Element - Compound
• When two or more different elements are joined tightly together

Elements

Compounds
Mixtures
• Consists of two or more different elements and/or compounds
physically intermingled (mixed), not chemically bound
• Can be separated into its components by physical means,
• Each component retains its properties.
Element – Compound – Mixture?
Air is a mixture of gases
Mineral water is a mixture
• In a bottle of water there is more than only water
• The water contains other substances
• The minerals are dissolved

1. Look at the label. List the

three most abundant
minerals in this bottle of
mineral water
2. Is Sea water a mixture or a
compound?
Separating mixtures
• Mixtures can be separated into their substances by using physical
methods (i.e. no chemical reaction involved)
• These techniques include:
1) Filtration
2) Evaporation
3) Distillation
4) Chromatography
1) Filtration: Separating a solid from a
liquid
• Separation based on
the size of the
particles.
• Big particles of the
mixture cannot go
through the filter.
• Filtrate is what goes
through the filter.
1) Filtration: Separating a solid from a liquid

Liquid particles
small enough to pass
through the filter
paper as a filtrate.

Solid particles too large to pass through the filter

paper and stay behind as a residue.
2) Evaporation: Separating a solid from a liquid
• By heating the liquid it will evaporate and the solid will remain in the basin
Safety in Chemistry
• I will give you practical chemistry tasks this week:
• You will have the freedom to decide how to do them.
SAFETY FIRST!
• Don’t use fire
• Don’t use dangerous / corrosive chemicals (like bleach)
Activity: 8.3: Separating mixture Water-Sand-Salt
• Make a mixture of Water-Sand-Salt
• Use 100 ml of water
• Decide how much sand and salt you use. Remember to measure it!
• Separate the mixture using:
1. Filtration
2. Evaporation
• SAFETY FIRST
• The scientific report will be graded
• Behaviour counts
