SOLUTIONS:
 Let the blue circle be the total number of students who took Spanish Class, the
green circle for the students who took Mandarin Class, and the violet circle for
the students who took Nihongo Class.
 The last statement of the problem states that 4 students took all three subjects.
The number represents the intersection of the circles.
 There are 10 students took both Nihongo and Spanish, thus 10 – 4 = 6. That
number represents the intersection between the circles of Nihongo and Spanish.
 Uniformly, there are 6 students who took both Mandarin and Nihongo, hence
6 – 4 = 2. That number represents the intersection between the circles of
Mandarin and Nihongo.
 Similarly, there are 9 students who took Mandarin and Spanish, therefore
9 – 4 = 5. That number represents the intersection between the circles of
Mandarin and Spanish.
 Accordingly, the number of students who took only Spanish class is:
Spanish Only = 28 – (5 + 4 + 6)
Spanish Only = 28 – 15
Spanish Only = 13
 Thus, the number of students who took only Mandarin class is:
Mandarin Only = 31 – (5 + 4 + 2)
Mandarin Only = 31 – 11
Mandarin Only = 20
 Therefore, the number of students who took only Nihongo class is:
Nihongo Only = 42 – (4 + 6 + 2)
Nihongo Only = 42 – 12
Nihongo Only = 30
 Moreover, the number of students enrolled in either Mandarin, Spanish, or
Nihongo is:
4 + 6 + 2 + 5 + 13 + 20 + 30 = 80
 Finally, the students who took neither of the three subjects is:
100 – 80 = 20
