Description:
The Elliot-class of destroyers first entered service in the Orlamu Navy towards
the end of the Second Galactic War. Envisioned as a fleet escort vessel, these
destroyers carry several different small craft weaponry, providing it with a
layered defense. These ships are also equipped with an excellent engineering
plant, allowing it to achieve very high acceleration rates.

The primary battery of the Elliot-class of destroyers is five mass cannons mounted
in single gun mounts, three forward and two aft. Each weapon enjoys a wide arc of
coverage overlapping in the two broadside arcs, allowing all five cannons to bear
on a single target if desired. In the secondary battery, the ships mount sixteen
light pulse lasers in four mounts. Each mount is located in a different arc of
fire allowing for complete 360 degrees of coverage with overlap. Unlike the mass
cannons, however, the lasers are mounted such that not all weapons can be trained
on a single target at a time.

Along with the primary and secondary gun batteries, the Elliot-class ships mount
two missile racks, each carrying six heavy Hellfire missiles. These provide the
destroyers with an offensive capability many times greater than their size. Used
when targets of opportunity present themselves or as a deterent against pursuit by
much larger warships, the Hellfire missile battery is capable of destroying all but
the heaviest dreadnoughts and super-carriers.

For self-defense, the Elliot-class carries an impressive array of damage control

and active defense systems. Four point defense guns provide a last ditch attack
against incoming missiles and fighter craft while a deflection inducer reduces the
ability for an enemy craft to gain an accurate fire solution. Four chaff launchers
provide additional missile defense capability. A layer of light cerametal armor
protects the hull in several vital places. In the event that the ships do receive
damage, repair bots and damage control repair stations throughout the ship are
standing by to prevent the spread of damage.

Designed to operate as part of a squadron or battle group of ships, the Elliots

sacrifice sensor performance and rely on data links from other ships to improve
battle space situational awareness. A CIC located in the middle of ship processes
data from the many data links and organic sensor systems and provides for primary
control of all the ship's weaponry. CIC also provides a secondary means of ship
control in case the bridge, located on the 06 Level, is damaged or destroyed. The
bridge, the primary ship control station, also provides redundant functions to the
CIC. Carrying an advanced communications suite of laser, radio, and mass
transceivers, the Elliots are able to maintain the comms necessary to operate as a
part of a larger fleet formation.

The ship is powered by two mass reactors, each providing electrical power via a
zonal electrical distribution system. Standard propulsion is provided by four
powerful induction engines located in two separate engine rooms. A stardrive
powered by the mass reactors is capable of 16.4 lighyear starfalls. The ship's are
capable of atmospheric operations and with all four induction engines online, the
ships can reach a theoretical air speed of 1200 kph.

The Elliots carry three launches for various uses. In their standard
configuration, the launches can be used as liberty boats or even life boats in an
emergency. During transits in foreign space ways or when docked at foreign ports,
the launches can remove the seating deck and install two point defense guns for use
as picket boats. While not designed for this function, the launches can be used as
point defense pickets, effectively increasing the destroyers number of point
defense guns by six. In this role, however, the launches perform very poorly as
they are not equipped with a powerful sensor system, nor do they normally carry
sophisticated comms gear for use in a tactical data link.

Designer's Notes
The Elliot-class destroyer was designed utilizing Apoc527's Star*Drive Warships
Design Sheet and, therefore, does not follow Warship's canon. Apoc's system was
chosen as it provides a set of construction rules that more closely aligns with my
beliefs regarding ship construction. It also provides for several systems
originally found in the GMG/Starships ruleset that never were translated into
Warships systems. In addition to legacy systems from the GMG/Starships ruleset,
Apoc's design sheet also includes more and updated weapons choices, different
grades of system performance (ordinary, good, amazing), and a focus on PL7
technology to better fit the feel of the Star*Drive universe.

The design of the Elliot-class destroyers is inspired by the Fletcher-class

destroyers that served with distinction in the US Navy during World War II. These
steam driven “tin-cans” were intended as fleet escorts, protecting the larger air
craft carriers and battleships from small attack craft (i.e., torpedo boats),
aircraft, and submarines. To this end, the Fletcher-class of ships had an array of
weaponry to include five 5”/38 caliber guns mounted in five single gun turrets,
several 40mm and 20mm anti-aircraft guns, K-guns, and depth charges. The Fletcher-
class of ships also carried ten torpedo tubes arranged in two groups of five. Some
other statistics about the Fletcher-class is they were 376.5 feet (114.8 meters)
long and displaced 2500 Long Tons full load. They had a beam of 39.5 feet (12.0
meters) and a draft of 12.5 feet (3.8 meters). The ship had 4 boilers that drove 2
steam turbines and 2 shafts for a total of 60,000 shaft horse power and could
propel the ship at 36.5 knots (all statistics are from the article Fletcher class
destroyers at Wikipedia.com).

Included are some explanations for the ship statistics presented at the beginning
of the article. The length of the Elliot-class is measured from the very front of
the bow to the stern. Beam is the measure of the widest portion of the ship,
including the “wingspan.” Draft is the full height of the ship. This is different
in that modern wet navies measure draft from the waterline to the lowest point on
the hull. This describes the depth of water that is necessary to keep the ship
afloat and not run aground. Another measure, the air draft, is a measure of the
ship's height from waterline to the tallest point on the mast. Not normally
provided in a ship's statistics, this is usually important when the ship will be
traveling under a bridge and it is necessary to calculate if there is enough
clearance for the mast. Due to the nature of spaceships, I have included the
entire height of the ship as the draft measurement.

I've also included two new arcs in my designs. The zero forward and zero aft arcs
work much the same as the zero port and zero starboard arcs from the Warships
ruleset, just rotated ninety degrees. It didn't make sense to me that a zero
forward and zero aft arc could not exist when a zero port and zero starboard did,
so I added them. Also, I allow one of the zero arcs as a free arc to any weapon to
which it applies (beam or projectile weapons of small or light firepower). This is
based on the rule that allows standard mounts to fire in the zero arc plus one
other firing arc, effectively granting it a free arc of coverage (the zero arc).
