INTRODUCTION AND SPECIFICATIONS

1.1 Use of this Manual


This equipment manual contains valuable operation, maintenance and troubleshooting
information. However, it cannot foresee every eventuality that will arise while working with, or
working on, the rig. While every effort is made to ensure that the information included in this
manual is accurate and complete, no guarantee is made to that effect. When a situation of
doubt, uncertainty or lacking information exists, the engineering and/or service departments at
Stewart & Stevenson should be consulted.

1.1.1 Revisions and Amendments


With complex items of equipment, manuals invariably undergo some alteration after issue.
When this becomes necessary, the relevant pages or documents shall be delivered to each
manual holder. They should be inserted into the manual and a description of the changes or
additions should be noted on the Revisions and Amendments sheet at the front of the book.

1.1.2 Third Party Information


This manual includes various datasheets, user information, drawings, service information etc.
relating to component parts of the DTS-00750 Drilling Rig that were manufactured or supplied
by other companies. This information is included in order to aid in the identification, operation
and service of the equipment. It should be noted that these documents are not controlled by
Stewart & Stevenson, and no guarantee is made regarding their accuracy or completeness. If
information is required beyond what is supplied in the provided documents, contact the
engineering and/or service departments at Stewart & Stevenson.

1.1.3 Modification or Repair of the Rig


Please consult the Stewart & Stevenson engineering and/or service departments before
carrying out any modifications, repairs or overhauls of this equipment.

1.1.5 Note, Caution, Warning and Danger Statements


Throughout this manual statements may appear which emphasize important and critical
information. These statements will be set off from the rest of the text, and will be formatted and
defined as set out below.

DANGER: indicates an imminently hazardous situation, which, if not


avoided, will result in death or serious injury. This type of statement is
limited to only the most extreme situations.

WARNING: indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could


result in death or serious injury.

CAUTION: indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in
minor or moderate injury, or serious damage to equipment. It may also be used to

1.2 Statement of Warranty

Statement of Warranty Policy


1. Stewart & Stevenson Inc. warrants the Equipment to be free from defects in material
and workmanship for a period of TWELVE (12) months from the Date of Delivery.
2. Stewart & Stevenson Inc. reserves the right to inspect the Equipment to determine
the validity of the warranty claim and. if determined to be valid, Stewart & Stevenson
Inc. will, at its option: (1) replace the defective Equipment or parts thereof; or (2)
authorize the Equipment or part to be returned to its authorized repair facility for
repair; or (3) authorize the Equipment or part to be repaired at the Purchaser’s plant.
Stewart & Stevenson Inc. will not be responsible for any transportation costs.
3. Repair or replacement will be without charge, but removal and installation of other
parts, including additional parts furnished, will be made at the Purchaser’s expense.
No charges will be accepted for returns, repairs or alterations done by the Purchaser
unless previously authorized in writing by Stewart and Stevenson.
4. The Purchaser acknowledges that the Equipment is of a size, design and type
requested by the Purchaser and agrees that, except as stated herein, there are no
other warranties, express or implied, including those for merchantability or fitness for
particular use, which Stewart & Stevenson Inc. hereby disclaims.
5. The Purchaser is to pay all freight/flight charges as well as travel expenses for
warranty work performed away from the Stewart & Stevenson Inc. fabrication facility.

Not Covered Under this Warranty


1. Equipment or parts manufactured by others; however, Stewart & Stevenson Inc. will
assign the benefits of any manufacturers’ warranties if assignable.
2. Equipment or parts that are or have been in contact with corrosive chemicals or
corrosive materials.
3. Equipment or parts customarily subject to wear.
4. Failure resulting from improper use or inadequate maintenance.
5. Personal injuries or death to any person (including the Purchaser and any of their
employees, agents and/or contractors) or claims for loss or damage to property or
business, either direct, indirect or consequential, caused or contributed to by the
Equipment or any failure thereof, regardless of whether caused by Stewart &
Stevenson Inc. or any other person or by any fault or negligence of Stewart &
Stevenson Inc., its employees, agents and contractors.
6. Mileage in excess of 200 miles from a Stewart & Stevenson Power Products LLC
facility (USA only).
7. Overtime charges are not covered under the warranty and are extra. Weekend rates
may apply.

1.5 Unit Specifications

1.5.1 Self Propelled Back-In Carrier


The S&S Crown DTS-00750 Drilling Rig is a self-propelled, back-in type unit. It is
manufactured with wide flange main beams and an all welded frame. Heavy-duty front and rear
bumpers, equipped with heavy-duty tows, are welded to the carrier frame. It also includes
integral stairs built into carrier frame, one on each side. The carrier is fitted with 18 inch wide
driller’s and off driller’s side folding walkways, with handrails and toe guards, driller’s and off-
driller’s side removable steel stairs to ground level, complete with handrails.
A mast lay down support (headache rack), with heavy-duty spreader arms, is mounted on the
front of the carrier. It is designed to prevent the carrier beams from twisting due to mast weight
by transferring the weight to the suspension.
The unit’s highway lighting package features turn signal lights, clearance lights, headlights,
stop/brake lights, back-up alarm, and reflectors. The lights are fully wired to the controls and
the switches are located in the driver's cab. All wires are routed through cable hangers located
in the carrier frame and are shielded to protect them from damage.
Tire flaps are also installed behind the tires.

Stewart & Stevenson Inc. (Crown ) is certified to manufacture Trailers


and Carriers that meet all the required Canadian and United States Federal
Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.

Stewart & Stevenson Inc. (Crown ) is registered with the National


Highway Traffic Safety Administration as a manufacturer of Motor vehicles
using the assigned WMI: 2C9/173 for trailers, and 2R9/678 for Trucks.

1.5.1.1 Driver’s Cab


The rig is fitted a with an insulated single-man driver’s cab. This is equipped with a steering
column and steering wheel, acceleration and brake pedals, turning signal switch, adjustable
bucket seat with safety belt, dome light, windows (complete with a roll-up window in the door
and a sliding side window on the off driller's side), and a front 12V electric wiper. The cab is
also equipped with a cab heater.
The installed control panel consists of the following:
Gauges: Speedometer, Tachometer, Transmission Oil Pressure, Transmission Oil
Temperature, Fuel, Air Pressure, Engine Oil Pressure, Engine Water Temperature, and Volt.
Controls: Head Light, Dome Light, Dimmer Control, Fan, Wipers, Washer, Low Air, Air Horn,
Engine (Start/Stop), Shutdown Override, Diagnostic Request, Emergency Shutdown,
Differential Lockup, Park Brake, and Lever Gear Selector (Transmission).
Indicator Lights: High Beam, Check Transmission, ABS, Check Engine, Shutdown Engine, Low
Coolant, and Low Air (c/w audible alarm).

1.5.1.2 Running Gear


The running gear consists of three front non-drive steering axles with rear wheel Tridem axles,
and one non-drive tag axle.
The front steer axles are Dana Steer Axles 69-1/2 in KPL rated at 24,000 lb per axle. The front
axles are equipped with six 445/65R22.5 tires.

The rear drive axles are Dana tandem drive axles rated at 52,000 lb and drag axle rated at
25,000 lb. The rear wheels are fitted with twelve 12R22.5 tires. Mud flaps are installed behind
rear wheels.

1.5.1.3 Leveling Jacks


This unit is equipped with four mechanical locking hydraulic jacks and, two drop-down
mechanical belly jacks, mounted on the carrier frame for leveling and support during rig
operations. The jacks are located at the rear bumper, and behind the rear steering axle.
The S&S Crown drop-down mechanical belly jacks are mounted to the carrier frame to
provide additional leveling and support. These jacks are located between the front and rear
axles.
1.5.1.5 Fuel Tank
This unit is fitted with one, 100 gallon, fuel tank. This is mounted on the off driller’s side and is
equipped with lines and check valves.

1.5.1.5 Tool Boxes


The carrier is equipped with two tool boxes. One tool box (36 in. L x 48 in. H x 10-1/2 in. W) is
mounted on the carrier deck. A steel toolbox (36-1/8 in. L x 18 in. H x 18-3/8 in. W) is mounted
on the underside of the carrier frame.

1.5.1.6 Winch
Two 12,000 lb hydraulic planetary winches are included with this unit.

1.5.1.7 Deadline Anchor


One S&S deadline anchor, 50,000 lb for 1-1/8 in. wireline, is mounted directly to deck. This is
used for compression type hydraulic weight indicator load cell supplied by the customer.

1.5.1.8 Engine
The engine is a Detroit Diesel Series 60 DDEC, turbo charged, and air-to-air after-cooled
engine. The six cylinder, fully integrated, heavy duty, 14 liter diesel engine is rated at 600 BHP
@ 2100 RPM. This fully integrated heavy-duty diesel engine with electronic controls has
excellent fuel consumption, durability, and low emissions.

1.5.1.9 Engine Specifications


Rated Power Output: 600 BHP at 2100 RPM.

1.5.1.10 Transmission
The Allison Transmission Model M6610A Series straight through transmission, comes complete
disconnect and controls. This transmission is designed for use with diesel engines up to 850
net HP.

1.5.1.11 Power Take-Off


Two Chelsea power take-offs are transmission mounted and pneumatically controlled.

1.5.1.12 Power Take-Off Case


A power take off box is installed to drive wheels. This unit is used to split power from
drawworks to rear drive axles. Drawworks straight through drive will allow full HP.

1.5.1.14 Right Angle Drive Gear Box


The right angle drive gearbox supplies power to the drawworks.

1.5.2 Model CE750SD Drawworks


The DTS-00750 Drilling Rig features a S&S Crown Model CE750SD, New Style single drum
drawworks.
It features a single drum, single shaft drawworks mounted on a heavy-duty framework with
sheet metal covers. Auxiliary braking is achieved through an Eaton WCBD-424 Assist Brake:

1.5.2.1 Eaton Assist Brake


An Eaton Model WCBD-424 assist brake, water cooled is installed complete with piping to the
edge of the driller’s side of the carrier for external water source.

1.5.2.2 Brake Water Cooling Manifold for Main Drum and Auxiliary Brake Cooling
The water cooling system manifold for cooling main drum band brakes and auxiliary water
brake comes complete with all necessary piping to edge of the unit and controls. It also
includes connection for outside water supply.

1.5.2.3 Crown Saver


An automatic crown saver safety shutoff device to limit block travel is installed on drawworks.
This device automatically disengages the clutch and sets main drum brake when block comes
too close to crown block or required travel is reached.

1.5.3 Mast
The DTS-00750 Drilling Rig is equipped with a 118 ft, 350,000 lb guyed telescoping mast with a
fixed base. It is designed and built in accordance with American Petroleum Institute (API)
Standard 4F using three-dimensional non-linear dynamic finite element software. The mast is
manufactured with all HSS components, ensuring minimum weight and maximum stability.
The maximum hook load capacity is 350,000 lb on eight lines.
The mast is equipped with a ladder mounted on the off-driller's side. The safety platform,
handrails, and a fall arrest post are included with the crown frame assembly. The mast is also
equipped with a block cradle, two belly lines and two load lines.
Two, 3-stage, chrome plated, hydraulic cylinders are used for raising the mast, and are
equipped with safety chokes to prevent free-fall in the event of a complete loss of hydraulic
pressure. The mast incorporates two single acting, chromed, telescoping cylinders for raising
the top section.
The crown platform allows the crown blocks to be serviced safely.
The crown block assembly comes with:
• Three, 30 in. fleet sheave grooved for 1-1/8 in. drill line
• One, 36 in. fastline sheave grooved for 1-1/8 in. drill line
• One, 30 in. deadline sheave grooved for 1-1/8 in. drill line
• One, 24 in. sandline sheave grooved for 9/16 in. drill line (optional)
The sheaves are all steel. They are mounted on tapered roller bearing inserts so that bearing
failure will not damage the sheave. Fittings are provided for individual greasing of bearings.
Mast Specifications:
• Capacity: 350,000 lb with 8 lines
• Height: 118 ft.
• Line String Up: 8
• Wind Load: 69 MPH (60 knots) as per API 4F
Mast cable option includes guylines for internal guying.

1.5.3.1 Racking Board


This rig is equipped with an automatic erecting racking board for use with 16’ substructure. The
welded fingers are with 5” spacing for 4-1/2” drill pipe.
Specifications:
• Capacities for 11,500 ft of 4-1/2 inch drill pipe with 6-1/4 inch tool joint;
• Positioned for use with Range II tubulars in doubles;
• Complete with provisions for rear escape system.

1.5.4 Control Panel


The S&S Crown Control Panel is normally mounted at a 16 foot substructure floor height. It
is designed to function in all weather conditions from sub-arctic to tropical climates (-40°C to
+55°C).
The operator’s control panel consists of the following controls and gauges:

1.5.5 Hydraulic System


The hydraulic system supplies power for carrier operations and consists of a 340 gallon
hydraulic tank, a hydraulic gear pump with rated capacity of 50 gpm, a hydraulic return filter,
filler/breather, all related valves, pressure gauge, hydraulic control valves, and tong pressure
control.

1.5.6 Air System


Air supply for normal rig operation equipment consists of:
• An engine mounted air compressor;
• An air receiver system;
• Pneumatic plumbing (valves, drains, lubricators, filters and gauges);
• And a single air dryer.

1.5.7 Drill Line Spool Rack


A mechanical drill line spool rack for 3000 ft. of 1-1/8” drill line is mounted on the rig trailer
gooseneck with a steel storage spool (wireline is customer supplied).

1.5.8 Electrical System


Equipment selection and classification of areas is in accordance with current API Standard
North American Electrical Code.
Any additional fixtures as well as an optional 120/208 Volt, 60 Hz distribution panel are
available. The optional distribution panel includes breakers for mast lighting, utility outlets,
engine enclosure lighting, connection to a 30A 4P 4W receptacle and some spare breakers.
Where practical, the lighting wiring is in rigid conduit with flexible terminations in liquid tight flex
or rough service cord. The connection of mast lights is of RL 80 cord connectors.
Switches for mast lighting with receptacles are installed on the carrier’s safe area.
