Mark is about to finish his degree. Master of Arts in Education (English) in a prestigious
University in Iloilo. His final practicum is to spearhead a month-long enrichment language course among
junior high school students who came from different places in Western Visayas but their families are
brought to live together in a particular community in Panay because of political dilemmas in their
respective localities. Having come from various societal and cultural backgrounds, including language,
and due to other ineluctable factors, the achievement of the students in English is below par.
1. What do you think are the items of the English language that Mark should prioritize in conducting the
enrichment course to improve the students’ achievement in English? Reify your points.
2. Among the approaches/methods that you have learned (from our Sociolinguistics and/or Contrastive
Analysis course), which do you think is a good fit in carrying out the language items you identified in
item number 1? Support your answer.
3. One of the starting points in conducting language courses is to come up with a well-planned program
of activities. Using the template provided herein. Design a language program befitting to present you
inputs in items 1 and 2.
I. Rationale: This three-week program helps prepare high achieving high school student for success by
allowing them to experience college-level academics. Students able to immerse themselves in study of a
particular academic subject taught by graduate students and/or renowned faculty researchers within
the field of study.
Providing both fun and interactive setting, along with the state-of-the-art facilities.
Offer students an opportunity to learn games strategies and skills from quality players and top coaches-
athletics
Gain a fuller understanding of a child’s background and home life. It can help teachers
understand challenges students are facing outside of the classroom that can be affecting their learning.
Can give students opportunities to explore, develop fields of interest and delve into different
cultures and languages.
II. Program Design and Matrix
Campers stay in university housing and enjoy a variety of recreational activities outside of classes and
workshops, such as movie night, games and social gatherings.
Participants select one writing genre an spend their two weeks attending a small workshop dedicated to
that genre, with opportunities for one-on-one contact with workshop leaders.
