TRENDS AND ISSUES IN EDUCATION

Name: CHARMANE JOY M. VINOYA

Subject: EDUC215-Trends and Issues in Education
Course: MaED – GenEd
Professor: Estrella Apollo
School Year: First-Trimester 2022-2023

1. Discuss the political, economic and social relationship of the following to

education:
a. Trends
b. issues, and
c. challenges

a. TRENDS
The latest educational trends must be understood by both teachers
and students. It is important to stay updated with the different events in
order for us to decide what are the strategies or methods to be use in
teaching students especially this period of new normal. Whether it is
political, economic or social trends we must stay updated because it can
be used to deliver the lesson to the students. Trends can shift quickly as
well, so it is important for every educator to know the latest information
and adapt their methods and teaching methods to the needs of the
learners. As educational trends change rapidly, we must adapt along with
them because it is the only way to stay informed about the latest
development in the field of knowledge.

b. ISSUES
Across the years our educational system has been rocked by
controversies. Amidst the welter of issues, two of them have managed to
stand out in importance: quality and relevance. The major difficulty in
education in the Philippines is the short-sighted policy of sacrificing the
quality and quantity of education for reasons of economy. Also, the
education system is currently beset by several political challenges,
ranging from government funding shortages to disciplinary policy changes.
A majority of people agree that issuing top-quality education is a crucial
ideal for the citizens at large.

c. CHALLENGES
The Covid-19 pandemic emergence has placed a significant load
on the school sector. A tremendous disturbance in the educational system
caused by this has an impact on billions of students. The instantaneous
switching of the various modes of learning has a significant impact on
teachers, students and even parents. This epidemic caused several
issues for all of us. Students who find it difficult too participate in an online
class are left behind due to a lack of an internet connection. Despite their
lack of digital literacy, teachers were also required to embrace it. Financial
support for the learners is difficult for their parents. Despite all of these
challenges, education sector is trying to address all the trials or challenges
in able for us to give quality education to every learner.

2. Discuss 5 of the latest trends of education and their effects to our present
education system.

Online Learning
Kicking off the popular trends in education list today is online
learning. Due to Covid-19 effects, over 1.2 billion children are out of
school, globally. The lockdown status occurred and extended in nearly
almost the entire map. During the tough time, it is not possible for teachers
and learners to attend face-to-face classes. Many traditional classes
transform into online classes. And online learning seems to be the most
productive way to remain and ensure educational quality.
Distance Learning
Among many global educational trends, distance learning cannot
be missed out. At first glance, some people may think that distance
learning is similar to online learning. However, these modern trends are
not exactly the same. Each trend has its own specialist. With remote
learning, learners can get a course in the absence of in-person
interactions. This proves that education can be carried on from distances,
no matter where we are.

Blended Learning
Since the growth of technology, blended learning is never out of the
popular educational trends list. With this method, you can make use of
both face-to-face and eLearning training methods. Thanks to that, learners
become the center of learning. Meanwhile, teachers play the role of
mentors to orient learners. This modern trend not only boosts learners’
learning experiences but also wakes their learning motivation up.

Homeschooling
Have you ever heard about homeschooling? Yes, it tends to
become one of the popular trends in recent years. Generally,
homeschooling means home education. In other words, parents educate
their children at home rather than sending them to a public or private
school. In this education style, parents now also become teachers. They
can create unique curricula as well as suitable methods for their children.

Mobile Learning (m-Learning)

Mobile devices now are essential parts of our day-to-day lives,
obviously. We could not agree more that mobile devices such as
smartphones, tablets, laptops, etc, benefit us a lot. In many ways, m-
learning can simplify our lives. Hence, m-learning is an ideal way to help
people keep up with the ever-changing world. That’s why it always has a
good position at the top trends in education.

3. What are the top 5 most pressing issues in education brought by the pandemic
and the present curriculum?

 Overworked and underpaid teaching staff

Teaching has often been referred to as the “most notable of all
professions.” To many teachers, however, the noble image of their
profession has been transformed into an illusion. Over the last three
decades, we have come to think of the Filipino teachers as overworked
and underpaid professionals. The fact that teachers are paid subsistence
wages is only half of their sad story. Their daily bout with dilapidated
classrooms, overcrowded classes, and lack of teaching materials, among
others, make the teachers hardly rewarded work even more difficult. Aside
from classroom instructions, teachers perform a host of backbreaking and
time-consuming jobs unrelated to the teaching function.

 Bilingual policy and the problem of a national language

The bilingual policy in education aims to develop a Filipino who is
proficient in both English and Filipino. For the past 20 years, since the
DECS adopted the bilingual policy, Tagalog-based Pilipino has been used
to teach over half of the subjects in the elementary and secondary
curriculum of both public and private schools. Mathematics and the natural
sciences continue to be taught in English. Despite the findings of the
Ateneo Social Weather Survey that 92% of Filipinos already speak and
understand Tagalog, many provinces north and south of Metro Manila still
encounter problems with the language. This is unfortunate because
Pilipino is used in nationally conducted exams and tests. While the
bilingual policy is a law which not even the Secretary of Education can
change, it has become a growing concern that many students are deficient
in communication skills.

 Out of school youth

The growing rate of OSY becomes daunting due to the adverse
effects of COVID-19.

 Extra-Curricular Activities

To address learning gaps caused by the pandemic, the Department

of Education (DepEd) intends to ban extracurricular activities for school
year 2022-2023. During the opening of classes last August, Vice President
and DepEd Secretary Sara Duterte announced that traditional school
activities would not push through this school year, telling teachers to focus
on academics instead.

 Wearing of School Uniforms

Vice President and Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary
Sara Duterte said that learners are not required to wear uniforms. Duterte
said that making uniforms non-mandatory is meant to ease the financial
burden on students’ families impacted by “increasing prices and economic
losses” due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

4. As a teacher, what challenges and opportunities in our educational system do

you encounter brought about by technology, teaching modality, etc.?

Recent technological innovations have created many new

opportunities to better serve the students and also the teachers. The
evolution of touch-screen technology has enabled very young children to
engage in technology-aided instruction. Prior to tablets, it was difficult for
pre-school, kindergarten and even early primary grade students to work
with educational software because it required use of a mouse or keyboard.
Now there are a hundred of applications that can effectively expose
children to early literacy and numeracy skills. The advances in artificial
intelligence technology now allow teachers to differentiate instruction,
providing extra support and developmentally-appropriate material to
students whose knowledge and skill is far below or above grade level
norms. These technologies could enable teachers to better reach students
who are further from the average within their classroom, potentially
benefiting students with weaker academic preparation. And these
technologies scale easily so that innovations can reach more students.
Much like a well-written textbook, a well-designed educational software
application or online lesson can reach students not just in a single
classroom or school, but across the state or country.

5. Discuss the different educational reforms that are offered by the government
under the leadership of VP Sarah Duterte.

 Excellence of Teacher Education Act

Seeks to strengthen the quality of teacher education in the country

from pre-service to in-service by revamping the Teacher Education
Council (TEC). It was designed to strengthen teaching education in the
country through designing collaborative programs or projects that will
enhance pre- and in-service teacher training, retraining, orientation, and
teacher development

 ROTC

Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte said that it

was better to implement the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC)
program in higher education. Initial meetings on the proposed return of
mandatory ROTC have started among the Department of Education,
Commission on Higher Education, and some lawmakers.
