EDUCATION UNDER THE CONDITIONS OF WAR

Key words: studying, war, students, remote, education.
Introduction. The large-scale war has been going on in Ukraine already for
7 month. Of course, our main goal is to win this war to become strong and
independent country. But even in such difficult times we shouldn’t forget about
studying and the future of our country, because this future depends on
schoolchildren and students. Their level of knowledge will determine how
developed our country will be after the end of the war and how long it will take to
restore the destroyed facilities.
Objectives. The main goal of this paper is to define the most optimal and
safe ways of studying under the conditions of war.
Methods. The most controversial issue is the choice of the form of
conducting classes in educating classes in educational institutions.
According to recommendations of the Ministry of Education and Science of
Ukraine, schoolchildren’s parents may choose how their children learn – remotely
or in classrooms. Pupils, which go to school, have to take a disturbing backpack,
which contains a bottle of pure water; energy bars and snacks; a note with the
name of a child, parents’ contacts and closest relatives; hygiene items; a set of
replacement clothes. The educational institution must prepare the rest, which is
food, water, blankets, flashlights and universal first-aid kits (Letter from the
Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, 19 August 2022).
As for students of colleges and universities, most of them are studying
remotely. Only students which educational institutions are located in the safest
parts of Ukraine in the West are studying in face-to-face format. Nevertheless,
even these students have the right to choose and they also can study remotely. The
educational institutions have to provide videoconferencing from the classrooms for
those students who don’t have possibility to attend them.
Nowadays, teachers should organize studying process, taking into account
the fact that the country is at war. So they have to be loyal to those who are in the
occupied territories or in the front-line cities, which are shelled regularly. Internet
connection may be unstable in such places. Teachers also should pay attention on
the mental state of this category of students and make adjustments for this when
grading and issuing assignments.
Results. People’s safety is the main goal for us today, so the government
together with the Ministry of Education and Science have to make decisions about
education based on the factor of safety.
Conclusion. To sum up, I’d like to say that remote studying is less effective
than face-to-face meetings in classrooms, but we don’t have alternative variants
while in our country is war. Each schoolchild and student should accumulate all
their abilities and continue to study, no matter how hard it is. We will have a happy
future after our victory.
