MELC #3 : Distinguish mixtures from substances based on a set
of properties.
Quarter :1
Week :4

OBJECTIVES:
A. Identifies the two types of mixture;
B. Differentiates the two types of mixture;
C. Performs an experiment about mixture; and
D. Appreciates the importance of mixtures in our everyday lives .
LET’S HAVE A RECAP…

MATTER
Anything that occupies space and
has mass.

PURE SUBSTANCES MIXTURES

Is a substance that are made of Is a combination of two or
only one type of atom or only more substances that are not
one type of molecule. chemically combined.
LET’S OBSERVE…
QUESTIONS:

1. What have you observed in the picture?

2. What is the difference between the two pictures?

3. Which picture shows a

homogeneous mixture?

4. How about
heterogeneous
mixture?
MIXTURE
It is made up of two or more substances that are
not chemically combined with each other.
The components of a mixture retains its own
identity and properties.
The separation of components can be easily
done.
Mixtures are classified based on how uniform they
are and on the particle size of components relative
to each other.
MIXTURE
HETEROGENEOUS HOMOGENEOUS
HOMOGENOUS MIXTURE
A mixture in which the components are evenly
distributed throughout and has a uniform appearance.

HETEROGENOUS MIXTURE
• A mixture in which the components are not evenly distributed
throughout.
• Heterogeneous mixtures possess different properties and
compositions in various parts.
• The properties are not uniform throughout the mixture.
