STANDARD

1. SCOPE
This standard covers the requirements for the gaseous nitrocarburising of ferrous materials to
impart resistance to corrosion, wear, scuffing and seizure to the surface.

2. PROCESS CONTROL
Only those processes and processors approved by Perkins Quality Department may be
employed for nitrocarburising.

The process shall be proven by the contractor nitrocarburising the components and taking
suitable sections for metallurgical examination. Details of the surface hardness, microstructure
and compound layer thickness together with the prepared sections shall be submitted for
approval.

There shall be no change in the process procedure without approval from Perkins Quality
Department.

3. NITROCARBURISING PROCESS
Components shall be processed using a suitable controlled atmosphere for a minimum of three
hours at 570-590°C to achieve the quality requirements in Section 4.

Following the treatment the furnace shall be allowed to cool down to 400°C before removing
the load and allowing it to cool in still air. During the furnace cooling period the furnace door or
top may be opened.

4. QUALITY REQUIREMENTS
The thickness of the compound layer on the approval test shall be between 0.0005 and 0.0015
inches (0.013 to 0.038mm).

After processing a check shall be made on each production batch to ensure the compound
layer is present and continuous using 10% copper ammonium chloride solution. The sample
size shall reflect the batch quantity and previous results.
