SCENE I
1. What does the reader find out about the current relationship between Oberon, King of the
Fairies, and Titania, Queen of the Fairies, from Puck and the first fairy?
They are fighting over an Indian boy that they both want as a servant.

2. List the ways Robin interacts with humans (lines 33-43).


The way Robin interacts with humans is by doing good work.

3. List the ways Robin admits to interacting with humans (lines 44-59)
Robin does work for a cheap price; he does not enjoy being social.

4. How have Oberon and Titania been involved in the past with Theseus and Hippolyta, and
why have they come to Athens?
They came to see the two get married. Oberon and Titania both had an affair.

5. What effect has their quarrel had on nature, on the seasons, on humans?
It caused nature to go off balance. These quarrels caused all seasons to swap places.

6. Why won’t Titania give up the changeling to Oberon? (lines 125-143)


Titania won’t give up because Oberon was one of the followers of her children and
unfortunately Oberon’s mother died at birth.

7. What does Oberon send Puck to find?


Oberon sends Puck to find a special flower that causes people to fall in love.

8. What are Oberon’s plans for Titania? Do you feel that Oberon is being spoiled or
reasonable? Cite the lines that support your argument.
Oberon’s plans for Titania is for Cupid to shoot the arrow and miss, causing him to
miss and hit the flower.

9. How does Helena react to Demetrius’s verbal abuse?


She accepts it and goes her separate ways.

She accepts the threats of physical abuse but it doesn’t phase her

She is cheating on her husband with another man.

He tells him to use the special flower on him to make him fall in love with Demetrius.

SCENE II
1. Why does Oberon want Titania to wake and fall in love with some vile thing?
Because Titania has possession of the boy. This all has to do with revenge.

2. Read the fairy lullabies and note all of the mentions of animals. What do you make of
this?
IT has to do with the poem that I personally think will show up later.

3. Oberon weaves a spell for Titania (lines 33-40). What animals does he mention?
Compare these to your answers to #2.
Oberon talks about a pard boar or car or beard.

4. Compare Lysander's first lines to those of Demetrius in Scene 1


They both have very different attitudes.

5. Why does Hermia insist Lysander sleep a little ways from her?
She is a little bit scared and she doesn’t want it to seem like they are together.

6. Why does Puck anoint Lysander’s eyes?


He wants to make sure he is doing the right thing. She does not want to mess up.

7. Paraphrase Helena's speech to line 105. What feeling does this speech convey to the
audience?
She is going to get what she wants. I have a feeling that she will do whatever it takes.

8. Why is it ironic that Lysander claims it is his reason that makes him love Helena?
It’s ironic because Lysander and Helena are very similar.

9. How does Helena react to Lysander’s sudden love for her when he awakens?
She is somewhat amazed and is not sure what to do.

10. Read Lysander's speech (ll. 142-151) closely. In addition to love, what emotion has the
magic generated? Look up the words "surfeit" and "heresy" in a dictionary. How is
Lysander applying these words to his "old love" for Hermia?
They are fighting mentally, they were talking about swords and which one is better.

11. To what does the word "your" refer in line 150?
She is acting confused and acting like “but what about that”?

12. How is Hermia’s dream a reflection of reality?


While Hermia is sleeping, he rejects his love for her. When she is dreaming, she is
actually alone. But she is actually betraying him. She doesn’t know what she wants
now, she isn’t sure if she should trust her dream or go after what she has been desperate
for.

13. The lines of the lovers, in love, angry, hurt, or confused, all rhyme in couplets. Why did
Shakespeare use this form to weave his plot of confusion? Why not use unrhymed
verse? What do you think?
He is wanting to make his poems for various people, I think he needs to write more
like this because I think he had more to say.
