What is Information Technology?

Information Technology(IT) is the use of any computer , storage,

networking and other physical devices . Or in another word
Information Technology is the use of computers to create,
process, store, retrieve, and exchange all kinds of electronic data
and information. IT is typically used with the context of business
operations as opposed to a personal or entertainment
technologies. IT is the basically be the part of INFORMATION AND
COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY(ICT).
HISTORY OF IT
Information Technology in its modern sense firstly appeared in 1958 Harvard Business
Review article information technology that consists of refers to 3 basic parts:
1)Computational data
2)Decision support
3)Business business software

Day by day IT continue expand and developed . From 1960 onwards , there is very fast
development .Following devices set the stage of revolution of IT :

Screens
Mouse
Hard devices
Fibre optics
Integrated circuit
Programming languages like COBOL,FORTRAN
IMPORTANCE OF IT
There are various fields in which IT plays an important role :

Business
Education
Finance
Healthcare
Security
Communication
Employment

Mainly here we see why IT is necessary for Civil

Engineering.

Day by day we all become dependent on information technology like uses of smartphones ,
remote sensor etc ,.Here , there are some important fields where we use applications IT in the
area of civil engineering :
1)Designing structures with CAD software
2)Using drones for surveying land
3)Use of building information modelling
4)Use of big data
5)Remote sensing via cloud technologies
6)Development of water conservation technology
7)Used in 3D printing
1)Designing structure with CAD
software
Today’s civil engineers are more advanced than tape measures and graph
paper as they used in the past . The work also became easier and less time
taking . Civil engineers can create and design structures , tools, building in
3D space using AUTOCAD software which is very simple and made our task
easier too much.
2)Using drones for surveying land

Civil engineers found a new use for drones by using them

to survey land . They have found that aerial vehicles
provide a quick and the safest way of measuring large area
of land for surveying purposes without risking human’s life.
These drones map earth surface with incredible accuracy.
3)Use of building information
modelling
Today building information technology are in high demand . Civil engineers
using data visualisation and building information modelling(BMI)
technologies to create a more efficient and sustainable buildings . This is an
advanced system that helps keep track of all parts involved in constructing
building through various means like cameras throughout the site and data
gathered from sensors embedded with materials.
4) Use of big data
Big data means collection of extremely large amount of data at a time
like we all are collect big data from weather, traffic and environment to
determine the optimal phasing of activities to improve efficiency. Civil
engineers use big data to forecast the behaviour of natural disasters, so
that they can saves large number of lives at the construction site.
5)Remote sensing via cloud
technologies
Remote sensing is very advance technique used in our day to day life
and upcoming future . It allows remote monitoring with the actual
presence of human being. Now , Civil engineers can monitor
construction progress or site from their homes.
6)Development of water
conservation technology
In today’s era conservation of water is very important for all the living
beings . Thanks to engineers , they have developed many water
conservation ways for reducing water consumption like leak detection
system , toilet leak prevention devices , water flow management
devices , shower flow controllers etc.
7)Used in 3D printing
3D printing is the most important innovation in civil engineering
sector.3D printing enables civil engineers to prefabricated ready to be
used materials , both offsite and onsite area.3D printing largely used to
create bridges , houses and other structures that would be difficult or
impossible before.
