Mixture Element Compound

4
SUBSTANCES & MIXTURES:

5
ELEMENT : It is made up of only one type of
particles. Examples : iron , gold

6
COMPOUND :It is made of one or more
components in definite proportion. Examples
: water (H2O) , common salt (Nacl).

water Sodium chloride

7
HOMOGENOUS MIXTURE The components of
:

a mixture dissolved completely and cannot be

seen. Examples : lemon juice , salt water

8
HETEROGENOUS MIXTURE: All the
components of the mixture are visible
because they do not mix together .example
: mixture, sand in water

9
WHAT IS SEPARATION?
• The removal of substances from a mixture of
two or more substances is known as separation.
NEED FOR SEPARATION:
• To obtain two different components.
• To obtain the useful components from
unwanted substances. 10

• To remove impurities or harmful components.

METHODS OF SEPARATION:
• HANDPICKING • SEDIMENTATION

• THRESHING • DECANTATION

• WINNOWING • FILTRATION

• SIEVING • EVAPORATION 11
RECAP:

• The removal of substances from a mixture of two or more substances is known

as separation.
• Element is made of only one atom whereas compound is made of one or more
components in definite ratio.
• In homogeneous mixture, components cannot be seen and in heterogeneous
mixture components can be seen clearly.
