INTRODUCTORY MESSAGE

Welcome to English 8!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of

the Schools Division of Capiz and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western
Visayas through the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD).
This is developed to guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and
responsible adults) in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to
12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials

aimed to guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and
time using the contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist
the learners in acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes
for productivity and employment.

For learning facilitator:

The English 8 Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the teaching-
learning activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency
(MELC) with minimal or no face-to-face encounter between you and learner.
This will be made available to the learners with the references/links to ease the
independent learning.

For the learner:

The English 8 Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue

learning even if you are not in school. This learning material provides you with
meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active
learner, carefully read and understand the instructions then perform the
activities and answer the assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator
on the agreed schedule.

Using appropriate cohesive devices in various types of speech

Name: ________________________ Grade and Section: ________ Date: ________

I. Learning Competency

Use appropriate cohesive devices in various types of speech

II. Background Information for Learners

Cohesive devices are words or phrases that show the relationship

between paragraphs or sections of a text or speech. They signal to the reader
what the relationships are between the different clauses, sentences, and
paragraphs.

A speech or a text necessarily needs to be cohesive. It means that

each idea which is presented in sentences is well connected. The connectors
among each sentence are usually known as cohesive devices.

There are several types of cohesive devices and each category leads to
make certain connections or assumptions about the ideas you are
connecting.

Different Types of Cohesive Devices:

To signal relation in time:

Before, meanwhile, later, soon, at last, earlier, thereafter, afterward,

by that time, from then on, first, next, now, presently

To signal similarity:

Likewise, similarly, once again, once more

To signal difference:

But, yet, however, although, whereas, though, even so, nonetheless,

still, on the other hand

IV. Activities

Activity 1. Pick Me Out

Directions: Use the appropriate cohesive devices to complete the
following types of speech. Write your answer in your answer sheet.

A. Persuasive Speech

Martial Law; Crime prevention? Or selfish intention?

Freedom…it is our birthright. Many lives were wasted just to claim

this right. Three decades ago, Martial Law snatched away this right ________
was fortunately regained through giving up thousands of Filipino lives. Are
we still willing to give up this “hard-to-get” freedom?

Article 3 Sec 4 of the Philippine Constitution states, “No law shall be

passed abridging the freedom of speech, of expression, or of the press, or the
right of the people peaceably to assemble and petition the government for
redress of grievances. _____________, during martial law, this freedom is
lifted. For the moment you go beyond the scenes and uncover the shameful
events done by our government officials, you will get arrested, or worst,
killed. You are not allowed to “assemble petition against government”
because if you do so, it will be a torture, a detainment, or the end of your
life. ______________ during the time of Former Pres. Marcos, hundreds of
journalists were tortured and eventually were killed for expressing the truth
behind the bars.

_______________, the constitution also provides in article 3, section 1,

that no person shall be deprived, of his rights, liberty and property without
due process, nor any person be denied the equal protection of the laws.
_________ like the provision stated in the paragraph above, this privilege was
also lifted. During martial law, speaking out against the government is a
CRIME! We have no liberty! We need to follow what the government says
even if it is against our will even if it is against our rights. Is this scenario
showing democracy? Or DICTATORSHIP?

_____________, we are like puppets following everything the

government requires us to do. We are required to give our property whether
we like it or not. It’s always a yes or a yes, or we will get killed. They can
easily accuse us of doing something, can detain us for doing something

2
Quarter 3, Week 5

against them, steal from us, and kill us without the so called “DUE
PROCESS”! Once again I ask, is this “DEMOCRACY?!”

________________, there is no freedom of speech, no due process. I can

barely imagine the nightmare Martial Law will bring. Endless arrests of
opposition leaders or people, endless fires of guns, bullets all across the
streets, lifted trucks, holes on walls caused by bullets, coup d’ etat,
freedoms deprived, innocents accused and killed. _______________, these
pictures show the lack of democracy in our country.

______________, there it is no doubt that we will soon experience the

same thing during Marcos’ Martial Law. Speak out as a Filipino! Speak out
as a human! Fight for your rights before it is deprived from you. Never let
yourselves be the slaves of the tyrants of our own nation. For there will be
no tyrants if there will be no slaves. Fight for what is right ____________
everything is too late. What happened during Marcos’ time gradually
happens today. We are the new generation of Filipinos! We need to make
change. Let us all unite for ourselves! We need change, we need a radical
change, and that change will and will always start, in us. Long live The
Philippines!

B. Informative Speech

Why segregating waste is important

Segregating waste is basically isolating or separating waste from other

wastes. ___________, even as simple as this, we always find it hard to
workout. Discipline is the key in achieving a better life towards a great
future. Every student must learn the proper ways in handling even from the
simplest things they are seeing and doing, in short managing something is
crucial for it must be done in ways that it is ought to be. Waste,
_____________, can be seen everywhere even in our school which affects not
only the students but also the image of the school. Waste comes in all
different sizes and shapes. It can be biodegradable, non-biodegradable or
recyclable. Students take part in this problem. So why stop throwing wastes
everywhere when you can just segregate it and throw it properly in labeled
garbage cans funded and provided by our school? Be concerned enough
with what might happen in our environment if wastes are not segregated
properly.

Why are we having such problem in segregating our waste? Yes, it is

because of lack of discipline of students. We’re not aware of our actions in
throwing our wastes inappropriately. _____________, we are aware of what’s
inside the plastic of biscuits, candies, bottle etc. _________ just throw away
the way we wanted as if every corner of the school is a dumpsite. Some may

3
Quarter 3, Week 5

be aware of this matter and throw garbage properly in the waste can,
________________ is throwing wastes without segregation enough?
____________, no! _________________, if waste is not properly separated landfill
will have mixed with toxicity at the bottom with a soup leaking substance
which can contaminate water sources.

Are you not concern what might happen after throwing wastes without
undergoing segregation? As I said earlier the wastes we throw without
segregation will mixed on a landfill and will have high toxicity that will result
to contamination of water sources at the bottom of it and will drain to a
river. Remember that it is only short-term water can be thought of as
renewable source and its sustainability is still questionable. What would
happen if bodies of water specifically rivers are all toxic overtime? Will be
there enough water source for us to get hydrated or we’ll die of dehydration?
___________, this is harming our environment. _____________, we will badly
damage our nature.

If and when segregation is possible, please be responsible and

discipline yourselves enough to segregate wastes properly. Remember what
would be the big difference in segregating and without
segregating.____________, segregating wastes properly is helping to create an
environmental friendly school and a healthy environment.
