Activity 2
Cut out a news article from a NEWSPAPER about social and cultural changes. Paste it
at the back of this page. Analyze the content of the news and provide (5) reasons why
there are such changes. Further, explain how these changes are brought about and how
it affects us Filipinos.

Cultural Change
In this article the COVID-19 pandemic has turned the world of work upside down.
Every worker, every business and every corner of the globe has been affected. The
global nature of our work and personal lives leaves us highly interdependent around the
world. When a global health crisis or pandemic occurs, wrong or miscued behaviors
that are culturally laden can lead to panic and very ill-feelings. Our natural responses
become less filtered and can easily undermine even the strongest of individual cultural
and personal identities.

Culture is like the wind. It is invisible, yet its effect can be seen and felt. When it is
blowing in your direction, it makes for smooth sailing. When it is blowing against you,
everything is more difficult.

5 reasons why there are such changes:

 The main thing is that mostly everyone will be working from home. That is
already taking place. There will be no need to “go to the office.”
 When restricted to home, workers became more adept at using project tools,
providing status updates, and working autonomously. They’ll bring these skills
with them once they’re back in the office.
 More companies, especially in technology/software development, may move to
a hybrid work model allowing employees to work remotely most the the time.
 Social rituals and behavior around meetings, ‘water cooler talks’ and informal
gatherings move (even more) to digital means due to social distancing
regulation. This is strengthening and spreading an existing trend towards
removing social interaction from the physical to the digital.
 Many professionals in fields that never used remote working tools & methods
(like video conferencing, webinars, remote education), adopt these quickly
under the pressure of necessity. This adoption might favor longer term changes
to the more frequent use of these tools & methods, next to the existing ways of
working.

Explaination:
 These changes are brought by Covid-19 pandemic. The Filipino lives have been
affected drastically. Filipinos are used to be out and about, but with this
pandemic, they are only allowed to stay home, which is driving them crazy.
Filipinos were especially unique individuals(if not all) who can never be easily
defeated by any strifes or like this pandemic. Our hearts are pure with goodness
and perseverance. In cases like this, we Filipinos has a lots of creative skills to
show and portrays not only towards oneself but for others as well. While other
countries, were panic buying, some Filipinos creatively make to protect and to
earn.

 OutThis covid-19 leads most Filipino to reflect on what matters most. Amids
this hardships, Filipinos never fail to smile. We ,(if not all) stays positive towards
life.
Social Change
The Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions (MICE) industry is considered
the fastest growing tourism sector. MICE generates foreign exchange, increases trade
and investments, provides employment, boosts local economies, and promotes
destinations. The major key to its success is the strong collaboration with the travel,
hospitality, and leisure sectors that provide products and services for the industry.
Therefore, any disruption along its value chain may lead to significant losses for its
stakeholders: organizers, participants, suppliers, sponsors, and host destinations.
Although the industry is resilient, the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) may be the
definitive crisis that will reset any previous gains from a formerly robust tourism
industry.

The IATF implementing protocols which beneficial to all people and to avoid
spreading of COVID-19. As we can see on the article that some establishments under
Resolution 99 was allowed to reopening of libraries, archives, museums, cultural
centers, and limited tourist attractions such as parks, natural sites, and historical
landmarks. Through this, our tourism industry would slowly recovered and develop.

5 reasons why there are such changes:

 Large gatherings will likely disappear for a while. People will be afraid of large
crowds because of the process we’re going through.
 Following the health protocols by the DOH or the guidelines of the IATF
( social distancing, wear face mask, face shield, and etc).
 Restoring the economy, the government will plan its strategies and we need to
abide by them.
 As we isolate we limit our contact with others. Some of us many feel lonely
others prefer to talk to fewer people in their circle.
 Social connection will have to rely on being concerned for others despite a lack
of close physical proximity.

Explanation:
 These changes are brought by the global crisis which is pandemic and COVID-
19 has changed us socially. Above all, after this lock down ends, the virus will
leave most of us traumatized for some time too. People will avoid social
gathering anyway. COVID-19 has greatly affected society because many people
are getting ill each and everyday. This has increased concern from many people
because it ruins their plans, the economy, and possibly our future too. We must
follow rules and regulations coming from our government because they are
concerns in our health. Therefore, we will work hand in hand to make our
place, not just better place but the the best place to live in. We will help to stop
COVID-19.
LESSON 2: History of Media and Globalization

G. Guide questions:
Answer the following process questions based on what you’ve read above.

1. How can the internet introduce Filipinos to globalization? Is this an active or a

passive process?
 Internet access is an important enabler for improving economic growth, as well
as social services like healthcare, education and etc. Staying connected to the
internet can help us to communicate with other people or our family. Through
the internet with technology would make you less hassle. People back then used
various physical methods to enlighten a bond but today things have turned
digital and all teenagers, even adults are cherishing their lives by showing a
different life on the walls of social media.
 There was a time back then when aunties would plan out to visit and shop in
local markets together and would discuss every problem of this world, this might
have been fishy but today online shopping have broken this urge to meet and
shop together because it’s too easy to shop online with just one click.

2. Provide 5 differentiation between traditional and new media.

 Traditional media has gatekeepers that limit access while New media (both
digital and print) is now accessible to anyone who want to put in the effort.
 New media is a form of mass communication such as using the internet on the
other hand while traditional media includes newspaper, television, radio etc.
 The benefits of new media include the fact that it's a two way communication
platform unlike traditional media. It allows its users to give their opinions
instantly unlike with mediums such as newspapers where they have to wait for
the editor to actually print their concerns and most often than not, they don't get
printed.
 Traditional Media of newspapers and television have/had staffs of people to
research and verify the truth of reporters’ claims. You could believe that they
had been diligent about trying to verify what they told you was true while in New
Media those checks are gone and we have to take the reporter’s word for it
whether a situation was as presented.
 New media allows everyone to have an opinion which can be good if used
positively to create a better influence on people. Blogging and microblogging is
imbibed by new media that allows people to explore places and things and write
about their experiences while traditional media outlet that long ago discarded
any great attachment to the truth. It was born politicized and has been willing to
tell any fabricated tale as long as it served their political ends. It’s still a viable
outlet but with diminished credibility these days from all but a core of zealots.
 The primary benefit of new media then is interactivity and active rather than
passive participation on the part of the consumer. Since many, if not most of the
traditional media (newspapers, magazines, broadcast and cable, radio, movies)
now have digital forms, the distinction between traditional media and new
media is blurring.

3. How is it different to do business without the use of the internet specifically social
networking?
 Social media strategy is not required to succeed in the business world, but you
would be making everything a lot harder on yourself if you did not embrace it,
especially with an online business. Currently, social media is the biggest vehicle
that we have on this planet that allows us to do that and it is what you need to
grow your online business.

Avoiding social media for expanding your business is like passing by your fully
functional car to walk to work in rainstorm, not good. Now, using social media
tactfully is another battle, but it is important to keep your customers’ location in
mind. You probably do not need to use every major social media platform to
reach your customers.

To recap, social media is not required, but it is most definitely the most
powerful tool for generating leads to develop and grow businesses. As long as
your target customers use social media, it would be a great disservice for you not
to embrace it.

4. Give 5 advantages of social network usage. Explain each one.

 Social Relation
Social media is an excellent platform to make relations. You can meet new
people, connect with friends and family, form group of people with same
interests.
Also can be used to improve the relationship with your colleagues, clients. This
helps in building brand loyalty and trust.
 Opportunity
Apart from other advantages, social media gives you opportunities. Many
people have talent but are struggling to show their talent to the world. For
instance, many artists have jaw dropping talent, but all they are fighting for one
chance to showcase their talent.
 Presence
Social media creates your presence which is the essential but most relevant
benefit of social media. Only big budget, high tech websites can create a
presence on the INTERNET. But not everyone can afford a web developer. In
this scenario social media work as a well-wisher for those who cannot afford or
have a minimal budget. May be now you can relate to what I was saying.

Presence on social media has its profits:

o Help people to know more about you without meeting you personally.
o Help people to contact you.
o Showcase yourself on the INTERNET.
o Can build Client’s trust when available on all social sites.
 Social Awareness
Many social media platforms help in making online events, forums, polls.
People are more enthusiast to participate and encourage these events, forums,
and polls. All these help in generating awareness, discussion and sharing an
opinion. Many social topics, issues have a very low spotlight on them. It is
important that people should be aware of it. This awareness helps many NGO’s
to collect fund.

Yes, if you use social media wisely, it will benefit our society.
 Share your expertise
Social media gives you an opportunity to talk about what you know and what
you want to be known for. Sharing your expertise will attract potential
professional and personal connections. Learn how to present your professional
experience, achievements and results and you will get more and more
opportunities to connect with like-minded people.
H. Provide factors that cause the changes found in the pictures.

Answer:
Based on the two pictures, the factors that cause changes are technology, social
media and etc. Does Harana still used in courtship nowadays? Harana is the traditional
way of courtship wherein the man sings a song for the woman he is pursuing outside the
house of the woman usually done at night. As I observed couples these days, they don’t
practice even one of any traditional panliligaw, especially the Harana. It’s too sad
because the way Filipinos practice courtship is said to be one of the most romantic in
the world. Nowadays, we are influence by technology we forgot our traditions coming
from our ancestors. We are rich in those traditions, beliefs and practices that we can
call "ours". Originally from our ancestors that passed on through generations. We
inherited those things from them that we should really treasure. This also what makes
us unique from other races. But due to the evolution of time and shifting of
generations, these traditions are slowly fading away.
J. Choose 3 social media icons you use most often and list five activities you do with
