Water Quality Management

What is a watershed?
A watershed is the land area that
drains into a stream; the
watershed for a major river can
encompass smaller watersheds
that ultimately combine at a
common point. A watershed
includes all surface water and
groundwater, soils, vegetation
and animals, and human
activities contained within its
area.
Urbanization
-according to PSA Baguio City was recorded to
have population growth rate of 1.54 from 2010-2015
and 2.36 from 2000 to 2010

Geographic location
-Philippines is a tropical country
that experiences an average of 21
typhoons per year

What is Watershed Management

Approach?
 Watershed Management is a holistic approach to
managing water resources for quantity and quality within
a watershed. Watershed management is also a useful,
proactive approach in areas without immediate
problems. The figure below demonstrates the Watershed
Approach to Water Quality Management. By looking at
watersheds, the state can evaluate all the sources of
pollution that may be affecting the water quality and
quantity.

 TheWatershed Approach is an
ongoing cycle of tasks: setting
standards for surface water quality;
taking measurements of the
conditions; assessing the data and
identifying the impairments including
establishing priorities; verifying the
pollution sources and developing
plans for restoring water quality; and
implementing pollution source
controls. Pollution source controls
can be things such as permits, rules,
and nonpoint source management
practices.

 The Philippines boasts of many
different kinds of natural water
forms, such as bays, rivers, lakes,
falls, gulfs, straits, and swamps.
 Because it is made up of islands,
the country's coastline (seashore) if
laid end-to-end, would measure
around 17.5 thousand kilometers.
WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING
Watershed
an area of land on a slope which
drains its water into a stream and
its tributaries (small streams that
supply water to a main stream).
This is the reason why a watershed
is sometimes called a catchment
area or drainage basin.

Problems/Issues Regarding Watershed Management
Watershed Urbanization
- Urbanization (or development) has a great effect on local water resources. It changes how
water flows in the watershed and what flows in the water. Both surface and groundwater are
changed.
Erosion
- Erosion problems can stem from changing land use conditions that increase the quantity and
velocity of stormwater runoff. Stream channels react to these changes by widening and
deepening, which can cause creek bank failures, threaten creekside structures, and degrade
water quality
Water Quality
- Water quality problems are multifaceted and complex to study and control. Key concerns
include increases in runoff and degradation of aquatic and riparian habitat.
Flooding
- Flood problems are caused by many different factors. Hydrologic and hydraulic modeling
helps analyze effects of land cover, floodplain geometry, and rainfall intensity.
