INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Education is very important to all students because it helps people

become better citizens, get a better-paid job, and shows the difference

between good and bad. Education shows us the importance of hard work

and, at the same time, helps us grow and develop. Thus, we are able to

shape a better society to live in by knowing and respecting rights, laws,

and regulations. Before the pandemic, students are able to access

education easily by going to school and learn. However, due to the Covid-

19 outbreak, students are unable to go to school. The COVID-19 has

resulted in schools shut all across the world. They rely on online classes

and modular methods to learn. Students are able to cope up this

pandemic by the help of the internet thanks to the development of today’s


technology. Struggling in home education has been experiencing not only

to students but also to their parents' productivity (Burges and Sievertsen,

2020). Not all student still depends on their parents, some of them have

different way on how to get money to attend online classes for the data or

Wi-Fi load. Because of this pandemic many of the parents loses their job

so some of the student needs to help them to sustain their needs. As a

result, education has changed dramatically, with the distinctive rise of e-

learning, whereby teaching is undertaken remotely and on digital platforms

(Burges and Sievertsen, 2020). However, some students are struggling to

keep up with their studies since they are struggling to find strong signals or

they don’t have any source of internet at all. As a result, they were late on

passing their activities, they can hardly send their activities via online, and

they can’t understand the lessons on the modules since there are no

teachers to enlighten them. These factors contribute to the students’


mental health, causing them to experience stress and even depression

(Misra and Castillo, 2004, p. 133). In this kind of situation, strategic

management plan is needed to be acquired by the people. The Institution

of Education are making a strategic plan to motivate every student to

pursue their studies, encourage in engaging and interact in online classes

as the substitution of the. Benguet State University also applies online

learning wherein the pandemic leads the university to explore and

implement innovative learning modalities to produce flexible knowledge

and teaching strategies. The administration issued a memorandum for the

Teachers members to use alternative learning modes wherein they can

still keep on touch to their students through texts, calls, Facebook, email,

and other social media platforms which is same with the students to them.

The university also conducts interviews and meetings to strengthen

effective online learning strategies for students and teachers (BSU, 2021).
In 2020, Benguet State University conducted a survey of BSU Teachers

members on their technological capacities, willingness, and other possible

preparation in the new learning system. In the survey it stated that 95% of

the faculties have laptops and desktops, and 46.9% have a good internet

signal, but 64.9% do not have any experience with blended learning

wherein they figured out that students in the university have a different

story upon technological capability and other issues of concern (BSU,

2020). There are also numerous concerns to both students and teachers

that challenges them on management or leadership to support this online

learning such as signal connection difficulties, availability of educational

materials, finances, geographic locations of students in accessing learning

materials and school, and environment disturbances during online classes.

These lead to poor learning, accessibility, and participation among


students, and so with the teachers which cannot perform well for the

students (Kintu et al., 2017).

Good governance in education systems promotes effective delivery


of education services which includes appropriate standards, incentives,
information, and accountability, which induce high performance from
public providers (SSRN Electronic

Journal,2009). In this study, good governance refers to collects


information’s and processes used by an institution to provide strategic
guidance and ensure that educational goals are met through effective and
efficient resource allocation, transparency, and public engagement in
decision-making. This means school governance is responsible for school
effectiveness, quality, and accountability (Kadir, 2019)
Nowadays Online learning is very important not only to protect the
health but also to keep in touch to the lessons that will lead us to achieve
our goals in life. It helps the learner to learn at their own pace, according
to their own convenience. We all know that everything we learned inside
the school could be carry as we find the suited job for ours. As pandemic
hit around the world many students missed everything they do specially
going to the school. Through online learning, it brought back the joy in
learning through its innovative and interactive content delivery and has
proved to be more appealing among students. According to Robin Mason
(1998) of the United Kingdom Open University there are two types of
online course, which are:
a.) Partially online course which uses the material resources that are
available either in print or non-print form such as the lessons textbooks
etc. with some elements of online learning. This might include the use of a
learning management system or Recorded lectures or demonstrations
(Naidu & Oliver,1999) b.) Fully Online Course which most of its learning
and teaching activities carried out online. Covid-19 has made an impact
on the education for the youths.

Transferring from face to face, a method they were used to, to


online learning has been the biggest challenge this year. They are now
keeping up with all my work for all classes. The biggest change is
becoming less focused with their school work. It is because they lack
motivation and energy to do them. There are many advantages of Covid
19 that are experienced today but despite this there are still difficulties in
their studies because they do not understand the modules that are passed
by the teachers because it is not discussed properly. Even though this is
what is happening to us today, CPAG teachers are still trying to share the
lessons with their students properly, they use PowerPoint, and record
discussions for the students who were not able to join the Google meets
and other teachers they adjust so that their students can submit their
activities and finish their studies

The reason for the researchers on conducting of this research are


the following reasons. a) Recently, Limited Face to Face classes have
been already approved and being implemented by the whole of Benguet
State University on all of its colleges. b) Some students are still having
problems, struggles, and challenges in the transition from the online to
face to face classes.
The researchers want to address this research to the students,
teachers, and higher authorities to know the story and experiences of the
students and other concerning people in this research.
In this study, the researchers are going to find out how students in BSU La
Trinidad cope up with the stress and challenges provided by the pandemic
and as well in transitioning from online class to face to face class. To
support the researchers will look on the coping mechanisms of BSU
students. This is to help out the students in their learning approaches. It is
a way for students and a reference for the whole Benguet to look into the
effectiveness of the strategies, techniques, methods, and management of
their online classes and help them switch to other methods if needed.
Furthermore, this could serve as the guidelines of any universities or
individuals for information’s, create, improve, and implement such policies.
Conceptual Framework

The study employed the input-process-output model which illustrate the


structure of the information processing. Inputs show the different internal
and external factors that the said transitioning from online to face to face
class affect the students and Teachers members of BSU who are
currently facing the situation. The information was gathered through a
survey and web-based interview. The people’s perspective and the factors
affecting on the different coping transition output of the study. This study
focuses on coping mechanisms of students and teachers of Benguet State
University. This research based on the theory on good governance.

Theory of Good Governance

Good Governance is an approach to government that is


committed in creating a system founded by justice and peace that protects
everybody’s human rights and civil liberties. Governance purpose is to
guide and regulate citizens’ activities through the power of different
systems and relations so as to maximize the public interest. In terms of
political science, governance refers to the process of political
administration, including the normative foundation of political authority,
approaches to dealing with political affairs and the management of public
resources (Keping 2017). Good quality of services is also one of the
factors that make governance effective and efficiency. The kind of service
that every Universities applied to their clients most specially to the
students that are enrolled to them is to satisfy and fulfil their needs in
learning. A good governance is being observe in any government, to their
administrators, educators and other private agencies which provide quality
service. The strategy that have been used by an educator on every
lessons towards their students is one of the example of aiming a good
governance. Policymakers and scholars wherein their ability to
systematically design education governance arrangements is what
translates to better education outcomes (King and Ozler 2005). A strong
governance leader gives employees a sense of career satisfaction,
creates a strong connection with the organization, and builds trusts
between them and their superiors (Price 2019). Despite of the pandemic,
Covid -19, teachers or educators are flexible to provide their students
education. The coping mechanisms strategies are expected to be
persistently developed in teaching by the educators to achieved good
governance in education.

Online Learning in Pandemic

Developed Technologies have made distance education easy


(McBrien et al., 2009) Online learning or hybrid learning is define as a
teaching method which uses technology and digital media wherein it uses
before in face to face classes. Philippines also uses online learning since
school year 2020, when the virus spreads rapidly all over the country.
Republic Act No. 11469 also known as Bayanihan to Heal as One Act was
enacted in September 2020 granting the President additional authority to
combat the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines, wherein there is a
limitation on every movement of the people. Thus, the establishments
such as restaurants, schools, and other that usually has crowded people
are temporarily forced to stop from operations as to abide the health
protocols mandated by the government. Online learning is defined as a
tool that can make the teaching–learning process more student-centered,
more innovative, and even more flexible which uses different devices such
as mobile phones, laptops, computer, and etc. with internet access.
Amidst this deadly virus spread such online platforms are needed where
(a) video conferencing with selected number of students, (b) discussions
with students can be done to keep classes organic, (c) internet
connections are important, (d) lectures are accessible in mobile phones
also and not just laptops, (e) possibility of watching already recorded
lectures, and (f) instant feedback from students can be achieved and
assignments can be taken (Basilaia et al., 2020).

Most of the countries have been affected of the pandemic, Covid-19


wherein quarantine was applied in order to control its spread to the people
and its effect is seen to schools, colleges and universities. Online teaching
modes can sermonize a large number of students at any time and in any
part of the world. During this tough time, the concern is not about whether
online teaching–learning methods can provide quality education, it is
rather how academic institutions will be able to adopt online learning in
such a massive manner (Carey, 2020) Every students or learner can still
continue to learn and achieve their goals in life. We began to witness
schools, teachers, and students increasingly adopt e-learning
technologies that allow teachers to deliver instruction interactively, share
resources seamlessly, and facilitate student collaboration and interaction
(Elaish et al., 2019; Garcia et al., 2018)
COPING MECHANISMS OF STUDENTS IN THE TRANSITION OF FACE
TO FACE CLASS

Many students may be happy to reconnect and have a lot of time


spending with family again during the pandemic and the online class.
some have returned to abusive households, others to an empty fridge,
and others to no home at all. Every student, their greatest challenge is
being linked to their learning environment at home, and now some student
takes this chance as a blessing in disguise and some take this as a great
challenge in transitioning online class to face to face classes again. While
others have their challenge in technological literacy and competency it is a
good thing for them that the face to face classes will resume. Students
faced challenges during their online classes include anxiety, depression,
poor Internet service, and unfavorable home learning environment, which
were aggravated when students are marginalized and from remote areas.
While for others, staying at home of students during the pandemic had
significant positive effects on their performance. They attributed these
results to students’ continuous use of learning strategies which, in turn,
improved their learning efficiency (Gonzales et al.2020) . there are also
Students appreciated the use of online learning during the pandemic
(Singh et al.2020). However, it is far good enough to be traditional
classroom setting specially in college. There are five general clusters that
challenges every student the most, namely self-regulation (SRC) that
control over their emotions, actions, and thoughts to achieve learning
objectives, technological literacy and competency (TLCC) ability to
effectively use technology for learning purposes (SIC)it is an emotion
feeling that made them sad as they think they used to do before,
technological sufficiency (TSC) the availability of technologies that every
student will rely as the school year end, student isolation, and
technological complexity (TCC) challenges (Rasheed et al., 2020, p. 5).
Good time management skills have been identified as having a “buffering”
effect on stress (Misra & McKean, 2000) and are a key indication of higher
performance and lower stress and anxiety in higher education (Kearns &
Gardiner, 2007). However some of the students find it more difficult to
adjust their time in their studies and their external lives (Van der Meer,
Jansen, & Torenbeek, 2010)

PREPARATION AND ADJUSTMENTS OF TEACHER IN THE


TRANSITION OF FACE TO FACE CLASS

Teachers, who were used to conventional teaching delivery, were


also obliged to

embrace technology despite their lack of technological literacy. Online


learning is the new normal for every one during the pandemic. There are
a lot of ways of educators on how they will deliver every lessons that
students must absorb. As school year started and even before it started
they already made a lesson plans on giving every details and strategies
needed for the sake of their student’s future.

On an article in the internet there are ways on teachers must to in


order to be connected to their students virtually: 1.) Know the technology,
2.) Expect the unexpected and remain flexible, 3.) Create and maintain a
strong presence, 4.) Set clear expectations to the course, 5.) Establish a
sense of comfort and develop a community of learners, 6.) Promote
reflection and communication through quality asynchronous discussion,
7.) Have a good balance of active leader and active observer, 8.) Request
regular feedback and be mindful of misinterpretation, 9.) Regularly check
content resources and applications, (Pearson, 2020). Knowing the ways
on how online learning help students begin to understand the process of
learning

ALERT LEVEL GUIDELINES IN THE PROVINCE OF BENGUET

Section 2 of Executive Order No. (E.O.) 112, (s. 2020) provides that
provincial governors shall be authorized to impose, lift or give guidelines in
the Quarantine in component cities and municipalities upon the
concurrence of the relevant regional counterpart body of the Inter-Agency
Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF);
and, that the mayors of cities and municipalities are likewise authorized to
impose, lift or extend and implement different rules in barangays, upon the
concurrence of the relevant regional counterpart body of the IATF;
provided, that this is without prejudice to the authority of the IATF to
directly impose.

COVID-19 Alert Level System - refers to the new Community Quarantine


Classifications for dealing with COVID-19 covering entire cities,
municipalities and/or regions; aimed to manage and minimize the risk of
the disease through System Indicators, Triggers and Thresholds
determined by the IATF to specify the public health and social measures
to be taken in relation to the COVID-19 response, as may be updated
based on new scientific knowledge, information about the effectiveness of
control measures in the country and overseas, and its application. a. Alert
Level 1 - refers to areas wherein case transmission is low and decreasing,
total bed utilization rate, and intensive care unit utilization rate is low. b.
Alert Level 2 - refers to areas wherein case transmission is low and
decreasing, healthcare utilization is low, or case counts are low but
increasing, or case counts are low and decreasing but total bed utilization
rate and intensive care unit utilization rate is increasing. c. Alert Level 3 -
refers to areas wherein case counts are high and/or increasing, with total
bed utilization rate and intensive care unit utilization rate at increasing
utilization. d. Alert Level 4 - refers to areas wherein case counts are high
and/or increasing, with total bed utilization rate and intensive care unit
utilization rate at high utilization. e. Alert Level 5 - refers to areas wherein
case counts are alarming, with total bed utilization rate and intensive care
unit utilization rate at critical utilization.

SUPPLEMENTAL GUIDELINES TO CHED-DOH JOINT MEMORANDUM


CIRCULAR ON THE ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES FOR THE
OPERATIONS OF LIMITED FACE-TO-FACE CLASSES OF HIGHER
EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS (HEIS) IN AREAS UNDER ALERT LEVEL 1

GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR THE IMPLEMENTATIONS OF FACE TO


FACE:
1. Flexible Learning: Flexible learning is defined as face to face learning,
online learning, offline learning, or any combination of these three learning
modalities . it is in the discretion of the HEI’s on choosing which learning
combinations they operationalize as long it will be continuity of learning
under any flexible learning modality of subject to the condition that the
HEI’s will require.

However HEI’s is reminded that the student admission should be based


on teachers student ratio and capacity regular classes sizes, and holding
on seating capacities of facilities and venues

2. Minimum Public health standards:

2.1 Classroom capacity :

The Allowable seating capacity in classrooms of HEI’s in the area under


alert 1 is it in maximum 100% capacity. The HEI may however decide on a
reduced capacity based on its capability to comply with the minimum
health and safety protocols.

2.2 Physical Distance in HEI’s

There is no restriction as to the physical distance among students and


teaching and non-teaching personnel attending limited face to face
classes. HEI’s may however provide physical distancing protocols they
deem appropriate.
Definition of Terms:

1. Coping- to deal with and attempt to overcome problems and


difficulties often used with learning to cope with the demands of one’s
schedule and to maintain a contest or combat usually on even terms or
with success. To face and deal with responsibilities, problems, or
difficulties, especially successfully or in a calm or adequate manner. A
finishing or protective course or cap to an exterior masonry wall or the
like. The methods a person uses to deal with stressful situations. These
may help a person face a situation, take action, and be flexible and
persistent in solving problems. Coping is the way people manage stress
or harmful situations. There are three coping strategies which include
active-cognitive strategies, active-behavioral strategies, and avoidance
strategies. Coping is a process, requires planning and may not always
lead to a positive outcome. The three parts of stress are utilizing anxiety,
identifying internal strategies that produce either unpleasant or pleasant
response and developing strengths and resources. Most of the time I
use active-cognitive strategies but when the situations inflict an extreme
emotional response I use avoidance strategies. Knowing the way, I
handle situations help me effectively manage the. Coping with stress is
the attempt to manage or deal with stress. Successful coping involves
becoming aware of incidents and situations that one perceives as
stressful. To Anspaugh et al. (2003) dealing successfully with stress
might require using different types of techniques.

2. Mechanism- the agency or means by which an effect is produced or a


purpose is accomplished. The fundamental processes involved in or
responsible for an action, reaction, or other natural phenomenon. A
process, technique, or system for achieving a result. The agency or
means by which an effect is produced or a purpose is accomplished.
machinery or mechanical appliances in general. the structure or
arrangement of parts of a machine or similar device, or of anything
analogous. An assembly of moving parts performing a complete
functional motion, often being part of a large machine. The Greek term
mhcanh meant "machine". In Shakespeare's time the "rude
mechanical’s" were craftspeople. Mechanism was associated with
"mechanics" in the practical sense, as it is used in speaking of
"automobile mechanics". Pawson and Tilley's (1997) formulation of the
concept of a mechanism tends to focus on changes in the reasoning and
behavior of individuals. However, others have also argued for this
concept to be extended to understand how mechanisms work at
different levels within systems.

4.Face to Face (of a situation) characterized by having those involved


close together and facing each other. An interaction that takes place in
person, as opposed to over the phone or online, as in Instead of
emailing back and forth. A meeting that you have with someone in which
you talk to them directly, not by phone, email, online, etc. Within each
other's sight or presence met and talked face-to-face a face-to-face
consultation. In or into direct contact or confrontation came face-to-face
with the problem.

PARADIGM OF THE STUDY


STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The study aimed to determine The Coping Mechanism of BSU Students on


the Transition from Online Class to face to face class. Specifically, it seeks
to provide answers to the following questions:

1. What are the factors affecting the students behaviors in their


transition from distance learning into new normal face to face class

2. What are the challenges of students in there transition to new


normal face to face classes

3. What are the strategies and its effect on impact of students behavior
towards transition into new normal face to face classes
METHODOLOGY

The Research design, population and locale of the proposal, the

data collection instruments, data collection procedure, treatment of data,

and statistical tool used in analyzing the data in the study are presented in

this section.

Research Design

This study focuses on “The coping mechanism of BSU students on

the transition from online class to face to face class”. The research will use

the qualitative method in this study. Qualitative research involves collecting

and analyzing non-numerical data (e.g., text, video, or audio) to

understand concepts, opinions, or experiences. It can generate new ideas

for research. (Bhandari 2020). A qualitative “approach” is a general way

about conducting qualitative research. It describes, either explicitly or

implicitly, the purpose of the qualitative research, the role of the

researcher(s), the stages of research, and the method of data analysis. It

aims to find about providing direct access to contents of human minds and
for the development of the researchers to achieve objectives (Silverman,

2021). Therefore, the use of qualitative method is considered the most

appropriate for the study.

POPULATION AND LOCALE OF THE STUDY:

Figure 1 above shows the map of the Benguet State


University, where the College of Public Administration and Governance
is located. As of May 2018, Benguet State University is recognized by
the
Commission on Higher Education (CHED) as a Center of Excellence
(COE) for Teacher education, and Center of Development (COD) for both

Agriculture education, and Nutrition and Dietetics. Our past Dean Dr.
Felipe S. Comila who is now the President of BSU. We choose CPAG,
BSU, La Trinidad as our place of study because the location is more
accessible and easier to accommodate and also this pandemic affects
the travelling to any places. In addition, we as a CPAG student
concerned about the coping mechanisms of the student as well our
respected faculty members amidst Covid-19.
RESPONDENTS AND POPULATION OF THE STUDY

This research will use the purposive sampling techniques to


choose the respondents to participate in the study because the
participant should be reliable and capable to share the helpful
information about the topic. They must then possess the following
criteria:

A.) Must be a student/s of BSU who are currently enrolled during the
pandemic on the first semester of academic year 2020-2021.

DATA COLLECTION INSTRUMENTS

Qualitative research helps to understand the social reality of


individuals, groups and cultures as nearly as possible as its
participants feel it or live it (McLeod, 2019). It aims to explain human
experiences in accessing within human mind in order to achieve such
objectives needed. To allow researchers in understanding the
phenomenon, they used social media applications such as messenger
chats, online surveys, and also text or call.

For documentations and observation, the researchers will use

Microsoft Word and Google Forms to record the Respondent’s


answers. Using of android phones to have evidences and reference.
Upon conducting, the researchers will also use pen, note pad,
laptop, and flash drive in saving or restoring the important files.

DATA COLLECTION PROCEDURE

The researchers commenced by asking permission to our facilitator and the


College of Public Administration and Governance Dean for their approval to
conduct the study. The researchers will then start the data gathering once
approved, where the questionnaires will be sent encoded via Google
Forms which will be online surveys. Links will be posted on the Facebook
Page of the College of Public Administration and Governance, sending it
through messenger and Gmail to reach participants. The answers of the
respondents will keep by the researchers confidentially. Results will be
received online and viewed in Microsoft Excel Worksheet by the
researchers.

TREATMENT OF DATA

The collected responses of questionnaires will be analyzed using


Thematic analysis. Thematic analysis is a method of qualitative data
analysis. Qualitative research is a set of interpretive, material practices
that make the world visible to the observer. These practices turn the
world into a series of representations, including field notes, interviews,
conversations, photographs, recordings, and memos to the self. This
means that researchers study things in their natural settings, attempting
to make sense of phenomena, (Denzin and Lincoln’s, 2005, p.3). Themes
are the overarching categories of common data across multiple
participants. All textual data contained in a theme tells a story about that
theme and is somehow related, representing different dimensions of a
phenomenon. Researchers often use this to analyze interviews. Until
recently, thematic analysis (TA) was a widely used yet poorly defined
method of qualitative data analysis. TA is rapidly becoming widely
recognized as a unique and valuable method in its own right. Learning to
use TA provides the basic skills needed to engage with other
approaches, Howitt & Cramer (2008, p. 341) developed TA in relation to
psychology in a 'systematic' and 'sophisticated' way. Fereday & Muir-
Cochrane (2006, 2006; Tuckett, 2005) developed the method in a much
