Section 5: Operating Procedure

PRE- OPERATION INSPECTION

A Pre-Operation Inspection should be performed prior to each use and periodically
during extended shifts. Ensure you inspect the following:

1. Check for external oil leaks and repair as necessary. This is extremely important.
Low hydraulic oil could cause premature failure of the HPU.

2. Check the lubricant level in the spinner gear box. Top up as necessary.

3. Check hydraulic hose and fittings for damage. Replace chafed or deteriorated
hoses as necessary.

4. Check for loose, missing, or corroded bolts, pins, keepers, and cotter pins.
Replace or tighten as necessary.

Make sure the rotary table is UNLOCKED during wrench

operation. Failure to have rotary table unlocked could result
in property damage, severe personal injury or death.

Revision August 2007 5-3

Canrig Torq-Matic Floor Wrench

WARM-UP PROCEDURE
A warm-up procedure is essential at ambient temperatures below +40°F (4°C). Run the
warm up function for a minimum of 5 minutes, allowing sufficient time to warm up the
system if the wrench hasn’t been used in the last hour. (See Section 2.3, page 2-8)

Failure to properly warm up the wrench, particularly under

low ambient temperature conditions, may result in
spinner roller and clamp die slippage due to high
backpressures, which could result in
property damage, severe personal injury or death.

5-4 Revision August 2007

Section 5: Operating Procedure

OPERATING CHECKLIST
NEVER RUN THE WRENCH OR SPINNER ON COLLAR SPIRALS OR HARD
BANDING!

1. Ensure personnel are clear of work area BEFORE operating wrench.

2. Read all warning and caution tag information provided for safe operation of the
wrench.

3. Inspect the wrench at the beginning of each work shift. Defects should be corrected
immediately.

4. Make sure the rotary table is unlocked.

5. An equipment warm-up procedure is recommended for all start-ups and essential at

ambient temperatures below +40°F. (See Warm-up Procedure page 17.)

6. Use the Device Test Screen to cycle each device to check for normal operation prior
to operating wrench in auto mode.

7. Select the desired Pipe Profile from the Pipe Profile Screen or manually enter
desired torque value on the Main Screen.

8. Adjust Trip Position by pressing the number box. Position is measured from the fully
retracted position forward. The Hole Center position and the Park/Home position can
also be adjusted in this manner.

9. To run the wrench from the Driller’s Console, select Make/Break Console on the
Main Screen.

10. To enable Wireless Radio Control, select Make/Break Radio on the Main Screen.

5-6 Revision August 2007

Section 5: Operating Procedure

OPERATION
Extending and retracting the unit can be done in two modes: Low Speed Manual
Positioning or High Speed Auto-Positioning.

Low Speed Manual Positioning

• Clicking and holding the Joystick to the right causes the unit to move towards Hole
Center at slow speed.
• The unit will auto-stop at Hole Center.
• Releasing the joystick at any time causes
the unit to stop.
• Clicking and holding the joystick to the left
causes the unit to move away from Hole
Center towards the Parked position.
• The unit will auto-stop at the Trip position
and at the Parked position.
• To continue moving from the Trip position,
release the joystick and click and hold it to
the left.

Revision August 2007 5-7

Canrig Torq-Matic Floor Wrench

HIGH SPEED AUTO-POSITIONING

• Double clicking the joystick to the right enters the unit into High Speed Auto-
Positioning Mode
• This will cause the unit to ramp up to full speed and then ramp down and stop at
Hole Center.
• Double clicking the joystick to the left
enters the unit into High Speed Auto
Retract Mode and will cause the unit to
ramp up to full speed and then ramp
down and stop at either the Trip position
or the Parked position depending on
where the unit started.
• If the unit stopped at the Trip position,
double click to the left again to move the
unit to the Parked position.

Once in High Speed Auto-Positioning Mode, the joystick can be released and the
unit will continue to move. To stop the unit either hit the Stop Button or Single
Click the Joystick in the opposite direction.

Note: There is a HS Override feature (see Settings Screen) that is used in the
event that the position sensor is damaged and inoperable. When activated, the
unit can be moved in Slow Speed Manual Positioning Mode only.

There is no feedback of position to the PLC when the HS Override button is

selected so the Operator must visually position the unit. The Parked, Trip and
Hole Center positions will not function. Extra care must be taken when extending
and retracting so as not to damage the unit.

5-8 Revision August 2007

Section 5: Operating Procedure
Interlocks

The unit will not retract from Hole Center unless it has been lowered enough to clear the
derrick structure (Carriage unit) or raised enough to clear the floor (Arm unit). The
Upper Tong Clamp, Lower Tong Clamp, and Spinner Clamp must be open.

The unit will not extend to Hole Center unless the Upper Tong Clamp, Lower Tong
Clamp, and Spinner Clamp have been opened.

Rotate
To align the wrench with Hole Center or Mouse Hole, press and hold the Reset button
while using the horizontal joystick to move the wrench left or right. Make sure to
carefully align the wrench side to side on the pipe making sure the opening in the
wrench tongs is centered on the pipe.

Note: Never operate the wrench when not centered on the pipe. Premature wear
of the upper and lower tong pivot rings and bushing and rotation drive will result.

Vertical Lift
The Vertical Lift function is controlled by the PLC where joysticks are used to tell it to
either lift or lower the unit. Click and hold the joystick up to lift the unit or click and hold
the joystick down to lower the unit. Release the joystick to stop.

Interlocks

The unit will not lift until it has been moved forward far enough to clear the derrick
structure, and the unit can not be raised or lowered until the spinner clamp and tong
clamps have opened.
