PNS ON WATER QUALITY

The Department of Trade and Industry’s Bureau of Philippine Standards (DTI-BPS) informs
concerned sectors that the following international standards have been promulgated as Philippine
National Standards (PNS):

PNS ISO 10304-1:2022 – Water quality — Determination of dissolved anions by liquid

chromatography of ions — Part 1: Determination of bromide, chloride, fluoride, nitrate,
nitrite, phosphate and sulfate (ISO published 2007)

PNS ISO 15681-1:2022 – Water quality — Determination of orthophosphate and total

phosphorus contents by flow analysis (FIA and CFA) — Part 1: Method by flow injection
analysis (FIA) (ISO published 2003)

PNS ISO 15681-2:2022 – Water quality — Determination of orthophosphate and total

phosphorus contents by flow analysis (FIA and CFA) — Part 2: Method by continuous flow
analysis (CFA) (ISO published 2018)

PNS ISO 15923-1:2022 – Water quality — Determination of selected parameters by

discrete analysis systems — Part 1: Ammonium, nitrate, nitrite, chloride, orthophosphate,
sulfate and silicate with photometric detection (ISO published 2013)

PNS ISO/TS 15923-2:2022 – Water quality — Determination of selected parameters by

discrete analysis systems — Part 2: Chromium(VI), fluoride, total alkalinity, total hardness,
calcium, magnesium, iron, iron(II), manganese and aluminium with photometric detection
(ISO published 2017)

PNS ISO 22743:2022 – Water quality — Determination of sulfates — Method by continuous

flow analysis (CFA) (ISO published 2006 w/ Cor. 1:2007)

These standards present different methods of determination of specific types of substances in water
samples to determine water quality. The characteristics of the methods vary in terms of availability,
analysis of multiple samples, volumes of samples required, analysis frequency, etc.

When implemented, these standards will contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development
Goal (UNSDG) on Clean Water and Sanitation:

The DTI-BPS is the National Standards Body authorized to promulgate PNS. Conformance to PNS
requirements is voluntary and may be used as reference by any interested parties unless a
regulatory authority uses the PNS as reference in the technical regulation for a specific product or
service where conformance to PNS or parts thereof becomes mandatory.

Copies of the said standards may be secured for a minimal fee from the DTI-BPS Standards Data
