Separating Solutions and Mechanical

Mixtures
In this lesson, we will examine the methods used to separate various solutions and
mechanical mixtures.
Engage Separating Solutions and
Mixtures

The components of a solution have very similar properties and characteristics, which makes them difficult
to separate. The most common strategy involves changing the state of matter (e.g., changing the solute or
solvent from a solid to a liquid) so that it can be removed from the solution.
Can you think of other ways to separate the substances in a solution? Make a list in the textbox
below.

Separating mixtures is viewed as easier than separating solutions. This is because the components of the
mechanical mixture are usually quite different from each other.

Separating a mixture of sand, salt
Explain and water

Instructions:
In the last video, the question was
posed “How will you separate a
mixture of sand, salt and water from a
cup?”
Assuming that you have
also mixed these
substances together for an
experiment, decide the
steps that you would take to
separate each one. In the
textbox to the right,
describe the steps using the
information learned in this
lesson so far.
