object floats if the weight of the water it displaces is more than its weight. An
object sinks if the weight of the water it displaces is more than its own weight.

Resources Plastic bottle with cover, plastic saucer,pencil,eraser,metalspoon,largestone,plastic book
cover,rubberball,styroporecup,toy boat made of wood,toy duck made of rubber,toy doll
Needed:
made of plastic,a pail filled with water.
Teacher may use any objects in his/her area if some materials mentioned above are not
available.

Methodology
Introductory
Activity  Lets play “Pinoy Henyo”
(5 minutes)  Ask a pair of pupils to play the game
 One of them will give the clue and the other one will guess answer.
 The pair will just given two seconds to guess the correct word being
described.
 The following materials will be described: plastic bottle, polystyrene, rubber
cap, aluminum, foil and candy wrappers.
 The pair who gets four correct answer will be declared the winner.
 Collect all the materials used in the games
 Show them in the class
How did you find the game?
Ans; We find it very entertaining and interesting.
Say: Lets us go back to the activity we did our previous lesson. Can you still
recall?
What do you remember about the lessons?
Ans: filling the materials that absorb in water’
Ask: which materials absorb water and which do not?
Materials absorbed: cotton balls, sponges, paper
Do not absorbed: plastics wax, wax papers, raincoat
Why do they absorb water? And why they don’t?

Activity
(15 minutes)  Group the class equally into three.

 Instruct each group to get the materials needed from the teacher, and
let them perform the activity 1 in LM.
 Teacher will go around and follow up the activity each group is
performing.
 Tell the group that they will present their outputs.
Analysis
(10 minutes)  Ask each group to have their reporter present their data and answer the following
guide questions:
a. What did you observe when you placed the materials one at a time in water?
Ans: Some materials floats , other materials sink
B .Based on your activity , Which materials sink?
Ans: Answer may vary
c.Which of the materials float?
Ans: Answer may vary
d. look at the group of objects that floated. Compare them. Is there anything common
among each one?

Abstraction
(5 minutes) 1. Sink means to fall to the bottom of water, float means to stay on top
2. Some things float on top of water, some things stay submerged partway down, and some
things sink.
3. Some things sink very fast and some things sink very slowly
4. An objects shape can affect its ability to float, but some materials float no matter what
their shape –such as Styrofoam and balsa wood.
5. Some things float at first, but then sink as they absorb water or take water on through
holes.

Ans. People use floaters in swimming pool to keep them float in water
2. Explain why large boats or ships float on water
Ans. Large ships and boats float on water because the upward push of water is greater than
their weights.
3. Explain why life vest keeps you float in the sea ?
Ans. Life vest keeps us afloat in water because ,it makes us occupy a bigger space ,
increasing the upward force of the water on us and making us float.
