SERVICE-LEARNING
“course-based, credit bearing educational experience in which students
(a) participate in an organized service activity that meets identified
community needs,
(b) reflect on the service activity in such a way as to gain further
understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline,
and an enhanced sense of personal values and civic
responsibility” (Bringle and Hatcher, 1995, p. 112).
What is a service-learning class?
includes students in performing community service as a requirement for a course.
Students discuss the experience with the goals of the course through directed
reflection and learning exercises.

Why is Service-Learning important

Service-Learning broadens the academic experience while also giving students a
more in-depth education.

Service-Learning strengthens students' and faculty members' involvement in the

community, motivating them to take on additional leadership roles. Socially conscious and
service-oriented citizens.
How is service-learning different from community engagement?
Community Engagement
The democratic principle that everyone should have a say in the decision-making
process surrounding an issue that affects their community is the foundation of
community involvement. Additionally, it holds the promise that public
involvement can have an impact on choices that affect the delivery of services,
long-term goals, and the sustainability of our communities.
(eg. Ensuring that disaster affected communities have accurate and timely
information enables their meaningful participation in humanitarian response.)

Service Learning
Among the many ways to participate with your community is service-learning. is
a requirement for students in some courses, however Faculty members who
participate in community activity are said to be engaged in the community.
What is the purpose?
Serving the underprivileged community and improving student learning are the two main
objectives of service-learning.by providing a service.

What are the types of service-learning activities?

1. Direct Service-Learning is person-to-person, face-to-face service that has an impact on the
people who receive it.direct student assistance
(eg. tutoring, interactions with seniors, children's art projects, peer mediation, training
and seminars.).

2. Projects for indirect service-learning that benefit the community as a whole rather than a single
person
(eg. coastline cleanup, improvements to school infrastructure, resource mobilization,
including drives for food and clothes).
3. Working on projects that involve advocacy, service-learning, acting, speaking, writing, teaching,
presenting, informing, etc. Encourage people to take action or raise awareness about issues of public
importance

(e.g., promoting reading, peace, environmental protection, local history, preventing drug use
and violence, and preparing for disasters).

4. Research Service-Learning - data collection, interviewing, evaluations, experiments, effect

assessment, finding, gathering, and reporting information on subjects of public interest
(eg. renewable energy, community health, etc.)profiling, testing the water, research on
flora and fauna, and surveys).
