2. Research and explain:
a. Why might a person argue that the Peace of Augsburg only set the stage for the bloody Thirty Years´ War?
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
As we know, the Peace of Ausburg was a treaty between the Schmalkaldic League and Charles V
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
signed by 155in order to end the religious struggles between the two "groups" and granted
recognition to Lutheranism and to Roman Catholicism. This seems to be a very good thing, but
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
why would someone think this agreement was one of the causes of the thirty years war? Well, by
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
doing this, the empire was divided into Lutheran and catholic states, though this treaty still
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
considered Calvinism and some other Reformed faiths as heresy and were not recognized, so it
created a lot of protestants and even if the treaty solved temporary some hostilities, there was still
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
tension between the Catholics and protestants. Insight of this It started to grow an Intolerance
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
towards the Calvinists so Emperor Ferdinand II attempted to impose Roman Catholicism on his
domains, starting the thirty years war, were the protestants rose into a rebellion.

3. Analyze perspectives.
a. Identify three historical trues and three Hollywood lies about the movie.

Reality Fiction
1. Anne Boleyn had a daughter who she named 1. Mary Boleyn never had a kid with king, just with
Elizabeth. husband, William.

2. Anne was beheaded by false charges of icest, 2. George Boleyn was killed, in company with other
4 men who also were accused of sleeping with
adultery, among others. Anne without proof but before he was killed he gave a very
long speech.
3. Whene the King Henry VIII went to the Boleyn's 3. In the movie, Mary was the younger sister but
kingdom he was still married with Catherine actually, Anne was 2 years younger than her.

b. Write a short essay: To what extent a Hollywood movie is a secondary source for history. Answer the
question by giving movie examples.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
There are a lot of Holywood movies that have the purpose of teaching history and they achieve this in a very good
way, but of course, there are some mistakes that can be somewhat far away from reality and can cause
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
misinformation on certain topics. Movies like "The Pianist", "Braveheart", "Hacksaw Ridge" and "The other Boleyn
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
girl" are some of Hollywood's movies that are based on real events and the lives of real people. For now, we will be
focusing on the movie "The other Boleyn girl" movie that can show us a lot about how Anne Boleyn made her way
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
to the throne but failed in having a long-lasting monarchy and giving the king a male heir. Sadly this movie is not as
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
accurate as we wished, there are several errors committed that show us a different version of the reality, like the fact
that the image we had of Mary, in the beginning, was of a kind and shy woman but in reality, before Mary started her
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
affair with King Henry VII, she was in a passionate relationship with King Francis I while he was already married.
Another mistaken fact about Mary Boleyn's life is that she did marry a man before Anne but he did not leave her for
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
the sake of a better work opportunity that king Thomas Boleyn had given to him in order to let Mary seduce the
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
king, but because of his death due to a sweating sickness. Another mistake they did in the movie was the plotting
that Thomas Boleyn, his wife Elizabeth, and her brother the Duke of Norfolk made to convince the girls into
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
seducing the king. There is no evidence this had occurred and in fact, Thomas was in disagreement with the
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
relationships his daughters kept with the King. Lastly in this small list of their imprecision, at the end of the movie,
they talk about how the daughter of Anne, Elizabeth became the ruler of England, but they don't mention anything
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
else about Mary, the daughter of Catherine of Aragon, she worked hard in a failed attempt to return England to
Catholicism, and as a result, nearly 300 Protestants were burned at the stake. Aside from these and other small
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
mistakes, this movie shows us the overall situation Anne was passing through and what were the reasons for Henry
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
VII to break his Catholic ties with the church, event which led to the reformation. They show us how Catherine of
Aragon fails in having a male child and how in the first wedding celebration of Mary, King Henry VII lays his eyes
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
on her and starts their love affair and later falls in love with her sister Anne Boleyn who refuses to be her mistress
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
unless he gets divorced of Catherine. Finally, she bares a girl and loses her second kid, a situation that makes her
think about having a secrete child to replace the one that had died as a fetus, with her brother who refuses to do this.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
Later on, both of them get accused by rumors about them vomiting incest and are finally decapitated. This is the
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
main information about the historical event, and are well presented in the movie the things that they missed the most
were details of their lives.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
In conclusion, Hollywood movies definitely can be a secondary source to learn about history, but just in an
abbreviated way where a lot of details can be missing or are not accurate, this type of movies should be used to have
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
a general and nonspecific knowledge about the matter. If you would like to have a long-windedly understanding of
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
the theme, movies couldn't be a very useful source for you.
