(4) Ikhfaa Haqiqi
‫إﺧﻔﺎء ﺣﻘﻴﻘﻰ‬
Linguistic definition:
Hiding ,covering ,concealement

Applied definition:
• It is to pronounce noon sakinah or
tanween in a way between Idghaam
and Izhaar with ghunnah remainning on
the first letter ( no shaddah on the
second letter)
What are ikhfaa letters ?
Ikhfaa letters are 15 letters. They are any letters other than
 Idh-haar letters ‫ء ه ع ح غ خ‬
 Idghaam letters ‫ي ر م ل و ن‬
 Iqlaab letter ‫ب‬

So Ikhfaa letters are the rest of Arabic alphabet letters after

taking out the letters of Idh-haar, Idghaam and iqlaab.
So the 15 ikhfaa letters are

Ikhfaa
Ikhfaa sign in the Quraan
Quraan
Noon has no sign.

Tanween has two parallel fath-hs , two

parallel kasres or two parallel dummas
• In other words, they are not typically on
each other
Conditions of Ikhfaa Haqiqi
• It appears in one word and between two
words

• The letter next noon sakinah or tanween

has no shaddah: EX
The reason of its name
• It was called Ikhfaa because the sound of noon saakinah or
tanween totally has gone /hidden.
• So we pronounce hidden noon at the ikhfaa letters with
keeping prolonged ghunnah 2 counts.
• The level of ghunnah here is complete ghunnah.

• It was named Haqiqi( real) to achieve ikhfaa at its letters (a hidden

lingual part of noon sakinnah).

• In other words as all the scholars agreed noon saakinah should be

hidden with prolonged ghunnah when is followed by ikhfaa letters.
The cause of Ikhfaa Haqiqi
• Due to the distance between the articulation
point of noon saakinah and ikhfaa letters.
• The makhrj of Ikhfaa letters are not close to
the makhrj of noon saakinah and tanween
like idghaam letters, nor they are not far
from the makhrj of noon saakainh and
tanween as in idh-haar letters .
• That is why we pronounce noon saakinah in
a way between idh-haar and idghaam.
Way of pronouncing ikhfaa haqiqi
 Correct pronunciation is obtained by
placing the tongue in a position of
readiness to articulate the letter following
noon while holding the ghunnah for nearly
two counts.
 The tip of the tongue should not touch the
upper part of the mouth during the
ghunnah Otherwise noon will be evident
and not hidden, and this is to be avoided.
Cont. Ikhfaa Haqiqi
• The ghunnah should be followed  the
ikhfaa letters in term of heaviness and
lightness
• If the ikhfaa letter is heavy the ghunnah
will be heavy.

• If the ikhfaa letter is light the ghunnah will

be light.
• Move directly from the letter before noon
sakinah or noon of tanween to the letter after
noon sakinah or noon of tanween
• Then come out the prolonged ghunnah while
I was holding the makhrj of the ikhfaa letter .

Common mistake

It is wrong to stretch the vowel of the letter

that precedes the noon by lengthening the
damma before it, the kasra or the fatha, so
that the letter madd is generated
