Huaraz is a Peruvian city, capital of the department of Ancash, and the second most populated

city in the department.5 Located on the banks of the Santa River, it is located in the center-north
of the country and north of Lima. Huaraz was founded by the Spanish conquistador Alonso de
Santoyo y Valverde, with the name of San Sebastián de Huaraz (in honor of Sebastián de
Milán), thus becoming the capital of the corregimiento of Huaylas6 on January 20, 1574.7
Huaraz has a temperate tropical mountain climate, sunny and dry during the day and cold at
night, with average annual temperatures between 11 - 17 ºC and absolute maximums that
exceed 21 ºC. Rainfall exceeds 500 mm per year. Rainfall exceeds 500 mm, but is less than
1000 mm during the rainy season from December to March. The dry season called "Andean
summer" lasts from April to November.
(FLORA)The territory of Huaraz has great potential for forests and land for forestry plantations
and reforestation, including extensive eucalyptus and pine forests, the result of reforestation in
the 1990s; there are also other trees, such as molle, tara, capulí, queñuales, quishuar, walnut,
alder, willow, cypress and broom; the wood from these forests is used for mining, housing
construction and carved wood crafts. 17
(FAUNA)The native fauna is composed of a multitude of animal species that inhabit the
different altitudinal levels surrounding the city. Among the mammals are the weasel, the bush,
the Andean cat, the spectacled bear, the puma, the taruca, the deer, the vicuña in the heights, the
vizcacha, the fox, the muca.18
Perishable foods are supplied by the Huaraz Central Market, which guarantees the supply of
fruits, vegetables, fish and meat, and also supplies the rest of the cities in the Callejón de
Huaylas and the eastern highlands of Ancash.
(NATURAL HERITAGE) Huascaran National Park: It is located in the Cordillera Blanca, in
the central highlands of Peru, in the high parts of the Callejón de Huaylas and the eastern
highlands of Ancash in the region of the same name.
Termas de Monterrey: 7 km / 4 miles from Huaraz, it has individual pools and wells and its
subway volcanic waters have medicinal properties.
Churup Lagoon: 28 km / 17 miles east of Huaraz, part of Huascaran National Park, the lagoon is
surrounded by forests of quenuales, quisuares and ichu. You can observe Andean fauna species.
As well as the snow-capped mountains of the Cordillera Blanca.
Willkacocha Lagoon: Due to its location, it is an exceptional viewpoint of the Cordillera Blanca
from the Cordillera Negra. From the Santa Cruz bridge, a few kilometers south of Huaraz and
crossing the town of the same name, it can be reached on foot 3 km.41
