit]. After the audit the
management will share with you the results and details of actions to be taken.
