Summary:

“I’ve always heard for years that they say to people with Teratology of Fallot that you
can’t have babies. And I want to be one of those people that could and prove them
wrong.” The clip created by the Nationwide Childrens entitled “Pregnancy in Women
with Congenital Heart Disease: Importance of Evaluation and Counseling” focuses on
Brandi Phlipot’s journey on her pregnancy as an adult with congenital heart disease
patient. When she became pregnant with her firstborn, she strictly followed care and
monitoring from her doctor and nurses. Nurse Jenne Hickey was the nurse that focused
on Brandi’s condition and monitored her pregnancy to prevent significant complications.
While explaining the definition of the teratology of Fallot. During Brandi’s first
pregnancy, she is very excited and she strictly followed follow-up testing and
appointments to monitor her condition. In Brandi’s first delivery the hospital has clearly
followed their plan with Brandi and she was able to have a stress-free pregnancy. Emy
was born as the firstborn child and she was discovered to have Ventrical Septal Defect
(VSD), The hole was able to close on it’s own after four months. And Nurse Jenne was
able to explain that during 20 to 26 weeks of gestation it is important that the mother
should undergo an ultrasound to determine if there are any heart defects on the child.
Furthermore, Brandi was able to explain that if she had not care preparation, the
congenital condition of her daughter would come out as a surprise. Nurse Jenna explains
that Brandi’s life had been full of treatment and care, she explains how important care
and follow-up are important. Yet she explains that, not everybody has are able to
comply, and that is why they provide different options that can be used for people with
these anomalies. In the end, Brandi says that her doctors told her that she must be well
to take be able to be well enough to take care of her children.

Reflection:

Any heart defect is a task on its own. The teratology of Fallot is a serious condition that
may result in hypoxia due to heart hypertrophy, pulmonary stenosis, and septal defects.
I admire her dedication and bravery, Brandi is a strong woman with a conviction to have
a family and enjoy life to the fullest. Her struggles with her condition only made her
stronger to face this challenge as a smarter woman. With her pregnancy with her 2
children, she seems to be able to concentrate on her goal, and with her own proper
preparation and discipline. She enjoyed a stress-free pregnancy. Her planning was clearly
well-put, due to the help of Nurse Jenne Hickey. Multiple follow-ups and appointments
helped Brandi deal with probable problems that may occur. And with Nurse Jenne’s
dedication, the congenital heart defect Emy was born with. Did not prove to be a great
problem to Brandi, as she was prepared and cared of in dealing these types of situations.
In the short clip, let us not only follow Nurse Jenne, but follow the initiative of the
Nationwide Childrens to help every person with needs in their health. Helping them and
providing them with all equal care. Alongside proper planning, which is an important
aspect to ensure the success of any goal for any patient. Their goal is the cornerstone of
their health. And helping each patients attain their goal can help them teach in
preparation, prevention and evaluation towards their future health.
