CREATIVE WRITING - A FORM OF WRITING THAT convey meaning through the

use of imagery, narrative, and drama

FORMS OF WRITING
1. IMAGINATIVE - PURELY FICTIONAL
2. JOURNALISTIC - A NON-FICTION USED FOR NEWS, ARTICLES AND ETC.
3. ACADEMIC - CLEAR, CONCISE THAT IS BACKED UP WITH EVIDENCE
4. TECHNICAL - REQUIRES DIRECTIONS, INSTRUCTIONS & EXPLANATION
(DEVICES AND PRODUCTS)

IMAGERY - refers to mental pictures that appeal to our five senses.


1. VISUAL - sense of sight (The kitten’s fur is milky.)
2. GUSTATORY - sense of taste (The sweetness of the ice cream melts my heart.)
3. OLFACTORY - sense of smell (The aroma of the coffee traveling around my room)
4. AUDITORY - sense of hearing (The wolves howling in the night)
5. TACTILE - sense of touch (Her gentle hands makes me shiver)

DICTION - refers to the writers’ vocabulary style and expression.


1. FORMAL - uses grammatical rules and uses and proper syntax
2. INFORMAL - casual and more conversational often used in narrative literature.
3. COLLOQUIAL - used in ordinary or familiar conversation
4. SLANG - regarded as very informal

LITERATURE - A body of written works also refers to works of the creative imagination,
including poetry, drama, fiction, nonfiction, etc.
1. PROSE - is the most human conversation.
- NON FICTION AND FICTION

2. POETRY - the use of words and language to evoke a writer's feelings and thoughts.
- LYRIC - one speaker expressing thoughts and feelings.
ODE - a structured lyric poem
ELEGY - written in elegiac couplets, expressing sorrow
SONNET - consists of 14 lines and the English version is usually written in iambic
parameters.
- ITALIAN/PETRARCHAN - consists of an octave (8 lines) and a sestet (6 lines). 2 parts of
thought is arguments and conclusion. (ABBA ABBA CDECDE,
CDCDCD,CDDCDE,CDCCDC)
- SHAKESPEAREAN - consist of 3 quatrains (4 lines each) & 2 line couplet. (ABAB CDCD
EFEF GG)
- SPENSERIAN - 3 quatrain, 4 lines segment, rhyming couplet (ABAB BCBC CDCD EE)
- NARRATIVE AND DRAMATIC

STRUCTURE OF A POETRY
1. STANZAS - series of lines.
MONOSTITCH - one-line stanza
COUPLET - stanza structured 2 lines that usually rhyme
TERCET - 3 line stana (ABA line)
QUATRAIN - 4 lines stanza
SESTET - also called as sestain, 6 lines stanza
SEPTET - also called as rhyme royal, 7 lines stanza
OCTAVE - 8 lines in iambic pentameter
HETEROMETRIC - every line is a different length/free verse
2. LINE BREAK - refers to where a line of text ends/new line
3. RHYME - most common kind of rhyme is the end rhyme. Repetition of similar sounds.
4. METER - combination of patterns in the sounds.

TYPES OF RHYME SCHEME


1. ALTERNATING - 1st and 3rd line rhyme, 2nd and 4th lines rhymes
2. COUPLED - 2 line stanza that rhyme similar dual rhyming
3. SIMPLE-4 LINE - 4 line rhyme
4. LIMERICK - 5 line rhyme

ELEMENTS OF POETRY
1. CONTENT - subject of the poem. “What is the poem all about?”
2. SPEAKER - the person who’s addressing the reader. The persona of the poem.
3. THEME - meaning of the poem or the main idea that the poem is trying to convey.
4. SHAPE AND FORM - the form of poems.
5. MOOD AND TONE - the feeling that the poem creates.
6. Imagery - pictures which we perceive our minds and five sense.

FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE
1. Simile - uses a comparison to describe. A clear word like and as. (She’s as slow as a
sloth)
2. Metaphor - an imaginative way of describing something and compares 2 entities. (You
are a breath of a fresh air)
3. Hyperbole - Exaggerated statements. Not meant to be taken literally. Greek word
“excess” extreme. (I nearly dies laughing, I said that a million times)
4. Personification - Attributes human characteristics, emotions and behaviors. (The flowers
begged for water)
5. Assonance - Repetition of similar vowel sound. Uses one part to refer to the whole.
(patience always pays)
6. Cliche - Become overly familiar/common place (No pain, no gain, It is what it is)
7. Synecdoche - uses one part to refer to the whole (give us this day our daily bread = food)
8. Metonymy - object or idea referred to by the name of something closely associated with
(can you give me a hand carrying this book? hand=help) The word "boots" refers to
soldiers.
