Mixtures and their

characteristics
Objectives:
At the end of the lesson pupils will be able
to:
• Describe the appearance and uses of
homogeneous and heterogenous
mixtures
• Prepare beneficial and useful
mixtures such as drinks, food and
herbal medicine.
• Recognize that mixtures are made of
different forms of substance.
What Is A
Mixture?
A mixture i s a material formed by the physical
combining of two or more different substances.

Mixtures can take many forms:

2+ Solids 2+ Liquids2+ Gases ANY

combination of solids, liquids & gas gases

Characteristics of Mixtures

1. The composition of a mixture

is variable or changeable.
• For example saltwater its properties
depending on how much salt is dissolved in
the water. The more salt, the saltier the
saltwater becomes. This will do able change
the freezing and boiling temperature of
saltwater.
Characteristics of Mixtures

2. Each components in a
mixtures retains in the
characteristic properties.
• In the saltwater mixtures the properties of salt
do not disappear. Although salt connot visibly
be seen in saltwater you can still observe its
taste.
Characteristics of Mixtures

3. The components of mixtures

are easily seperated.
• In a fruit or vegetable salad. You can easily
seperated the fruit or vegetable.
Kinds of
Mixtures
according to
State
Solid Mixtures

• Combinations of solid substances.

Liquid Mixtures

• May originally be a
combination of a solid
and a liquid in which the
solid is dissolved
completely.
Gaseous Mixture

• Is another kind of mixture. Air is a

mixture of different gases.
Kinds of Mixtures according to the appereance
of the relating mixtures

There are 2 major kinds of mixtures:”

Heterogeneous Homogeneous

Means “different” Means “the same”

You can see the You cannot see

different parts the different parts
(phases) of the (phases) of the
mixture easily mixture
Heterogeneous Mixtures

• This kinds of mixtures according to the

appearance of the resulting mixtures.
Homogeneous Mixtures

• This kind of mixture wherein you cannot

see the components seperately and one
that appears uniform thoughout – only
one phase of matter is observable.
Which Kind of
Mixture?
Classify each type of mixture as:
Heterogeneous Homogeneous

Any Questions?
Heterogeneous
mixture is a kind of
mixture wherein you
can distinguish the
components separately.
The components of a
heterogeneous mixtures
can easily be separated
by physical means.
SEPARATING MIXTURES
You can separate the components of a mixtures by
the following methods or ways:
1. Manual Separation – this is the method used
for sorting different
substances in coarse
mixtures and in
mixtures whose differ in
size.
2. Filteration – this is a of separating a
mixture with the use of
a porous materials.
Porous material - a material that has
very fine holes that are
invisible to the naked
eye.
Example:
strainer filter paper
fine mesh screen cloth
3. Distillation

this is a of separating a liquid into

a component parts. It is done by
vaporizing the liquids one by one and
subsequently condensing it. Use for
separating solutions with a number
of components parts.
4. Magnetic Separation
this process used a magnet to separate the
magnetic components from the non – magnetic
one.

5. Freezing or Cooling

this is used to separate the components of liquid

mixtures. The liquid that has a higher freezing
point solidifies first. It is separated easily from
the other components that is still in the liquid
state.
4. Magnetic Separation
this process used a magnet to separate the
magnetic components from the non – magnetic
one.

5. Freezing or Cooling

Any Questions?
