Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners, can continue
your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions, exercises, and
discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step as you
discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-test are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM. This will
tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module, or if you need to ask your
facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the lesson. At the end
of each module, you need to answer the post-test to self-check your learning. Answer
keys are provided for each activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using
these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teachers are also provided to the
facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can best help you on
your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of this
SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests. Read the
instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the tasks in
this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.

Thank you.

What I Need to Know

Introduction

In this module, you will learn several types of cohesive devices used by
writers to show coherence from one idea to another, from one sentence to another,
or from one paragraph to another. These devices also emphasize the importance of
different cues and markers that help sentences and paragraphs go together
smoothly in order to avoid abrupt jumps or breaks between ideas. Hence, it is
expected that at the end of this module, you will be acquainted with these different
signals and how it should be used in your writings.

Most Essential Learning Competency

Note implicit signals used by the writer to indicate coherence.

At the end of this module, you should be able to:

1.identify the different types of cohesive devices;

2.discuss the importance of cohesive devices; and

3.use cohesive devices in constructing sentences and paragraphs.

What’s In
In your previous lesson, you learned that emphasis markers are words and
expressions that emphasize a point according to their persuasive purposes in
writing and speaking. Examples of these are words such as and, then, but, now, in
fact, although, thus, therefore, which are also called as markers of transition.

However, it is important for you to understand that these markers should be

used in accordance to its function such as, to signal relation of time, similarity,
differences and consequences to carry out its core goal of achieving consistent and
logical relationship among ideas. Generally, these words are called Cohesive
Devices.

What are cohesive devices? What are the several types of cohesive devices?
When do you use them? You will find out more on these as you go through this
module.

Activity 3: What are my thoughts?

Directions: Answer the following questions. Write your answer on a separate sheet
of paper.

1. Based on the previous activities, what are the different types of

cohesive devices?

2. Why do we need to use cohesive devices in writing sentences or

paragraphs?

What are Cohesive Devices?

Cohesive devices are words that link parts within a written article. They are
signal words that facilitate the smooth interpretation of ideas of the readers in the
manner the writer wants them to be understood. Cohesive devices include
transitional words, expressions and paragraph hooks.

What do they do?

Cohesive devices aid you to understand a thought from one sentence to
another, from one idea to another and from one paragraph to another through
words or phrases. Cohesive devices link the gaps within your sentences and
paragraphs to ensure that there are no breaks and abrupt jumps of ideas.
Let’s look at these two examples below:

1. Facebook is a global social networking platform and it is used by

many people across the globe.
2. Facebook gives us opportunity to connect with others but it is also
a haven of cyber bullying.

As we can see in the first sentence, and is used to add something to the
previous statement resulting to a clearer understanding that the latter is a sentence
that gives supplementary information. In the second sentence, but is used to show
how something positive and negative is said about Facebook. Therefore, but is used
to contrast ideas or to show difference between ideas.

What are the different types of Cohesive Devices?

There are several types of cohesive devices, and each type leads your reader
to make certain connections or assumptions about the areas you are connecting.
Some direct your reader ahead and entail the building of an idea or thought, while
others enable your reader to compare and contrast ideas or draw conclusions from
the previous thoughts. Now, please take a look at the following examples on the
next page.

Transitional words have meaning and are not just used at beginnings of
sentences. These words can also be utilized to show relationships between different
parts of a sentence or a paragraph. As mentioned earlier, they cue readers to the
relationships from the preceding sentences or clauses. If you ever use inappropriate
transitional word, then readers will be confused with what you mean. Also,
sentences do not require cohesive/transitional devices all the time. Do not overuse
it.

Learning cohesive devices has never been this easy before, right? It seems
that you are now ready for another exciting activity! Come on, let us go ahead and
have some fun!
