5.11 Maria Al Qibtiyya (RA)

Maria Al-Qibtiyya was an Egyptian Christian, who was sent
to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as a gift from the Egyptian
ruler. The year of her birth is unknown and there is a
controversy about her being married to Prophet (PBUH).

In 628, the Egyptian ruler sent two slaves to Prophet

Muhammad (PBUH) as a gift among which Prophet
(PBUH) selected Maria Al-Qibtiyya. According to some
narrators she remained a concubine of Prophet (PBUH),
while others say that she married Prophet (PBUH) after
converting to Islam. Prophet (PBUH) had a son from her
named Ibrahim, who died after sixteen months of birth.
Regardless of whether she was married to Prophet
(PBUH) or not, she was reverend as other wives of
Prophet (PBUH).

Maria died five years after the death of Prophet (PBUH) in

year 637 CE, and was laid to rest in Jannatul Baqi.
