Metaverse seems to be taking tech-world by storm and one could notice the
buzz amplifying in the past few months. Oxford Languages defines Metaverse
as “a virtual-reality space in which users can interact with a computer-
generated environment and other users”.
Companies like Meta, Microsoft, Nike, H&M etc have already taken huge strides
to conceptualise the vision of Metaverse. This vision revolves around the
creation of one unified virtual universe, connecting community, products,
commerce, workspace, entertainment, creators and much more.
With the rise of adoption of digital services, virtual assets, increased sales of
VR headsets, notable acquisitions in the world of tech and investments by tech
pioneers in the AR/VR space, the Metaverse may be closer to fruition than it
may appear.
Having said that, there are still many roadblocks and challenges that need to be
addressed before mass release. Recently, Meta opened up access to its virtual-
reality social media platform, Horizon Worlds. In Horizon Worlds, up to 20
avatars can get together at a time to explore, hang out, and build within the
virtual space. According to Meta, a beta tester reported something deeply
troubling: she had been molested by a stranger on Horizon Worlds.
