Monkeys that Dine Epically

East Bali Community of Tenganan Under Siege by Hordes of Monkeys.
Bali dance, drama and folklore abound with stories of armies of monkeys doing both good and bad. These stories cannot be far from the minds of the residents of the traditional community of Tenganan Pengringsinan near Almapura who have been literally under a siege recently by armies of destructive primates. The village chief (kelian) of Tenganan, Wayan Yasa, told Radar Bali that thousands of hectares of agricultural land have been devastated by monkeys who have destroyed cultivated fields and even the private gardens surrounding the homes of local

Some pet owners who failed to clean up after their dogs got a nasty surprise from their apartment complex manager.
Using DNA evidence, the manager started fining the irresponsible dog owners $100 per offense. The property manager at Twin Ponds in Nashua, New Hampshire, started using a dog DNA-testing system to reveal which pooches were leaving feces scattered about outside. Logan says the DNA technology called "PooPrints", developed by BioPet Vet Labs of Knoxville, Tennessee, is working "amazingly" well for Twin Ponds, a 339-unit complex that is home to about 241 dogs. "And for a property manager to not have to guess who the violator is, is absolutely wonderful. Dog-friendly Twin Ponds, located near the border with Massachusetts, is BioPet's largest client using PooPrints to solve the mystery of who left the offending mound. Using doggie DNA to solve the smelly who did it is becoming increasingly popular in apartment complexes nationwide from Jupiter, Florida to Rockville Center, New York, where violators are fine up to $1,000 per steaming pile. At Twin Ponds, all tenants with a dog now must use a PooPrints pet DNA sampling kit when they move in. To set up a profile, owners come to Logan's office, swab their dogs' cheeks for a saliva sample, and Twin Ponds then sends that to BioPet, which creates a reference database that includes all the community's canines. When a canine deposit is left on the communal grounds,

Doggie DNA nails owners of pets leaving smelly piles

Twin Ponds mails BioPet a gumball-sized sample of feces to be matched to a pooch via DNA. BioPet claims its testing has a 99.9 percent accuracy rate. DNA is the individual biological coding that makes each creature unique. "It's really not a Big Brother-type thing, and we don't test a lot of feces," said BioPet president Jim Simpson, noting that the firm probably tests just a half-dozen samples per month for Twin Ponds. "So the program is doing what we want it to do and what the property manager wants it to do simply to encourage folks to clean up after their dogs, so they don't have to have employees and services out there doing it," he said. Simpson and Logan both believe the majority of pet owners are responsible people who dutifully clean up dog droppings. Only an estimated 10 percent, or less, of the dog waste at a group of residential complexes polled by BioPet goes unscooped, Simpson said. Nevertheless, complaints about dog waste nationally have been piling up in recent years. An average dog leaves behind 276 pounds of it a year, according to the PooPrints web site. And there are about 77.5 million owned dogs in the United States. That's enough to fill 800 football fields to a depth of one foot, BioPet says. The problem of dog excrement hit No. 6 on the list of America's top gripes last year, according to a survey by Consumer Reports. On top of that, experts say serious health and environmental concerns go along with unscooped pet waste. Even though livestock account for the vast majority of animal waste, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection A g e n c y ( E PA ) , d o g s a r e significant contributors to source water contamination. Probably the greatest human health concern linked with animal waste is harmful pathogens like Cryptosporidium, Salmonella, Giardia lamblia and E. coli, the EPA says. So far this year at Twin Ponds, Logan has issued about 20 fines to residents for failing to clean up after their dogs. If a resident refuses to pay, she begins eviction proceedings the following month.

How about a beer with your iPhone?

You can do a lot with an iPhone these days -- text, take pictures, surf the net, and even make a phone call.
And soon, thanks to two Australian entrepreneurs, you will be able use it to open a bottle of beer by way of the "Opena," a hard plastic case that fits over the iPhone and is equipped with a slide-out bottle opener. "Basically, Australians are fairly heavy drinkers, as you may or may not know,"We're always out at friends' houses and so on, and in some cases you may not have your keys on you... So we thought, why don't we attach a bottle opener to an iPhone case? We always have our phones on us." Working from three basic rules -- the case had to be slim, there had to be no chance of the opener scratching the iPhone, and prototypes were too weak, development went smoothly. Start-up funding via an internet site that allows anybody to pitch in, has also gone well, enabling a sales launch within weeks. "The strangest thing that happened was when we were doing the filming for the video and we had a courier drop off a parcel," He gave us some very unusual looks when we had about 20 open beers at seven in the morning." Though some who posted on the pair's Facebook page expressed doubt about the wisdom of putting a phone that close to a foaming beverage, the response was mainly positive."Finally I can combine my love of drinking and tech,"

the opener had to work without putting any pressure on the phone -- the two developed a prototype. Testing including running through what a promotional video termed "the worst case scenario" in which a friend has shaken up the beer and it foams over. The case -- and the iPhone -- came through unscathed every time. Aside from a few initial glitches because the first

BALI THE RIGHT WAY

'day again too all the loyal readers of the Kuta Weekly. I see the school holidays are in full flight around town with a heap of extra braided haired people walking the streets looking for a bargain on that special bintang tank top or t-shirt. I even spotted a braided beard the other day and thought how happy the beach seller would have been to get the job and the laughs that it probably caused Aaliasj@kutaweekly.com amongst the crew while it was being done. I expect the pictures will be up on that bloke's facebook before too long. A great time of the year to be in Bali with the weather getting a little cold at night but for the most part, the days being excellent. I like to perch myself up at one of the many little places along the way and just people watch while enjoying a cheap feed and a few beers before an afternoon swim or sleep. You gotta love this place. Speaking about love, I did have a good week in the tipping with the Friday night game being the upset of upsets throwing a cat amongst the pigeons (for a lack of better words). The Eagles got up and deserved to take the win, with an impressive game to put the Mighty Pies on top of the ladder where they belong. My heartfelt love goes out to the lads from West Coast for knocking Geelong out of the top spot, but I will remind all the Eagles supporters to get ready for a loss to the Pies, should you make the grand final, as you're simply not that good. So long as you give it your best you will be fine just prepare for a devastating loss. The second half of the season really is turning into some great footy. I believe one of the Bintang taste testers even backed the Cats against the Eagles for a cool 500k, and had to hand it over at the games end. Bugger hey mate, sucked in. Alright folks, I've been told to keep it short this week as the news content is too great, so I will away for now. Be safe, happy, healthy and always remember, the hardest tumble a man can make is to fall over his own bluff. Enjoy your week, ALIASJ.................................

Brussels court vault bursting with crime evidence

carefully marked boxes, but there is little obvious sense that the boxes themselves have been placed in any particular order. "I am pleased to say that we never have any difficulty finding things," Luc Hennart, president of the Brussels court of first instance said "The big problem that we them in the vaults for too have at the moment is the lack of long. space. Any time a bit of room is found, Items used as evidence it is used up because there's just more in trials are kept until and more and more." Investigators, he said, bring in prosecutors decide they are no longer needed, at which point they are destroyed, sold or returned to their previous owners. However, prosecutors can take a while to determine that an item can be released. In June, the justice officials burnt 2.7 tonnes of narcotics which had amassed in the basement. "It's like Ali Baba's cave," Viviane Waegeman, head clerk of the Brussels criminal court, said while walking through the stuffy, kilometre-long corridors. As well as the more obvious tools of crime, there are carpets, heaters, bicycles, child seats for cars and a plaque for soccer club Standard Liege. "There's just too much. Some 80 percent of the pieces are totally useless," said Waegeman's colleague Patrick Van Leeuw. One reminder of the inefficiency that the system is dealing with is the hand of a 1994 murder victim which was severed from the body during an autopsy and put into an alcoholfilled jar. The victim had scribbled a phone number on the back of his hand and it therefore became evidence, but the alcohol has since eaten away all t r a c e s o f t h e n u m b e r. Nevertheless the partially decomposed hand remains in storage.

French train robbers revive Wild West tactics

In a scene taken straight out of an American Wild West movie, masked men robbed a freight train in southern France after blocking the railway tracks with shopping carts and metal beams. The daring attack on the northern outskirts of the southern French city of Marseille saw a passenger train hurtling into the blockade forcing it, and a cargo locomotive behind it, to stop. "Attacks on trains aren't new, but it is a pretty rare phenomenon," a police union official in the area said."It's worthy of stagecoach attacks in the Wild West," About 20 bandits looted several carriages and then vanished into the night. It was unclear what was taken. Nobody was injured in the attack, but thieves had put people's lives in danger. 4 The railway union said in a statement that while such attacks were rare, The robbery was a sign that the railway authority was not investing enough in the security of its sites.

Investigators turn to final vault at treasure temple

dollars, with investigators unwilling to Investigators plan to pry open the final vault hidden deep under a centuries-old Indian Hindu temple as disclose the official amount and the ambiguity police guarded round the clock the shrine where involved in valuing the priceless jewels and gold billions of dollars worth of treasure has been coins by weight. Police set up a dedicated control room discovered. Over the last week a seven-member team of investigators has broken into five of the six secret subterranean vaults piled high with jewels that have lain untouched for hundreds of years. Onlookers and devotees thronged the shrine in the bustling centre of Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of India's southern Kerala state, as officials said treasure worth more than $20 billion had been found . Sacks filled with diamonds were piled next to tonnes of gold coins and jewellery in the vaults of the 16th century Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple, the royal chapel of the former rulers of Travancore, now part of Kerala state. "The current market value of the articles found so far by the committee members would be roughly 900 billion rupees ($20.2 billion), Investigators searched the vaults to draw up an inventory of the riches because of worry about security but they had no idea of the amount of treasure they would find. Estimates of the haul's worth range across billions of close to the temple on Monday, as state Chief Minister Oommen Chandy pledged full state security for the hoard and promised it would remain the property of the temple after an inventory was made. "We are ready to protect the temple wealth. We will chart out measures for the permanent security in consultation with the Travancore Royal family, which administers the temple now, and the chief priest of the temple, Historians supported the estimates of the treasure's value, noting the lucrative trade routes that passed through the region for many centuries. "Traders, who used to come from other parts of the country and abroad for buying spices and other commodities, used to make handsome offerings to the deity for not only his blessings but also to please the then rulers," said P.J. Cherian, director of Kerala Council for Historic Research. As estimates of the treasure's worth rise, a fierce debate is growing regarding what to do with the discovery, in a country where 450 million people live in poverty. Leaders of the Hindu community want the wealth to be invested in the temple, while many intellectuals, including former Supreme Court judge Justice V. R. Krishna Iyer have suggested it should be used for the public good. The government has said it would adhere to the Supreme Court's ruling on ownership of the treasure found in the temple, which is still controlled by the royal family unlike other temples in Kerala which are managed by the government. The vaults were searched after a lawyer petitioned the country's top court to order the government to take over the temple as it did not have adequate security. Several temples in India have billions of dollars worth of wealth as devotees donate gold and other precious objects as gifts to spiritual or religious institutions that run hospitals, schools and colleges. The Tirumala temple in eastern Andhra Pradesh state is reported to have 3,000 kg (6,600 lb) of gold, a third of which it deposited with the State Bank of India last year, while spiritual guru Sai Baba, who died in April, left behind an estimated $9 billion estate. Yoga guru Baba Ramdev, who staged a fast against corruption last month that lead to protests against the government, has built a $40 million-a-year global empire through yoga and various spiritual products and services.

By the end of 2010, the Number of Motorcycles number of registered motor Tr a v e l i n g B a l i ' s R o a d s Estimated at 1.5 million Units vehicles totalled 1,765,372 of The State News Agency Antara estimates there are more than 1.5 million motorcycles operating on Bali - an island with a population of nearly 4 million. Traffic authorities estimate that each day another 500 new motorcycles are purchased and launched onto the island's already crowded roadways. The Department of Transportation, Information and Communications for Bali estimates that over the past 12 years the number of motorbikes in Bali has increased 10.01 percent. Sugeng Sugianto, the head of the Department, said that in 1998 there were 569,305 registered motor vehicles in Bali. From that total, 436,614 (81.4%) were motorcycles. which 1,509,750 (85.5%) are twowheeled motorized bikes. Sugianto said: Every day between 300 and 500 new motorcycles leave the factories and are sent to Bali. These vehicles are in great demand by the Balinese as a form of daily transportation. The traffic official blamed the high volume of motorcycle traffic in Bali as a major cause of the island's worsening traffic problem. The Secretary of the Bali Transport Organization (Organda), Yus Suhartana, agrees, contending that easy credit terms for people wishing to buy motorcycles puts these vehicles within the reach of the general public. By paying a deposit of only Rp. 500,000 to Rp. 1 million a

the declining appeal of farm work for the Balinese. Professor Nyoman Suparta, a noted educator, says a major change of perception is needed to reverse the decline in those wanting to work in farming or pursue an academic career in agriculture. To illustrate his concerns, Suparta points to four private and public universities in Bali that experienced a decline from 288 agricultural students in 2001 to only 88 in 2006. Of that declining total, 30% are believed to be students who originate from areas outside of Bali. The professor said students view agriculture as a field with little promise of future security and social-economic status. Www.balidiscovery.com

Still, you can't stop thinking about recent difficult situations, mostly because you're concerned you've upset somebody. Instead of worrying, ask them. You'll be surprised what they have to say. You love it when others say what they need to say swiftly and clearly and then move on. But at the moment you're dealing with the reverse, somebody who's beating around the bush. Annoying as this is, try to be patient. What they have in mind isn't just important, it could be crucial.

Former Nazi resort rebuilt as huge youth hostel

The idea of a mass tourist resort and the design's steel-reinforced concrete architecture won it an award at the 1937 Paris world exhibition. The original building plans foresaw a structure of eight housing blocs. World War Two put an end to the Nazi vision however, and building stopped in 1939. The resort was never finished. Today, five building blocks remain usable thanks to the robust design, which have withstood strong sea winds and decades of neglect. In 1944 and 1945 the building housed refugees fleeing from the advancing Soviet Red Army. After the war the Soviets took over, followed by the East German military. Despite its historical legacy, it is also a site of resistance, as Schmidt points out. Those who rejected conscription to the army in East Germany were sent to Prora to become "construction soldiers.

Taurus
Recent contentious exchanges made you wonder if others weren't being difficult for the sake of it. While, actually, that was probably true, the concerns they had in mind were valid and still are. The difference is now they're finally willing to talk about these matters, which means you can give them a hand.

Scorpio
Being suspicious of offers that seem too good to be true may be natural. And wise. But judging by the recent spectacular alliance between the bountiful Jupiter and your own ruling planet Pluto a few days ago, things aren't just good, they're brilliant. You need only agree to offers or opportunities.

Gemini
You really must say a firm no to certain ideas you've regarded as promising, if somewhat complicated. Consider the amount of time, energy and creativity you've invested in these and how little you've gotten in return. While you can still hope a turning point will be reached, it's becoming less likely by the day.

Sagittarius
The problem isn't a shortage of facts about exciting new ideas. You're happy to learn what you need to while you explore. But those whose support you need aren't nearly as flexible. Gather what information you can now, enough at least to ensure that they're confident the ventures you're undertaking are worthwhile.

Cancer
There's still plenty of fallout from the recent pivotal, if unsettling, Cancer eclipsed New Moon. Enough that this week's events could take second place. They shouldn't. While contending with so much could seem overwhelming initially, you'll soon realise that what you learn from one actually contributes handsomely to dealing with the other.

Capricorn
A day or so before every Full Moon everybody's feelings tend to come to a head. However, because this Friday's is in your sign, the odds are good you're already far more aware of your emotions than usual and, of even greater importance, it's to be hoped you're discussing those feelings frankly.

Leo
When you were actually dealing with the setbacks triggered by recent tricky aspects between your ruler the Sun and various planetary heavyweights, you were no more than exasperated. Since then, however, you've actually been grateful for the slowdown they caused and, more importantly, the resulting analysis of the obstacles you were facing.

Aquarius
Few things are more frustrating than dealing with those who won't say what they think or feel. But that's exactly what you've been contending with. Yet when you review recent conversations, you'll spot certain clues. While piecing these together into facts could take time, what you learn will justify the effort required.

Virgo
While you're well aware that sometimes it's not until discussions become heated that the full facts emerge, such clashes are still wearying. But now that you know exactly what the situation is and, as important, what others intend to do, you'll find it far easier to make plans that are sound and sensible.

Pisces
Forgiveness may be a virtue. But in one or two situations you're trying to come to terms with, what's taken place has left you worse off, financially or in other important ways. Discuss these concerns, and precisely, and make it clear that these must be dealt with before you'll consider putting issues behind you.

Lawyer sentenced for shooting fellow hunter

A Pennsylvania attorney who shot and killed a fellow hunter by mistake in 2010 while hunting for deer on his own property was sentenced to up to 25 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter and gun violations. Victim Barry Groh, 52, was shot and killed in November 2010 in suburban Bucks County shortly after he had called his wife to say he had bagged a deer. David Manilla, 49, who was hunting separately on his own property nearby, pleaded guilty to the charges. Common Pleas Court Judge Albert Cepparulo sentenced him to the maximum twoand-a-half to five years for manslaughter plus seven-and-ahalf to 20 years on the gun violations. Because Manilla had been convicted of aggravated assault in 1985, he was not allowed to have any firearms under state law, prosecutor Robert James said. A search of Manilla's house yielded some 90 weapons and a bag of ammunition, he said. The prosecutor said Manilla failed to call promptly for emergency help and tried to hide the rifle that killed Groh. Manilla also fired a claim it was inconsistent with the fatal rifle wound, James said. "Justice was served," James said of the sentence. Defense attorney Keith Williams said he would seek to have Manilla serve time in a western Pennsylvania prison with a medical facility because Manilla has had three heart attacks and has six arterial stent implants. Manilla, of Worcester, Pennsylvania, specialized in drunk driving cases when he practiced law.

As part of the Nazi's Strength through Joy program, the resort's aim was to prepare up to 20,000 citizens for war through organized leisure. Fast becoming one of Bali's most popular attractions, this island paradise is a world away from the hassle and hectic pace of South Bali. Neither hawkers nor traffic mar the magnificent scenery; this is a fine place to just put your feet up and relax. Main activities include surfing, diving and snorkelling. The water is some of the clearest you will find anywhere, and a vivid aqua blue in colour. Nusa Lembongan is approximately 8 square km in size, and is one of three neighbouring islands, the others being much larger Nusa Penida and tiny Nusa Ceningan. The three islands are separated from Bali by the Badung Strait. Some visitors may f i n d N u s a Lembongan a little slow after the pace of South Bali. Many areas around the island are good for diving and snorkelling, with abundant marine life and healthy coral. Surfing can get a bit crowded, but the waves are good. There are several white sand beaches away from the main centres which are virtually never crowded. There is a flourishing and well established seaweed farming industry here, and many visitors find it interesting to learn about this. Two main beach areas have traditionally attracted visitors. Jungut Batu in the northwest is the bigger of the two, and has myriad hotels and cheap eateries. This is island. The white sand beach here is pleasant enough but nothing to get too excited about, and it is a little narrow in places. In more recent times, the hillside to the south of Jungut Batu known as the Bukit (the hill) has been developed and has attracted higher level hotels. The views from the Bukit are perhaps second to none on Nusa Lembongan. Sunsets are best viewed along the main Jungut Batu beachfront. island is fringed by a mangrove forest, and the eastern side of the island is separated from neighbouring Nusa Ceningan by a shallow estuarine channel. The main population centre of the island is Lembongan Village in the southern interior, and it is here that you will find the homes of most traditional island families. The only realistic way (although you can charter a helicopter [1]) to reach Nusa Lembongan from Bali is by boat. There are several options according to budget and speed. Most of the scheduled services leave from Sanur Beach at the end of Jalan Hangtuah, and involve getting your feet wet. The exact departure and arrival point on this beach depends on the tide. Other services run from Benoa Harbour, and there are local public boat services to and from Padang Bai and Kusamba in East Bali, but these are not recommended for reasons of safety and comfort. The attractions here are mostly natural. The beaches and other coastal landscapes are obviously a key draw, as are the sunsets. Retirement...
One day, while going to the shop, I passed by a retirement village. On the front lawn were six old ladies, lying naked on the grass. I thought this was a bit unusual, but continued on my way. On my return trip, I passed the same retirement village with the same six old ladies lying naked on the lawn. This time my curiosity got the better of me and I went inside to talk to the retirement village Administrator, and asked her? Do you know there are six ladies lying naked on your front lawn? "Yes she said, "aren't they darlings? They're retired prostitutes - they're having a garage sale.

"No, tolio . The disease only affected my toes." When the groom took off his pants, his bride once again asked "What's wrong with your knees? They're all lumpy and deformed!" "As a child, I also had kneasles," he explained. "You mean measles?" she asked. "No, kneasles. It was a strange illness that only affected my knees." So he was overjoyed two months ago when he met C h i n k i ' s c a r e t a k e r, a priest in a nearby village, who proposed that the two monkeys be married. "We will welcome the bride in our house in Banetha after the wedding with all rituals," said an excited Ramesh while offering tea to Raju at a roadside tea shop. Hundreds of invitation cards were sent out to nearby villages for the wedding, planned according to traditional Hindu customs that include seven rounds of the sacred fire as the wedding vows are recited by a priest. A huge prewedding feast was planned, along with a procession with Raju on a horse. "It's an open invitation to all the villagers. I am expecting more than 2000 people for the feast," Ramesh said as he stood with Raju near a huge cooking pot to supervise. But no good love story is complete without a little hiccup. As news of the marriage spread, the state forest department officials stepped into action. Since monkeys are protected in India as government property, no one can pet them, train them or -- as in this case -- marry them, even to a fellow monkey. "It's illegal to marry a monkey. Anyone found doing that or attending the marriage ceremony will be arrested," said forest range officer Bhavar Singh Kaviya. Tensions rose in both villages after officials issued their final warning. The monkeys and their owners went into hiding. On the day of the planned wedding, more than 200 guards poured into Talwas, where they confronted hundreds of people from nearby villages who had arrived to see the rare spectacle. "I have come all the way just to watch God's marriage and now the police are telling me to go back and stay away from the temple," said Prem Jain, an angry 72year-old villager, after arguing with a policeman. "They told me the monkeys have been captured. They can't capture God!" But then came the news - the monkey couple had been secretly married off in a ceremony somewhere deep in the forest. The villagers erupted in joy and began celebrating. Forestry officials immediately set out to look for the pair and finally found Chinki tied to a tree. She sported the vermillion mark worn by married Hindu women on their foreheads. The officials couldn't resist congratulating Chinki

and posed for pictures with her. "She is like my daughter and I am doing the duties of a good father," said a smiling Kaviya, carrying the monkey to a jeep. Both monkeys were captured and officials said they hoped to release them soon in nearby forests, but Ramesh was confident of their eventual return. "I know my son Raju, with his wife Chinki, will come back home," said an emotional Ramesh, mingling with the crowd to avoid being caught. "I will have a big reception for them.

Even the steamier offerings of romantic fiction are dismal failures when it comes to each have to juggle daily jobs or cope with addictions, disabilities and even domestic violence. Even so, these books fail miserably when it comes to sexual pleasure and dealing with the ups-and-downs of relationships, she says. "We want women to be aware of their own desires rather than be 'awakened'. We aim to reassure our female clients that their first time may not be utterly joyful and that they may not gain reliable orgasms through penetration, but that they themselves are none the less existentially valid and that with affection and good humour things can improve immensely. "We warn of the stresses of pregnancy and child-rearing, and we discourage relentless babymaking as proof of a relationship's strength." According to figures cited by Ms Quilliam, romance accounts for nearly half of all fiction bought, and some fans read up to 30 titles a month. For all its popularity, the genre has only been rarely explored to see how influential it is on its readers, says Ms Quilliam, who suspects though that it could have massive clout. "What we see in our consulting rooms is more likely to be informed by Mills and Boon than by the Family Planning Association," she says.

Wholesome yarns like this form the heartbeat of romantic fiction, a genre that has been in existence since the mid-18th century and today sells by the bucketload. But, according to a debate launched on Thursday by a medical journal in Britain, romantic novels are an invisible yet potent threat to women's sexual and emotional health. A commentary blasts these formulaic books for failing to promote safe sex and encourage patience in achieving female orgasm - and for defining the success of a relationship as the ability to crank out babies. "If readers start to believe the story that romantic fiction offers, then they store up trouble for themselves," says British author and relationship counsellor Susan Quilliam. "Sometimes the kindest and wisest thing we can do for our clients is to encourage them to put down the books - and pick up reality." Ms Quilliam, writing in the Journal of Family Planning and Reproductive Health Care, says that, according to a survey, only 11.5 per cent of romantic novels mention condom use. "And within these scenarios, the heroine typically

The typical bodice-ripper ends "with the heroine being rescued from danger by the hero, and then abandoning herself joyfully to a life of intercoursedriven orgasms and endless trouble-free pregnancies in order to cement their marital devotion." In fairness, says Ms Quilliam, romantic fiction today has broadened its spectrum. Standard characters such as the brutal count and apple-cheeked maid have been supplemented by single mums,

Waite will visit a specialist later this week to see if needs an operation on his hip. Sunday was only his second game back after missing three matches with a hamstring injury. In more bad news, midfielder Andrew Carrazzo will also miss the Collingwood clash. He was a late withdrawal from the Bulldogs match because of a calf muscle injury. While the Magpies regained top spot with a 117point demolition of North Melbourne, Carlton dropped from third to fourth following the Bulldogs loss. Saturday will be a major credibility test for the improving Blues, who lost to Collingwood in round three by 28 points. They have a four-game losing streak against the reigning premiers.

Blues lose Waite for up to a month

Feeling Blue: Jarrad Waite faces a month out.
Carlton's decision to risk Jarrad Waite on the weekend backfired, with the key forward out of AFL action for up to a month. Waite might need surgery after scans on Monday showed he has cartilage damage in his hip. He was subbed off in the second quarter of the Sunday twilight loss to the Western Bulldogs and the club said post-match that it was groin tightness. One of Carlton's most important players had also been hopeful about being available for Saturday's blockbuster against archrivals Collingwood. "These things happen in football, you can't predict what's going to happen," Waite said. Coach Brett Ratten had also said immediately after Sunday's match that he was

Come on, Kangas.

The Kangaroos promised us all week in the lead-up to their seasondefining clash with Collingwood that they'd be more competitive than their first meeting with the premiers. They fooled us. The
117-point disaster means that in two matches with the Magpies they've lost by a combined total of 204 points. Ten goals is a bad loss, 12 is harrowing, an average of 17 is plain embarrassing. Even in wet conditions at the MCG the Kangaroos couldn't drag Collingwood down to somewhere near their level. The latest loss means Brad Scott's mob haven't beaten a top-four side since 2009. They want the respect o f t h e competition but, despite saying all the right things, don't compete when they get to the big time. They can still scrape into the eight but it'd be a waste of time on exposed form. Skipper Brent Harvey was criticised for naming those who aren't carrying their

weight at Arden Street last time they fell to Collingwood. The trouble is he was spot on. Scott described the thrashing as disgraceful; hard to disagree.

A controversial IVF lottery will launch in Britain this month giving prospective parents the chance to win thousands of pounds toward expensive fertility treatments in top clinics.
The scheme, which the media have dubbed "win a baby," has already run into trouble on ethical grounds with critics calling it inappropriate and demeaning to human reproduction. Britain's Gambling Commission has granted a license to fertility charity, To Hatch, to run the game. Every month, winners can scoop 25,000 pounds' ($40,175) worth of tailor-made treatments at one of the UK's top five fertility clinics for the price of a 20 pound ticket bought online. The tickets may eventually be sold in newsagents. The lottery is open to single, gay and elderly players as well as heterosexual couples struggling to start a family. If standard IVF fails, i n d i v i d u a l s c a n b e o ff e r e d reproductive surgery, donor eggs and sperm or a surrogate birth, the charity says, though the winner will only be able to choose one treatment. Winners will be put up in a luxury hotel before being chauffeurdriven to a treatment center. They

"It trivializes what is for many people a central part of their lives," it added in a statement. Josephine Quintavalle, from the campaign group Comment on Reproductive Ethics, said "creation of human life should not be reduced to a public lottery ... this demeans the whole nature of human reproduction." The Gambling Commission said it had noted reaction to the scheme but said it had no regulatory powers to intervene and that any decision to revoke a license would be a government one. "This particular example, perhaps, has thrown up some questions which may need looking at and whether that is by us or the government I don't know," a spokesman said. "There has been concern expressed about this, but from our perspective it's a pretty straightforward granting of a license application for a lottery operator. Around one couple in seven suffers from fertility problems in the UK, according to the fertility regulator. Latest figures show 40,000 patients were treated with IVF in 2008 which led to 15,000 babies being born as a result of that treatment.

Old-fashioned blockbuster.
Carlton-Collingwood games are always big, but this weekend's clash at the MCG is going to be huge. It's first versus
fourth in the traditional Saturday afternoon slot, and the emerging Blues desperately need a big scalp to earn the respect of the competition's heavyweights. Recent losses to West Coast and Western Bulldogs have put Carlton at risk of coughing up the topfour position that looked almost a foregone conclusion three weeks ago. The Eagles are lurking just two points back and could pounce with a win over St Kilda on Saturday. As for the Pies, you get the feeling that Mick Malthouse would love his charges to be tested even if it has to come from the old enemy.

GWS throws big bucks at Scully

In demand: The Giants' chase for Tom Scully has stepped up a level.
The management of Melbourne midfielder Tom Scully has confirmed that Greater Western Sydney has made a substantial, five-year offer for the talented young midfielder. GWS has reportedly offered Scully $1 million a season to leave the Demons and join the fledging club from their first season in 2012. "The license couldn't have come at a better time with drastic (government health service) budget cuts ... where in most cases IVF is the first on the hit list, rendering most couples resorting to private treatment." But some medical and ethical groups condemned the game and the Gambling Commission said the issues it had thrown up may need further scrutiny. Britain's fertility regulator, The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority said using IVF as a prize was "wrong and entirely inappropriate."

Stuart refuses to bite over Meninga attack

Stuart says he has not even read Meninga's scathing attack.
NSW State of Origin coach Ricky Stuart has refused to buy into Mal Meninga's stunning attack on rugby league officialdom despite suggestions some of the Queensland coach's vitriol was aimed at him. Meninga ensured an ugly postscript to the Maroons' sixthstraight series win by taking a swipe at the "rats and filth that tried to poison a monumental team with lies, personal attacks, arrogance and disrespect" in his weekend Brisbane newspaper column. While targets appeared wide-ranging, it is believed Stuart was among them as Meninga said the attacks had come from people he had considered friends. Stuart and Meninga have a relationship that dates back to their days as premiership-winning players at Canberra in the late 1980s and early 1990s. N o w opposed in a heated interstate rivalry it s e e m s t h e friendship has been tested, with Meninga admitting in the lead-up to last week's series decider that Stuart had got under his skin with some of his pre-game barbs. S t u a r t refused to bite however, claiming he had not even read the article. "It doesn't concern me, it doesn't affect me - it was a game of football that we didn't win and that's what I was more disappointed about, but I'll move on," Stuart said. "I went into the sheds after the game - which is hard to do after a loss - but I went in and shook his (Meninga's) hand and said the best
