As area of longitudianl reinforcement

Asv area of two legs of closed links at a section **
Fyv characteristic strength of the links
Fy characteristic strength of reinforcement
Hmax larger dimension of a rectangular section
Hmin smaller dimension of a rectangular section
Sv spacing of links
T torsional moment due to ultimate loads
vt torsional shear stress
2
vtu max combined shear stress (shear plus torsion) (< 5 N/mm )
vt min minimum torsional shear stress, above which reinforcement is required (< 0.4 N/mm2)
x1 smaller centre-to centre dimension of a rectangular link
y1 larger centre-to centre dimension of a rectangular link

*** In a section reinforced with multiple links , only the area of the links lying closest to the outside of the section to be used.

BS 8110 Torsional Shear Stress

CL 2.4.4.1 Vt = 2T
Hmin2 ( H max - Hmin/3)

BS 8110 Limit to shear stress

CL 2.4.5

For section where y1 < 550,

v + vt < (vtu*y1)/550

otherwise, v + vt < vtu

BS 8110 Area of torsional reinforcement

CL 2.4.7 Asv T

BS 8110 Spacing and type of links

CL 2.4.8

the value of Sv should not exceed the least of x1 , y1/2 , ## mm

the link should be closed

BS 8110 Arrangement of Longitudinal torsion reinforcement

CL 2.4.9

- reinforcement should be distributed evenly around the inside perimeter of links

- longitudinal clear distance should not exceed 300 mm
- at least 4 bars (one bar per corner if longitudinal spacing less than 300 mm)
- additional tension and compression reinforcement may be provided using larger bars than those required for bending alone
- the torsion reinforcement should extend a distance at least equal to the largest dimension of the section
beyond where it theoritically ceases to be required.
