MY FIRST JOB
It isn’t easy being a teenager. It’s a time of conflicts and deep feelings. You want to go out and have fun,
have a social life, have a boyfriend or a girlfriend. At home, you want your parents to treat you like an adult, yet you
still depend on them for money, food and clothes.
“It’s not easy being a teenager”, Jason thought. It was the first time he had had to take such a serious
decision. He knew he was going to hurt his parents but there was no other way. “When I told my mother I was
going to leave home she looked at me as if I had slapped her face.”
“What? Live in London?, she asked. “I just feel it’s time I saw a little more of the world around me. After all
mum, I’m eighteen. And London is not too far.” Just then my father came downstairs. “Jason wants to leave home.
He wants to leave us. He doesn’t want to live with us anymore.” She told him in a trembling voice. My father’s
expression changed.
“What? You aren’t serious, are you, son?”, he asked. He sat down looking at me with the saddest expression
I had ever seen on his face.
“I don’t want to go to university. Instead I want to get a job to earn money, to be independent! I’ve already
been offered a job in a bank in London, Dad!”
“London’s a long way away! We’ll hardly see you anymore”, my father said. “I can come back at weekends,
Dad”. He shook his head, looking more and more like someone who had just been given a few months to live.
“I don’t know, son. I don’t know.” He shook his head again and then got up and walked out into the garden.
I didn’t dare tell them I had already accepted the job offer. “Mum, I love you both but please try to understand me. I
feel I need to try to take some responsibilities for myself. I’ve always been so dependent on you. Please… I’m
sorry.”
My mother put her hand over mine. “Your father will decide the best way.” I stayed in silence for over half an
hour when I heard my father’s steps. He entered the room, put his hand over my shoulder and said, “Ok, son! If that’s
what you want… but never forget that both I and your mother will always be here to support you whenever you need
it…”
