1.0 API 505 Electrical Requirements for Drilling Rigs

American Petroleum Institute (API) specification 505 outlines all the requirements for
installing electrical equipment on drilling facilities. The TM120 wrench has been
designed to comply with all API requirements for electrical installation. Below is a
summery of the API 505 Specification that outlines the classification zone with respect to
well center. This API specification was written in accordance with the National Electric
Code specification 505.

API Defines 2 types of substructures that require different ratings with respect to
equipment mounted in the BOP (cellar) area. Type 1 is classified as an open sub
structure with no wind walls preventing ventilation. Type 2 is an enclosed sub structure
that impedes ventilation. Below are 2 drawings prepared by Canrig to simplify these
specifications.

The open sub structure only classifies an area 10 ft (120”) from well center. This area is
rated as zone 2 (Class 1 Div 2). Because the TM120 Wrench is located in this area and
the tong box travels in and out of the Zone 1 area (60” from well center), the tong box
must be rated to Class 1 Zone 1. Refer to the Tong Box section for more details. The
enclosure mounted on the side of the wrench never enters the zone 1 classification, and
there for is only rated to Class 1 Zone 2. On an open sub structure like outlined above,
none of the remaining wrench equipment must be classified.

In the second type of structure, we can see that the complete rig floor is classified as
Class 1 Zone 2 with the same 60” radius from hole center for Class 1 Zone 1. The
enclosures on the wrench tongs and arms do not need to change classifications, but the
remaining equipment for the wrench must change. For this reason, all of the remaining
equipment for the wrench install; (driller’s console, HPU, Radio Control) are rated for
Class 1 Zone 2. If a rig has an open sub structure, and tarps are installed for winter
operation, the classification for that rig changes from Type 1 to Type 2.

2.0 Tong Enclosure

Below is a picture of the outside and inside of

the Tong Enclosure. This box has a remote
purge kit that classifies it to Class 1 Zone 1.
The hydraulic valve that is used on the TM120
is a Hawe 5 Series. This valve has an Atex
rating of EEx m II T4. Attached at the end of
this document is the certification sheet from
Hawe.

3.0 Wrench Arm Enclosure

This box has a remote purge kit mounted to
it that purges only the lower tong enclosure.

4.0 PLC Enclosure

Below is a picture of the outside and inside of the PLC Enclosure. All
the PLC and power supply components are rated to Class 1 Zone 2
(Class 1 Div 2). The Hawe Valve driver cards are unrated devices, for
this reason a purge kit is installed to purge both the motor starter
enclosure and the PLC enclosure that are mounted on the HPU. With
this purge kit these boxes are rated at Class 1 Zone 2 (Class 1 Div 2).

5.0 Motor Started Enclosure
