#1 FLOWER OF GOLD

(Soldiers enter solemnly).

Flynn: (narrating) Hi! How you doing? This is the story of how I died (doubting). Don't worry,
this is actually a very fun story. And the truth is, it isn't even mine. This is the story of a lost
Princess, named Rapunzel and this Tiara. And it starts, right here...

Flynn:
Once a beautiful queen and noble king
Ruled a city upon a hill
They had a baby well on the way, but then one day
Her royal highness took deathly ill

And as her sickness grew graver

And nothing could save her
A sage told a legend of old

Sage: Yes!

Flynn: The flower of gold

King Frederic: What's that?

Sage: Only a story sire, a myth! But maybe...

King Frederic: Tell me!

Sage:
When the world was begun, a drop of sun
Fell to earth and became a flower
Instead of giving off a perfume, its golden bloom
Glows with magical healing powers

King Frederic: Men, gather round!

Flynn: The king demanded his guard

King Frederic:
Find it now! No holds barred!
And the queen's final death bell has tolled

Guards: Yes, sire!

Flynn:
Now the tale was true
For indeed it grew
Hidden by a twisted old crone
Who for centuries alone
Kept the secret of what it could do

Mother Gothel:
Flower, gleam and glow
Let your power shine
Make the clock reverse
Bring back what once was mine
What once was mine

Guards: Look, there it is!

Flynn:
Up they shoveled it, and with flower in hand
Back they rode to the desperate king

Sage:
The sage has brewed the leaves in a tea and instantly
Cured her highness of everything

Flynn:
And on that very same morn
A sweet princess was born

Midwife: And her hair was a sight to behold

Flynn:
And their joy was rare
But guess who was there
Hiding in the nursery that night
To make use of the light
Shining bright in the princess's hair

But the magic left when she cut off a strand
Mother Gothel: (shouting)

So instead, the lady took matters in hand

Sage: Eighteen years have gone by. How fast they fly!

Midwife: Still the princess has not been seen

Stubborn’s brothers: Hey ridder! What’s taking you so long? Hurry it up down there! Just as
the princess’s story begins with a theft.

Flynn: So, does mine… sorry boys, i think i’ll be needing this (taking the tiara), haha… catch
you later! (The brothers yell at him trying to stop him.) But, since i’m a little busy at the
moment, now’s a great time for you to meet the princess herself… her name…. Rapunzel
(going out the scene).

 Scene 2: Interior of Tower

2# WHEN WILL MY LIFE BEGIN?

Rapunzel:
Just 24 hours till my birthday
One day till the day Im 18
A day which I guess will be spent more or less
like the other six thousand I’ve seen….
7 AM, the usual morning lineup
Start on the chores and sweep 'til the floor's all clean
Polish and wax, do laundry, and mop and shine up
Sweep again, and by then it's like 7:15!

And so I'll read a book

Or maybe two or three
I'll add a few new paintings to my gallery
I'll play guitar and knit
And cook and basically
Just wonder when will my life begin?

Rapunzel: There!!! Finished… Finally.

Then after lunch it's puzzles and darts and baking

Papier-mâché, a bit of ballet and chess
Pottery time, ventriloquy, candle making
Then I'll stretch, maybe sketch, Take a climb, sew a dress!

And I'll reread the books

If I have time to spare
I'll paint the walls some more
I'm sure there's room somewhere
And then I'll brush and brush
and brush and brush my hair
Stuck in the same place I've always been

And I'll keep wonderin' and wondering

Rapunzel: (sighs) This is it. I'm finally gonna do it. I'm finally gonna ask her.

(AMBIENT MUSIC) CHROMATIC ASCENDING MAGIC (SHORT)

(She casts down her seventy feet of hair. Mother Gothel loosely ties it in a large loop and
steps in it. Rapunzel pulls her up)

Rapunzel: Hi, welcome home, mother.

Mother Gothel: My goodness, Rapunzel! How you manage to do that every single day
without fail, it must be absolutely exhausting.
Rapunzel: Oh, it's nothing.
Mother Gothel: Then I don't know why it takes so long. (Laughs) Oh, darling. I'm just teasing.
Rapunzel: So, mother. As you know, tomorrow is a very big day….

Mother Gothel: Rapunzel Dear! Look at that mirror. You know what I see? I see a strong,
confident, beautiful young lady. Oh look, you're here too! HAHAHAHA… I'm just teasing, stop
taking everything so seriously.

Rapunzel: So, mother. As I was saying, tomorrow is…

Mother Gothel: Rapunzel, dear mother's feeling a little run down. Would you sing to me,
dear?

Rapunzel: OH! Of course, mother. (Sings very fast) Flower gleam and glow, let your power

Mother Gothel: Rapunzel!

Rapunzel: So, mother! Tomorrow’s my birthday, 18 YEARS OLD, CRAZY, RIGHT?

(Mother Gothel looks at her as it was the least important thing in the whole world)

Rapunzel: And I wanted to ask, …what I really want for this birthday. Actually, what I’ve
wanted for...quite a few birthdays now...

Mother Gothel: Ok, Rapunzel, stop with the mumbling. Blah, blah, blah...blah. It's very
annoying. I'm just teasing, I love you so much.

Rapunzel: Oh, I wanna go see the floating lights.

Mother Gothel: What?
Rapunzel: I… I mean... I was hoping YOU would take me to see the floating… lights.

Mother Gothel:
You want to go outside? Ugh, why, Rapunzel!

much. If I leave now, I can get all the ingredients and be back in time for your big day
tomorrow.

Rapunzel: I wove you more.

Gothel: I wove you most. Ta – ta, my flower. I'll see you soon.

(She leaves climbing down her hair)

(Flynn enters and introduce himself to the audience)

Flynn: Heeeeyyy!!! You haven’t forgotten about me, have you? People rarely do but we
haven’t formally met. Let me take a moment to properly introduce myself…

Flynn:
I've swiped a dozen treasures, robbed a hundred vaults
Left a million ladies needing smelling salts
But with your stolen gold, and stolen hearts
My bad boy cred is off the charts
You see my posters around, I bet you're a fan
Flynn Rider: Wanted Man!

Sideburns: There he is!

Flynn: Uummm, moment over
Patchy: Get back here Ryyyydeeeerr!!!
Flynn: Nop!
Sideburns: We gave him our protection
Patchy: We offered him our trust
Sideburns: He ran with our tiara

Both:

And when we catch that double-crossing snake

Guard 1: We will never stop him… (crying)

Guard 2: But this time we have a secret weapon… MAXIMUS!!!

(Enters Maximus galloping)

Guard 2: Can you catch his trail?

(Maximus stars sniffing like a dog and neighs, following an invisible track)

Guard 2: This waaaayyy!!! (Shouting and following Maximus with the guards / they leave the
scenario)
(Women start shouting and crying for Flynn, several town women enter shouting and
screaming for Flynn, continuing the song)

Women: There's nobody who's bolder, nobody as fine

Flynn: There's no-one with a smolder half as good as mine

Women: You've gotta love the way his trousers fit, plus-

Flynn: Hold that thought girls... gotta split

Women: He got the gleamiest teeth, the evenest tan

Flynn: Flynn Rider...

Women: Wanted Man!

(After singing women start shouting and screaming for Flynn, once again. The leave the
stage)

Flynn: A tracking horse! Really?

Flynn: Nobody's ever caught me

Stabbington Brothers: Cause watch out when we do

Guards: We'll hang him and we'll shoot him, and guillotine him too

Women: He's like the most sought-after man alive

Stabbington Brothers: But not for long once we arrive

Guards: You're gonna pay for your crimes

Guard 2: At least that's the plan!

All: Flynn Rider: Wanted Man!

Stabbington Brothers: We'll pound his face to a pulp, as flat as a pan

All: Flynn Rider: Wanted Man!

Flynn: What is this gap in the valley? Wow, A tower!! I can see a tower!! I can hide there, till
the storm dies…. (He runs towards the tower)

All:

 Scene 4: Inside the Tower / On the Ground

Flynn: AAAAGGHH! What happened? Where am I? What the… Wha...? Is this...hair?

Rapunzel: I know what you want. And I'm not afraid of you.
Flynn: What? Is someone there?
Rapunzel: Who are you, and how did you find me?

Flynn: (Clears throat) Listen... I know not who you are. Nor how I came to find you. But may I
just say… Hey! How you doing? The name’s Flynn Ryder. How's your day going, huh?
Rapunzel: Who else knows my location, Flynn Ryder?

Flynn: Listen, Blondie.

Rapunzel: Rapunzel.
Flynn: Gesundheit. Here's the deal. I was in a situation, Gallivanting through the forest. And...
Oh, oh no, where is my satchel?

Rapunzel: I've hidden it, somewhere you'll never find it.

Flynn: It's behind your back isn't it.

(AMBIENT MUSIC) WAKING UP FROM A DREAM (SHORT)

Flynn: No! Listen, the only thing I want to do with your hair, is to get out of it. Literally!
Rapunzel: Wait, you don't want my hair?
Flynn: I was being chased, I saw your tower, I climbed it, end of story.

Rapunzel: You're, telling the truth?

Flynn: YES!
Rapunzel: Alright Flynn Ryder, I’m prepared to offer you a deal.
Rapunzel: Do you know what these are?

Flynn: You mean the lantern thing they do for the princess?

with these lanterns. You will act as my guide, take me to these lanterns, and return me home
safely.

Flynn: Yeah, no can do. See, the kingdom and I are not exactly simpatico, at the moment. So,
I won't be taking you anywhere.

Rapunzel: Then I promise you will never see your precious satchel again…And when I promise
something, I never break that promise. EVER!

Flynn: All right, fine, I didn't want to have to want to do this, but you leave me no choice. Here
comes the 'smolder' (He does the 'smolder').

(AMBIENT MUSIC) SPANISH (SHORT)

Flynn: This usually works, let me try again…

Rapunzel: AH!
Flynn: Fine, I'll take you to see the lanterns.
Rapunzel: YES!
Flynn: Just one thing…how exactly do we get down from here?
Rapunzel: How do you think?
Flynn: This day just keeps getting weirder and weirder.

Captain: There is no sign of him.

Guards: Not a single clue!
Captain: Well, he can’t just simply vanish into thin air… OOhh… Good ‘morrow my lady! Have
you by any chance seen this man?
Mother Gothel: Sorry, I can’t say that I have.
Captain: He is a notorious thief. A real lady killer, too. Young impressionable girls seem to
love him. Last seen around these parts in possession of something extremely precious to the
King and Queen.
Mother Gothel: Rapunzel…
Captain: What’s that?
Mother Gothel: Nothing… I have to get home!
Captain: Guards, this way…

(AMBIEN MUSIC) DRUNK IN A BAR

(People shouting and fighting in the dark)

Flynn: Welcome to the Snuggly Duckling, the nicest, safest tavern around. We wouldn't want
you getting scared and giving up on this whole journey, now would we…smell that take a
deep breath, what are you getting? cause to me its part man smells and the other part is
really bad man smell, your thoughts?

Thug [deep voice]: Hey! That's a lot of hair.

Flynn: She's growing it out. Is that blood in your mustache? Hey Goldie, come look at this,
look at all the blood in this man's mustache. Hey you don't look so good maybe we should
get you home, call it today after all this is a five-star joint and if you can't handle this place.

Vladimir: Hey! Is this you?

Hook Hand: That's him alright, that reward is gonna buy me a new hook.
Vladimir: What about me?!

Attila: I can use the money.

(Start fighting)

Ruffians: (laugh)
Flynn: Not getting any less wanted here.

Rapunzel: Is it safe?
Hook Hand: Oh yeah sure. Oh, as long as you don't accidentally set off the booby trap that
causes the tunnel to flood.

(Guards enter).

Guard: Where is Flynn Ryder? The trail leads here. Where is he?
Hook Hand: Uh, I´ve never seen him before.
Ruffian: Never heard of him.
Ruffian: Never set foot in this place.

Drunk Ruffian: Yeah. No way that's the guy who just went out through the secret tunnel.

Maximus: (neighs)

Guards: You there, thug you are going to lead us to him, get going!

 Scene 6: In the Cave

[In the forest]

[Brothers Stabbington and Mother Gothel enter in opposite sides]

Brother Stabbington 1: I knew we couldn't trust that backstabbing double deal and snake.

Brother Stabbington 2: Just wait till I get my hands on Flynn Ryder. I'm gonna rip him limb
from limb and squeeze what's left in the pulp and then…

Mother Gothel: Bo-oys!... I couldn't help but over here did you just mention Flynn Ryder.

Brother Stabbington 2: yeah, what of it?! (angrily)

Mother Gothel: Well, it just so happens that your friend kidnapped my little girl and left this
behind. (Show the bag that contains the crown).

Brother Stabbington 1 and 2: (Run towards Mother Gothel to try to take the bag) Hey! That
belong to us!!

Mother Gothel: Oh please! there's no need for violence of course if this crown is all you want
take it and be on your way i was going to offer you something worth 1000 crowns and that
isn't even the best part

Brother Stabbington 2: What's the best part?

Brother Stabbington 1: yeah!

9# HEALING INCANTATION

Rapunzel: Heal what has been hurt, change the fates' design…

Flynn: [gasp] Ahhh! (Very low volume)

Rapunzel: Don't freak out!

Flynn: (Stifled) Ahhh. I'm not freaking out; I'm just interested in your hair and the magical
qualities that it possesses. How long has it been doing that, exactly?

Rapunzel: Uh. Forever, I guess. Mother says when I was a baby somebody tried to cut it and
take it. But once it's cut. It turns brown, and loses its power. A gift like that, it has to be
protected. That's why Mother never let me… That's why I... I never left the...

Flynn: You never left that tower. And you're still gonna go back?

Rapunzel: No... yes. Ugh. It's complicated.

Flynn: (laughing) Well, yeah
Rapunzel: I knew you wouldn’t understand, life must be so easy for the great Flynn Ryder.

(Brief pause)

Flynn: [sigh] Eugene.

Eugene: No. He had enough money to do whatever he wanted to do. And for a kid with nothing

Rapunzel: Oh, we wouldn't want that.
Flynn: A fake reputation is all that a man has. [laugh] That’s just…
(They both stop talking while looking at each other’s eyes)

(Eugene gets up and leaves. As Rapunzel smiles to herself, Gothel stands behind her!)

Mother Gothel: Oh, it was easy really. I just listened to the sound of complete betrayal, and
followed that.

Rapunzel: No, you don't understand. I've been on this incredible journey. I've seen and done
so much. I even met someone.
Mother Gothel: Yes, the wanted thief. I'm so proud.

(Maximus interrupts the scene and bites Flynn)

Maximus: (neighs)
Rapunzel: (to Maximus) That's right, you are. Are you tired from chasing the bad man all over

Maximus: [nods no] (neighs)
Flynn: Come one, he's a bad horse.
Rapunzel: Oh, he's nothing but a big sweetheart. (To Maximus) Isn't that, right? (Reads the

Maximus: (neighs)

Maximus: [nods yes] (neighs)
Rapunzel: (to Flynn) Oh! Yeah, it is! Isn't he just so beautiful?
Rapunzel: (to Maximus) Hey Max comes here. Listen, tomorrow is kinda the biggest day of my

[At the prison]

Guard: Alright Ryder, let's get this over with.

Eugene: Get what over with?

(Act of hanging and dying)

Eugene: Ohh, that…

Guard: Any last request? (Meanwhile he puts a cloth bag on his head)
Rufián: Yeah! Can you just let him live his dream?
(They all come screaming and they grab the guards to save Eugene)

Eugene: Guys!... Guys! How did you find me?

Ugly rufián: Look! (Pointing to Max)

(Max makes horse noises looking towards Eugene happy)

(Giggles)

Flynn: Rapunzel? Rapunzel, let down your hair.

Mother Gothel: Don’t worry my flower, it will be over soon… (No response)

(AMBIENT MUSIC) MAGIC CHROMATIC ASCENDING (SHORT)

(He starts to climb the tower wall. Rapunzel's long hair falls down from above. Eugene grabs it and
climbs up the tower, then enters through the window).

Flynn: Woops! Rapunzel, I thought I'd never see you again. [pained gasp as he gets stabbed, rip]
Mother Gothel: And now you never will.

(AMBIENT MUSIC) TERRORIFIC MUSIC (SHORT)

(He sees Rapunzel bound and gagged! Mother Gothel comes up behind Eugene and stabs him
with her dagger! The wounded thief falls to the floor)

Rapunzel: [calls Eugene's name through the gag]

Mother Gothel: Now look what you've done, Rapunzel. Oh, don't worry dear. Our secret will die
with him. And as for us? We are going where no one will ever find you, again. Rapunzel, REALLY!
ENOUGH ALREADY! STOP FIGHTING ME!

Rapunzel: NO! I won't stop. For the rest of my life, I will fight. I will never stop trying to get away
from you. But if you let me save him... I will go with you.
Flynn: (Moan) No. No, Rapunzel...

Rapunzel: Just let me heal him. And you and I will be together. Forever, just like you want.
Mother Gothel: Promise… PROMISE!!
Rapunzel: I promise.

Mother Gothel: Heal him and then we are going…

Rapunzel: Eugene! Oh, I'm so sorry. The wound is so deep…

Flynn: No... I can't let you do this.
Rapunzel: And I can't let you die.

Eugene: Rapunzel, wait...

(Flynn has realized that he faces death either way; being hanged by the guards or bleeding out
with Rapunzel. He chooses to die in her arms and set her free, sacrificing his last ounce of
strength by slicing off Rapunzel's hair with a shard of the broken mirror).

(AMBIENT MUSIC) SCARY BLACK MAGIC

(Gothel’s hair turns brown instantly. As it loses its power, so does Gothel, aging rapidly)

Mother Gothel [anguished screaming]: NOOO! No...NO! What have you done?! WHAT HAVE YOU
DONE?! (She turns to the broken mirror, seeing her aged reflection) No, no, no, NOOO!

(Mother Gothel trips, falls out of the tower, and her body decays to dust. Rapunzel shooting
smokes come out of her ears but she reaches out for her, then rushes back to Flynn)

15# HEALING INCANTATION (REPRISE)

Rapunzel: No, no, no, no, Eugene.... Say with me

(She attempts to sing a song of healing)

Flower gleam and glow

Let your powers shine
Make the clock reverse
Bring back what once was mine

Eugene (weakly): Rapunzel...

Rapunzel: Eugene?
Flynn: You were my new dream…

Rapunzel: (sniff) …and you were mine.

(Eugene succumbs. to his injuries Rapunzel is deeply heartbroken...but she tries again)

Rapunzel:
Heal what has been hurt...

(She can't even sing anymore because of how heartbroken she is)

(She begins to cry, mourning over Flynn's death. One of Rapunzel's tears fall on his cheek. Then, a
sun-shaped glow shines on Eugene's cheek where the tear fell. Gold light and white light in the
shape of the flower erupt from the wound. The gold light stretches around the tower, and
Eugene's wound heals. The light recedes into Flynn. He opens his eyes)

Eugene: Rapunzel?
Rapunzel: Eugene!

Eugene: Did I ever tell you; I've got a thing for brunettes?
Rapunzel: Eugene!

(She pulls him into their first kiss)

 Scene 12: The Town

(The scene changes to the castle, where Queen Arianna is trying to comfort King Frederic.
Then, a guard throws the door open. The king and queen rush to the balcony to see Rapunzel.
They hug each other and pull in Flynn to join them)

16# FLOWER OF GOLD / WHEN WILL MY LIFE BEGAN? (REPRISE)

Maid 1: On the very next day

Man 1: Or so they say
Maid 1: A stranger came to the castle walls

Woman 3: The king and queen were summoned in haste

Man 2: And down they raced
Midwife and Maids: Hardly daring to breathe at all

Man 1: And when they saw who had come

Midwife and Maids: They both stood their stand up
Townspeople: For they knew her without being told
Flynn: And you can guess what happened next
